Up for sale is a 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT.  I am selling this for a friend, but address all questions to me.  This car has 67000 miles on it, but only 20000 on the engine, as the engine was rebuilt in the late 90s by the man who owns it.  The car runs fine, however at idle the rpms cut out and come back (the car wont die) I think it is a vacuum issue.  At load driving it, there are no problems.  The clutch master cylinder is bad, I have replaced the slave.  If you try to bleed the system, you can get clutch to release once or twice before too much air gets in.  The clutch pedal has been repaired as they have a tendency to bend over time. I removed it, straightened it, and also fully welded the u bracket to the arm and added some gussets so it will not bend again.  The door windows work but are very slow, and the ele door locks I removed as the linkage was binding the system up and making it hard to unlock. It is now easy.  It has a new pick up coil, plugs, and wires installed in it.  I also replaced the fuel pump.  The car is solid underneath, as it has been in Kentucky since 1990 that I can confirm.  I have known the car since 2003, and has never let the owner down until it sat for a while after the clutch master went out. The car has sat for about 8 months now.  The interior is pretty good, the seats are very good, no rips.  Dash is pretty good, has all gauges functioning.  The headliner is coming down as you can see in the pics.  The car needs about a good weekend of work and cleaning to be a real nice ride. The owner doesnt have the money and so I dont have the time to fix her. It is a fun car to drive though.  Headlights work fine up and down. One rear wheel on the car now is wrong (its a front wheel) but I have the correct rear for it.  I also have and extra front passenger fender to replace the cracked one, I also have another front bumper, drivers door, and air duct behind the driver.  The window rubber scrapers are bad, but the door seals seem to be fine although there are one or two cracks in them, no water gets in the car.  Brakes are good. If I have left anything out, I apologize, please feel free to ask any questions, I am pretty good with cars so I can check anything for you. If you live in the area you are more than welcome to come inspect the car.  It can be driven, but you have to power shift.  Thanks for looking, good luck.

I do not mind to have the car shipped, but the shipping the the buyers responsibility, you set it up, and I will help load it and pack the car with the extra parts there will be extra parts, final payment in cash, or US Post office check only.

Junkyard Gem: 1987 Pontiac Firebird

Sat, May 9 2020

From 1967 through 2002, the Pontiac Division offered the Firebird, close sibling to the Chevrolet Camaro. By the third generation, which debuted for the 1982 model year, it became more difficult to tell the two F-body cars apart at a glance and the Pontiac-exclusive engines of the earlier years disappeared, but the Firebird still retained its own personality and its own position in the GM marketing hierarchy. I still find the occasional 1982-1992 Camaro as I search car graveyards for interesting stuff, but the corresponding Firebirds have become scarce in recent years. Here's a base-engine-equipped '87, its Bright Red paint (yes, that was the official name for the color) faded by the Colorado sun as it awaits the crusher. Firebird shoppers had their choice of three engines in 1987: A 5.7-liter Chevy V8 (210 hp), a 5.0-liter Chevy V8 (205 hp) and the same 2.8-liter 60° V6 that went into the Fiero and countless front-drive GM sedans (135 hp). This car has the base engine. The third-gen F-body didn't weigh much (3,105 pounds for the '87 with six-banger, about what a 2020 Corolla weighs), so 135 horses was tolerable. Plenty of these cars got T-5 5-speed manual transmissions, but this one got the two-pedal setup. Camaro wheels, of course. Our Friend the Carburetor didn't disappear from new cars until the early 1990s in the United States, though electronic fuel injection had become very commonplace by 1987. Still, GM considered this car's EFI worth a door-handle brag. It's not worth fixing up a mashed six-cylinder third-gen Firebird, so we can see the route this car took to its final parking space. Automakers tussle over owners of 'orphan' makes

Thu, 10 May 2012

When General Motors put down several of its brands in recent years, it also let loose thousands of brand-loyal customers who will eventually need another car.
R.L. Polk Associates estimates there are more than 18 million cars from 16 discontinued makes on the road today. Those "orphan owners" have sales-hungry competitors seeing dollar signs. GM is offering Saturn owners $1,000 cash toward a Chevy Cruze, Cadillac CTS or a GMC Acadia. Ford is giving its Mercury lease customers a chance to get out of their contracts with no early-termination penalty and offering to waive six remaining payments if they drive off in a Ford or Lincoln.
Edmunds.com research shows the efforts are paying off somewhat for GM, with 39 percent of Pontiac owners, 37 percent of Hummer owners and 31 percent of Saturn owners taking delivery of another GM-branded vehicle. But that leaves as much as 69 percent of owners going elsewhere. Ford, Honda and Toyota seem to be attracting many former GM owners.

GM knew about fatal Chevy ignition problem decade before recall

Fri, 21 Feb 2014

Well, this is not good for General Motors. Following a report last week that GM was recalling 778,000 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 compacts over concerns that the ignition could switch out of the "run" position without warning, USA Today reports that the Detroit-based behemoth knew about the issue, which affected 2005 to 2007 Cobalts (the Cobalt shown above and in the gallery is from 2010) and 2007 Pontiac G5s, all the way back in 2004.
The information comes from a deposition in a civil lawsuit against GM, obtained by USA Today, which claims that a GM engineer experienced the issue while the then-new model was undergoing testing. The issue was "solved" when a technical service bulletin was issued in 2005, informing dealers to install a snap-on key cover on the cars of customers who complained about the issue. According to the Cobalt's program engineering manager, Gary Altman, the cover was an "improvement, it was not a fix to the issue."
The case where the depositions were made was from 2010, and involved Brooke Melton, a 29-year-old pediatric nurse in Georgia who was killed on her birthday. At the time, police claimed she was going too fast on a wet, rural road, although it later came out through the black box that her car's ignition had come out of the "run" position at least three seconds before the accident (the max amount of time a black box records before a wreck), disabling her airbags, power steering and anti-lock brakes. According to USA Today, police said Melton was "traveling too fast for the roadway conditions," although it's impossible to know if she'd have been in the wreck, which injured the occupants of another vehicle, had her 2005 Chevy not shut off. GM settled the Melton family's case, although the details remain confidential.
