Up for auction is a 1972 Pontiac Lemans Endura GTO body code 72 23567 - 1972 (72) Pontiac (2) Lemans/GTO (35) 2-Door Convertible (67). This is a custom-built convertible with all the nicest options Pontiac had to offer in 1972 plus some modern ones as well. The motor is a 1972 Pontiac 455 cubic inch H/O RAM AIR motor with functioning RAM AIR. The car is outfitted with the optional side splitter exhaust (extremely rare for 1972), rear spoiler (actually a 1971 spoiler as the original 1972 “ducktail” spoiler just didn’t look tough enough, Rally II wheels, white interior, white convertible top, numerous NOS and/or original EVERYTHING (with the exception of the 10 – BOLT 3:55 posi-traction gears I had installed and Edelbrock carburetor). It has an NOS hood, numerous other interior and exterior NOS items, some only one of a kind in existence. The car took over three years to build and complete. Although it is a stunning example of a gorgeous restoration, it does need a handful of minor open items to be completed:

  1. It needs a new turbo 350 transmission dipstick tube (the current one causes a fluid leak).
  2. It needs a convertible top motor repair.
  3. Trunk spatter paint respray
  4. Trunk lid edge paint bubble repair and paint (typical 1972 trunk)
  5. Small paint chip in front passenger fender (all paint blemish issues EASILY repaired)

I finished 99% of the car and decided to store it for when I had the time to complete it. Since my life is so busy, I have decided to put the car up for sale and make the new owner aware of the items required for completion and price the car accordingly. The car has been in heated, climate-controlled storage since 2003 and has not been started in a number of years.

THE BODY:

The paint is spectacular Sikkens Lucerne Blue base coat, clear coat. This was a frame-on restoration with nearly every part replaced with original, NOS or restored items. I kept true to the original Pontiac colors with the exterior color scheme, interior and top. 1971 rear deck spoiler, front spoiler, NOS lights, exhaust splitters, re-chromed rear bumper, NOS door handles, restored and NOS stainless pieces, factory hood tachometer, all new or NOS glass except for the rear quarter glass panels.

THE ENGINE & DRIVETRAIN

Completely rebuilt 1972 Pontiac 455 cubic inch H/O motor YB Code with 7F6 455 H/O heads date code 1241. Functioning RAM AIR, power steering, power brakes, NOS air conditioning system, Edelbrock carburetor (original carb comes with the car), dual tachometers. Completely restored Rally II wheels with Firestone Firehawk 60 series tires (less than 100 miles). Stainless steel dual exhaust with NOS side splitters. New suspension parts throughout.

THE INTERIOR

Completely reupholstered front and rear seats, new convertible top (trim code 272), carpet. New dashboard, formula steering wheel, floor shift with console, in-dash tachometer, original dash radio plus glove box CD player.

This is for all intent and purpose, a 1972 GTO Convertible “Fantasy Car” which I built to drive and enjoy for many years. Well, my life is not so where I can do that. The car literally has less than 100 miles on it since built. I did not want to take it out on the road until it was completely done. Well, it is nearly done with the exception of the items mentioned above. Call me crazy, but I wanted the car to be 100% done not 99% done before I went cruising. This is a dream 1972 GTO. If you could go back in time and custom-design the perfect 1972 GTO convertible (if they truly were produced besides the 1 that does exist), this would be it. Fast forward to the 21st century with modern tires, high performance paint, transmission, gears, etc. and this is what you would end up with. With nearly $130,000 invested, I am looking for a fraction of what I have into it. If you have restored a car before, you know that you can’t put a price on (or be reimbursed for) the number of hours you spend hunting and dealing with all the parts guys out there, exchanging part after part until you get the right one for YOUR car, this car is actually a bargain. I apologize for the pictures since the car could not be easily moved to take better pictures.

Junkyard Gem: 2001 Pontiac Aztek

Tue, Jul 11 2017

Ah, the Pontiac Aztek. Everyone laughs at the Aztek ... except, apparently, for Coloradans who like to go camping, bike riding, hiking, and all that outdoorsy stuff that folks do in the Centennial State. You'll see Azteks being driven, unironically and without shame, all over the place in the Denver region, and now plenty of them are showing up in the local wrecking yards. Here's a first-year-of-production example in its final campground. These minivans or crossovers (or however the experts finally decided to categorize them) had built-in air compressors, audio controls in the rear cargo area, and other features meant to enhance tailgating, camping, and other activities deemed central to Generation X's allegedly active lifestyle. You could even get an optional camping kit with a tent that attached to the rear of the Aztek. So, it was a General Motors minivan-like vehicle, cousin of the weird-looking Dustbusters of the 1990s, with lots of useful features for those who did more than just commute to work and drop off kids at school. Unfortunately for GM, the Aztek was staggeringly ugly, and Generation Xers were too damned broke to buy new cars in 2001, anyway. I see plenty of them in Denver-area wrecking yards now, along with their slightly-less-offensive-looking Buick Rendezvous siblings, and so I decided to document one before they're all gone. GM recalling 426,000 sedans over faulty transmission shift cable

Fri, 21 Sep 2012

General Motors is recalling some 426,240 sedans that may have a faulty transmission shift cable, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report this morning. The recall concerns a fault within four-speed automatic transmissions equipped on 2007-2010 Saturn Aura models, and 2008-2010 Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6 models.
The report specifies that tabs on the transmission shift cable may fracture and separate. Such a fault could cause a discrepancy between the actual position of the transmission and the apparent position of the shift lever.
GM is currently working to notify owners of the vehicles in question, and dealers will check and replace shift cables free of charge. Scroll down to read the complete NHTSA report.

Pontiac should come back as a performance division for GM

Thu, Apr 6 2017

For decades the Pontiac brand was known as GM's performance brand. From the 1964 Pontiac GTO, to the 1967 Firebird, to the 1984 Fiero, to the 2006 Solstice Turbo, and 2009 G8 GXP, Pontiac had a reputation for building exciting cars, with bold styling and performance to back it up. When the Camaro was killed off in 2002, the Pontiac Firebird died off with it, and the last Pontiacs were built in early 2010. But with names like G3, G4, and G6, Pontiac's performance image had long faded from it's earlier glory days. My idea for Pontiac's revival would be to bring it back as a dedicated performance marque similar to Chevy's Super Sport (SS) line up of years past. First, and most obvious would be to bring back the Pontiac Firebird. Offering the entry-level model with the Camaro's 275HP turbo 4 cylinder engine, then having the Camaro SS's 455HP V8, but also offering a halo model Trans Am that is a revamped Camaro ZL-1 along with it's tire-shredding 650HP, supercharged V8 and race tuned suspension. Secondly, I would bring back the GTO. Which I would base on the current Chevy SS, but I would use the full 455-horsepower LS4 V8 (rather than the 415-hp setup that it has now). Furthermore, I would add the impressive 650-hp supercharged V8 to provide real competition to the Charger Hellcat. Importantly, I would make sure that the new GTO had bold, distinctive styling that really set it apart. I understand that purists would want any Pontiac GTO to be a two-door coupe, but I think that they could forgive that if the new GTO was an outstanding American performance car. Next, I would take the Buick Cascada convertible, add much bolder styling, swap in the Camaro's 275-hp turbo engine, and tune up the suspension to provide more performance than luxury (without being harsh). And finally I would round out the line up by using the new 2018 Traverse , but use the new, bold Pontiac design language to spice up the model's looks, tweak the engines for more power, and again provide a performance suspension that matches the model's new sporty looks. Obviously, having a high performance Pontiac model line up would steal away some sales from Chevy, Buick, and Cadillac models. But I think that it would more than make up for this by also stealing away sales from competing brands.
