The car was brought to us by one of our very special clients who wanted the car refreshed, but has since moved to Switzerland and no longer has use for the car here in the states. Everything has been gone though with the exception of the interior seating surfaces because he wanted to keep the original integrity of the extremely well preserved 43 year old material. No other expense was spared in making this car an amazing everyday looker and driver. This stunning survivor has only 33,775 Original miles. The car is in near showroom condition and just recently underwent a body on restoration. The perfectly healthy rust and dent free body was taken down to the bare metal and professionally re-sprayed. It took one year just to complete the paint job at a cost of $10,000 -Both doors, fenders, trunk lid, engine compartment and glass were disassembled and or removed from the car in order to achieve top notch results. Needless to say the finish shines brilliantly and the end result is spectacular! -Almost every piece of rubber on the body of the car is new -All weather-stripping, door window strikers and seals were also replaced with brand new parts. -All window trim/beauty rings were sent out for re-polishing and the wheels were sand blasted and restored to factory specifications and wrapped in a brand new set of tires. -New taillights, housing and rubber seals -New oem chrome bumper -All new emblems -New wheel well fender trim -New (PMD) center caps -New handles -New mirror seals -New rocker panel moldings -Re-chromed headlight bezels -New turn signals -All new side marker lights -Complete new exhaust system (front-back) -Twin Flow-masters (sounds amazing!) -New shocks -New headliner -New carpeting -New dome light cover -New trunk liner -New correct vinyl roof -New Climate control vents Mechanically the car is in tip top condition -Overhauled matching number 350 c.i. engine runs and sounds better than new -Perfect transmission -Brakes, steering and suspension are in tip top condition. -The entire drivetrain is 100% solid and tight -All mechanical, electrical and climate control systems work like they should -Ice cold air conditioning system -Factory Delco radio There is no doubt this original California car is one special find. The new owner will be overjoyed! Original "blue and yellow" plate car verifies it's registration history in California since new. GM reintroduces Tripower name in the worst way possible
Wed, Aug 1 2018The story of General Motors' use of the Tripower moniker begins way back in 1957, when Semon E. "Bunkie" Knudsen, then General Manager of GM's Pontiac division, directed his engineers to inject more performance into his brand's line of V8-powered automobiles. Fuel injection was an option, but hot rodders flocked instead to Tri-Power (marketed way back when with a hyphen), which grafted a trio of two-barrel Rochester carburetors onto a single intake manifold. A legend was born. And that legend was born of performance. At idle and when full power wasn't required, Pontiac's Tri-Power system used just the middle carburetor, which helped make the setup easier to tune. Depending on the year and model, either a vacuum system or a mechanical linkage opened up the two outer carbs, thereby switching from two barrels to six, and allowing the engine to take in more fuel and air. And it was an easy marketing win – six barrels is better than four barrels, right? Because performance! So, when news filtered in that GM has resurrected the Tripower name, those of us who grew up attending classic car shows and wrenching on old Pontiacs did a double-take. And then we all collectively sighed. Turns out that today's Tripower refers to a trio of fuel-saving measures that include cylinder deactivation, active thermal management, and intake valve lift control, according to Automotive News. And, at least for now, it applies to GM's line of fullsize trucks powered by a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. We're all for saving fuel whenever possible. And we have zero say in how any automaker chooses to market its products and technologies. But, we'll offer our two cents anyway: Relaunching a storied name from the past is fine. Relaunching a storied name from the past while completely overlooking the reasons the name got famous in the first place is only going to irritate the people who remember the name in the first place. Couldn't they just call this new technology package something else? Junkyard Gem: 2006 Pontiac Solstice
Wed, Sep 4 2019The debut of the Pontiac Solstice, back in 2005 for the 2006 model year, stirred up much excitement in the automotive world. Sales were brisk at first, and then they weren't so great… and then Pontiac itself went under The General's cost-cutting axe. One thing I have learned during my junkyard travels is that even sought-after sports cars eventually reach a point at which they start showing up in the big self-service junkyards. For example, the BMW Z3 began appearing in such yards about five years ago, along with the Audi TT. While the Honda S2000 still appears to be exempt from this process, today's Junkyard Gem shows that the time has now come for the Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky. The first Z3s and TTs I saw in the U-Wrench-type yards were crash victims, not worth fixing, and that's the case with this Solstice. In a few more years, I'll start seeing the occasional Solstice/Sky discarded due to general worn-outness. Someone grabbed all the undented front body parts and the transmission (these items, presumably, being valuable), but no junkyard shoppers have felt like pulling the non-turbo 2.0-liter Ecotec. The interior seems dirty, probably from exposure to the elements while sitting outdoors in this Colorado Springs wrecking yard, but not in bad shape otherwise. Perhaps the car's owner celebrated a return from Iraq with the purchase of a sporty new Pontiac, 13 years ago. These cars have an enthusiastic following, so I wasn't expecting to see a junked one so soon after production ceased. I felt the same way about the Chrysler Crossfire, however, and I found two of those last year. What's next, a 2002-2005 Thunderbird? This content is hosted by a third party. The last Pontiac Fiero sold for $90,000 at auction
Thu, Dec 3 2020On August 16, 1988 the last Pontiac Fiero, a red GT model, rolled off the assembly line at GM's Pontiac Assembly plant located in Pontiac, Michigan. It wasn't just the final Fiero, but the final car to be built at that site. The car was raffled off to one of 1,400 plant employees that would soon have to find jobs elsewhere. Whoever that employee was, they remained faithful to the Fiero and kept it in mint condition for 32 years. Last month, it was finally time to move on. It crossed the block at GAA Auctions in Greensboro, North Carolina where it sold for an astounding $90,000. According to the auction house, that's a new world record. The price no doubt reflected the car's place in history as the last example of GM's 1980s mid-engined sports car. However, it was also showroom-new, with just 582 miles clocked on its 2.8-liter V6. 1988 models were also fitted with an upgraded, Lotus-esque suspension produced for just that one year. In addition, this car, serial number 226402, came with its original build sheet, photos from the assembly line, and a collection of news articles and books. It still wore its pre-delivery plastic on the interior and was fully loaded with automatic transmission. This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings. The car's custodian for the past 32 years must be pleased. Bidding started at $25,000 but soon rocketed past the $65,000 reserve. You can see the action starting at the 2:50:13 mark in the video above. The Fiero was symbolic of the 1980s and stood out from the standard GM passenger car fare for its mid-engine layout and plastic body panels. In an era when GM often rebadged cars with minimal differences, the Fiero rode on its own unique chassis. It was positioned as one of the defining products for Pontiac, GM's "excitement" brand, but actual performance never quite lived up to its striking looks. Nevertheless, it garnered a cult following. It's often the basis for (questionable) custom builds mimicking more exotic models like Ferraris and Lamborghinis, thanks to a steel space-frame design that allows body panels to be easily removed. Thankfully, this significant example escaped such a fate and will live on as a reminder of an interesting chapter of automotive history.
