Up for bid is a 1973 Pontiac Firebird with Trans Am rear wing that has been transformed into a Formula 400 Firebird. It houses a Pontiac 400 with 7K3 heads and automatic transmission. It has the Formula hood and the Rally II wheels on BF Goodrich tires which were purchased just before I purchased it. Tires have not been abused and are still like new. The car started life in California as a 6 cylinder car and was a lighter shade of blue on the exterior. The car was showing its age virtually rust free when someone rear ended the car lightly but it was enough the insurance company totaled it. The car was bought back and was then sold to the owner in Ohio which spent about $15000 into redoing the car. There was a small surface rust spot on rear quarter lip about the size of an egg which was sanded and removed. The trunk floor was flattened out but not perfect. The formula hood was purchased. The car was sanded down and repainted in dark blue. He installed a Pontiac 400 after painting it Rustoleum red so the paint wouldn’t chip. The motor has 7K3 heads. The paint is about a 8 out of 10. There is a spot by door handle that was burned through the clear coat while buffing. The hood has some paint bubbles from paint separation due to the prep work on the fiberglas hood. There are some minor cracks in paint on the endure nose. Overall though the cars paint is nice and is driver quality but better than a lot of paint jobs I’ve seen already. There was an aftermarket stereo in it when I looked at it which disappeared from the car before picking it up and I never replaced it so the cut radio hole remains but dash is nice otherwise. The driver’s seat has a split seam on seat area and a small rip on top of back seat. There are blue neon lights under the front and side rockers of car. Although it is cool in some eyes, it is easily removable if it isn’t to your taste. Battery, fuel pump , fan, door sill plates, KYB shocks on rear and rear package tray were replaced since I bought it. I’ve had it since June 2010. I drove the car from Ohio to Pa. when I bought it. It has been driven to several long distance shows since. It is a fun car that gets attention when it goes to shows. Buyer is expected to pay all tax, tags and transfer fees. Buyer is expected to pick up the car within 10 days of auction end unless other arrangements are made with me the seller. This car is being sold as is with no warranty of any kind. I have listed this cars condition as true and correct as possible. If you are local and would like to view the car prior to bidding just ask and we will work out a time. I reserve the right to end the auction early as car has been listed locally. |

Junkyard Gem: 2000 Pontiac Sunfire coupe
Thu, Feb 21 2019In a few months, we'll reach the tenth anniversary of GM's axing of the venerable Pontiac brand. G6s, Vibes, and Matizes continued to be built until 2010, but I'm noticing a marked decrease in discarded Pontiacs lately, as I perform my junkyardy rituals. Here's a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire, photographed in a Colorado wrecking yard. The Sunfire was the near-identical sibling to the Chevrolet Cavalier, based on the long-running (1982-2005) J-Body platform. It was cheap and simple, looked pretty sporty (at least in coupe form), and every parts store in North America carried just about everything you'd need to keep one running. This coupe had to compete for sales not only with a vast and menacing array of imports but with GM's own Saturn SC2 (not to mention the Cavalier itself). Meanwhile, the J platform was showing its age more with each passing year. This car sports what must have been the complete line of Fatal Clothing bomber-nose-art/skate-punk/gang-tag-influenced decals, circa 2010. I actually photographed this car back in 2011, then misplaced the image files until last week. The stickers are very California-centric for a Colorado car, but then plenty of Californians — including me— move here. When you know you're a car's final owner, it's a lot easier to whip out the paint pens and redecorate the interior. Power came from the engine GM developed for the very first J-Bodies: the 2.2-liter 122 pushrod four-cylinder. 2002 was the last model year for 122-powered Sunfires and Cavaliers; the most affordable S-10/Sonoma/Hombre trucks got this engine through 2003. It even came with a remote, so bad Midwestern farmgirls could make quick getaways when caught in the act by enraged broom-wielding mothers. Pontiac should come back as a performance division for GM
Thu, Apr 6 2017For decades the Pontiac brand was known as GM's performance brand. From the 1964 Pontiac GTO, to the 1967 Firebird, to the 1984 Fiero, to the 2006 Solstice Turbo, and 2009 G8 GXP, Pontiac had a reputation for building exciting cars, with bold styling and performance to back it up. When the Camaro was killed off in 2002, the Pontiac Firebird died off with it, and the last Pontiacs were built in early 2010. But with names like G3, G4, and G6, Pontiac's performance image had long faded from it's earlier glory days. My idea for Pontiac's revival would be to bring it back as a dedicated performance marque similar to Chevy's Super Sport (SS) line up of years past. First, and most obvious would be to bring back the Pontiac Firebird. Offering the entry-level model with the Camaro's 275HP turbo 4 cylinder engine, then having the Camaro SS's 455HP V8, but also offering a halo model Trans Am that is a revamped Camaro ZL-1 along with it's tire-shredding 650HP, supercharged V8 and race tuned suspension. Secondly, I would bring back the GTO. Which I would base on the current Chevy SS, but I would use the full 455-horsepower LS4 V8 (rather than the 415-hp setup that it has now). Furthermore, I would add the impressive 650-hp supercharged V8 to provide real competition to the Charger Hellcat. Importantly, I would make sure that the new GTO had bold, distinctive styling that really set it apart. I understand that purists would want any Pontiac GTO to be a two-door coupe, but I think that they could forgive that if the new GTO was an outstanding American performance car. Next, I would take the Buick Cascada convertible, add much bolder styling, swap in the Camaro's 275-hp turbo engine, and tune up the suspension to provide more performance than luxury (without being harsh). And finally I would round out the line up by using the new 2018 Traverse , but use the new, bold Pontiac design language to spice up the model's looks, tweak the engines for more power, and again provide a performance suspension that matches the model's new sporty looks. Obviously, having a high performance Pontiac model line up would steal away some sales from Chevy, Buick, and Cadillac models. But I think that it would more than make up for this by also stealing away sales from competing brands.
