This is my wife's car, her baby really, a 1986 Pontiac Firebird. What does it need? Nothing but a new owner. Registered, insured and will pass any state inspection or emissions test. It has just over 93,000 original miles. It has been well taken care of. My wife is sad to see it go but the time has come. All it has really been used for the last couple years is to go to Friday night or Saturday local car shows.

Exterior: The red paint was done just over 3 years ago and it shows well. It is not perfect. Has a few very minor touch ups but no dents or scratches and absolutely no rust anywhere top or bottom. It was a factory undercoated car I believe. In the pictures it is pretty dusty and right out of storage, it shines up very well. Tail lights are great and all lights work as they should. Tires have good tread left and the rims are the factory 15".

Interior: The interior is in nice shape as well. No cracks in the dash. Power windows, power hatch, rear sun protector that has always been used so the back pieces are mint and not chalky or old looking. I am sure you could find a few minor items to attend to if you want perfection but the interior is far above average. Everything works except the original radio goes screwy every now and then. All electrical is stock and has never been messed with.

Drivetrain: Original 305 engine has had an Edelbrock performer intake added long ago but every piece of original emissions equipment is intact and functioning. Engine runs great. Pump the gas once and it fires right up with zero issues. Original 700R4 4 speed over drive transmission shifts flawlessly with no issues and no slipping or noises. The rear is the original gearing of 2.73. It gets 22 mpg on the highway. You could fly in from anywhere and drive it home. There are no issues that would stop you.

Please read my feedback to see I am describing this car fairly. I am not out to screw over anyone, I just need to sell this car as my wife is ready to move on. She has always loved the low mileage but now that it is approaching 100,000 soon, she is ready to part with it and move on. We are sad to see it go but we can't really justify owning it because it is just sitting more and more. Over all, this is a very nice car in much better than "average" shape. Not flawless but very presentable. It does not need any repairs to drive away and has no known issues. Feel free to send me a message with any questions you may have or I can provide a phone number if you want to talk. I can also show the car in person, no problem at all.

Buyer is responsible for all shipping costs or I can meet you at the airport with the car if you want to fly in and drive it home. I am a motivated seller (wife says get it gone before she changes her mind) and you will meet her when you pick it up! She will insist on watching it go! If you want to make an offer please be ready to own the car as I will accept a reasonable offer that is quite a bit lower than the asking price. So please be serious, if you make a decent offer it will be accepted. If you are looking for a car like this do not let this one get away. It is solid and ready to go. Thanks and as always, check my feedback to bid with confidence!

Junkyard Gem: 1987 Pontiac Firebird

Sat, May 9 2020

From 1967 through 2002, the Pontiac Division offered the Firebird, close sibling to the Chevrolet Camaro. By the third generation, which debuted for the 1982 model year, it became more difficult to tell the two F-body cars apart at a glance and the Pontiac-exclusive engines of the earlier years disappeared, but the Firebird still retained its own personality and its own position in the GM marketing hierarchy. I still find the occasional 1982-1992 Camaro as I search car graveyards for interesting stuff, but the corresponding Firebirds have become scarce in recent years. Here's a base-engine-equipped '87, its Bright Red paint (yes, that was the official name for the color) faded by the Colorado sun as it awaits the crusher. Firebird shoppers had their choice of three engines in 1987: A 5.7-liter Chevy V8 (210 hp), a 5.0-liter Chevy V8 (205 hp) and the same 2.8-liter 60° V6 that went into the Fiero and countless front-drive GM sedans (135 hp). This car has the base engine. The third-gen F-body didn't weigh much (3,105 pounds for the '87 with six-banger, about what a 2020 Corolla weighs), so 135 horses was tolerable. Plenty of these cars got T-5 5-speed manual transmissions, but this one got the two-pedal setup. Camaro wheels, of course. Our Friend the Carburetor didn't disappear from new cars until the early 1990s in the United States, though electronic fuel injection had become very commonplace by 1987. Still, GM considered this car's EFI worth a door-handle brag. It's not worth fixing up a mashed six-cylinder third-gen Firebird, so we can see the route this car took to its final parking space. GM expands headlight recall to 180k Buicks and Pontiacs

Thu, Aug 20 2015

General Motors is issuing an expanded headlight module recall to include 180,504 examples in North America of the 2005 Buick LaCrosse (2008 model year pictured above) and 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix. Specifically, the campaign affects 159,584 of them in the US and 20,920 in Canada. When the part fails, the vehicles' low beams can stop working either intermittently or permanently. "GM is unable to confirm any crashes, injuries or fatalities related to this condition," the company said in a statement, and there's currently no permanent repair for the problem. For now, dealers will replace the headlamp module with a new example of the same part. The automaker first announced this campaign in November 2014 when it affected 316,357 examples globally of the 2006-09 Buick LaCrosse; 2006-2007 Chevy TrailBlazer and TrailBlazer EXT; 2006-2007 GMC Envoy and 2006 GMC Envoy XL; 2006-2007 Buick Rainier; 2006-2008 Saab 9-7X; and 2006-08 Isuzu Ascender. This classic Firebird restomod swallowed a Prius

Tue, Apr 19 2016

It takes an unusual eye to look at a 1967 Pontiac Firebird and see the Toyota Prius hidden inside. But that's just the kind of eye that a creative mechanic known online as "Bill the Engineer" has. Bill is updating his old Firebird into a true classic for the 21st century and has documenting the changes over at Priuschat and EcoModder. The TL,DR version of the story: he's replacing the worn-out powertrain with the gas-electric hybrid one from a Prius V, because it turns out the two vehicles have almost exactly the same wheelbase. Bill, who's from Columbus, Ohio and doesn't want his full name used, said in his posts on the conversion project that he's made many memories with this vehicle since buying it back in 1979. Since then, a few moves, a few decades, and some time in storage meant that the car would no longer function as he wanted it to. As he wrote, "when it comes to mice in the vehicles IT IS WAR." His solution is to make new memories and making a greener vehicle, and so we wanted to ask him how things have been going. Bill's been traveling a bit recently, but told AutoblogGreen that he's now figuring out the next steps for this amazing and complicated project. "I always plan things out before I do them," he said. That's the only way something like this can work. ABG: I think we have to start with what gave you the inspiration for this project. Was it simply that you had the two cars and wanted to see them merged into one cool mashup, or was it something else? "One day my wife wondered out loud if the car could be converted into a hybrid... The rest is history." Bill: I have been the owner of my 1967 Firebird convertible since 1979 when I bought it for $750.00. I drove it for years and made many memories. Afterward it was in storage for many years during which time mice at their way into the car and trashed the interior and wiring. I started working on a conventional restoration but always ran into major problems with hidden corrosion, electrical issues and an engine on its last legs. The car was never going to be as nice as I wanted going the conventional route. One day my wife wondered out loud if the car could be converted into a hybrid like our two daily driver Prii. That got me thinking about how it could be done. The rest is history... ABG: It looks like you started in late 2014. Have things gone well since then, or has it been one hassle after another? What has been the biggest setback, and what were the biggest victories?
