Drive plays Smokey, Bandit with turbo Trans Am

Sun, Jun 28 2015

The modern trend for powertrains can be summed up with the simple maxim: cut displacement and add forced induction. Whether you are looking at the just-introduced 2016 Chevrolet Cruze or a BMW M3, this adage holds true. However, Pontiac's attempt at the idea goes all the way back in 1980 with the Firebird Trans Am and its turbocharged 4.9-liter V8. Drive's Mike Musto takes out a 1981 example to explain what makes this largely forgotten muscle car so special, and it certainly isn't performance. While a 4.9-liter V8 might sound like a lot in the modern world, keep in mind that only few years before the second-generation Trans Am was available with up to a staggering 7.5-liters of displacement. Turbocharging of road cars in the early '80s was quite archaic by today's standards, and the Firebird only managed around 200 horsepower with this mill. Without much go, the turbo Trans Am made up for a lack of power with lots of show. As Musto points out, the famous flaming chicken adorns practically every surface you can see on the coupe, and boost lights on the hood illuminate when the turbo is spinning. Musto still finds a lot to like about the turbo Trans Am. He even calls it "Burt Reynolds as an automobile." Find out why the coupe is so special in this entertaining clip.

GM recalling 8.4M cars, 8.2M related to ignition problems

Mon, 30 Jun 2014

General Motors today announced a truly massive recall covering some 8.4 million vehicles in North America. Most significantly, 8.2 million examples of the affected vehicles are being called back due to "unintended ignition key rotation," though GM spokesperson Alan Adler tells Autoblog that this issue is not like the infamous Chevy Cobalt ignition switch fiasco.
For the sake of perspective, translated to US population, this total recall figure would equal a car for each resident of New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Montana, Delaware, South Dakota, Alaska, North Dakota, the District of Columbia, Vermont and Wyoming. Combined. Here's how it all breaks down:
7,610,862 vehicles in North America being recalled for unintended ignition key rotation. 6,805,679 are in the United States.

Junkyard Gem: 2007 Saturn Sky

Sat, Jun 26 2021

The Pontiac Division didn't have long to live when the Solstice first appeared in 2005 as a 2006 model, and Saturn's head was inching toward the chopping block at about the same rate. Still, optimism reigned — at least, it did until the global economy fell apart — and so Saturn Dealers got a rebadged version of the Solstice to sell: the Sky. Available for just the 2007 through 2010 model years, slightly more than 34,000 Skies rolled out of showrooms before the doors were nailed shut. Here's one of those rare cars, found in a Denver-area self-service yard a few weeks ago. I've found a handful of discarded Solstices in car graveyards during the past few years, mostly with crash damage. This Sky endured a medium-hard impact in the right front corner, which sent it to this place. The 177-horsepower, 2.4-liter Ecotec still resides under the battered hood. The Sky Redline version had a turbocharged engine rated at 260 horses; we can assume that such an engine would be yanked and purchased by the first junkyard shopper that realized what it was. The base transmission in the Sky was an Aisin five-speed manual, but this car has the optional five-speed automatic.  The Sky had its own nose and some different badging, but otherwise didn't differ much from the Solstice.  For the South Korean market, the Sky got Daewoo G2X badges and was advertised as the ideal vehicle for high-speed chases through Seoul traffic. The same car went to Europe as the Opel GT. Sadly, GM ran out of money to make right-hand-drive Skies, so we never got to witness Holden or Vauxhall versions. Here's Bob Lutz describing the new Sky. Lutz really hated car names molded into plastic bumper covers, so he takes great care here to describe the genuine glued-on emblems. Related Video:

DESCRIPTION
We are delighted to offer this 1965 Pontiac GTO convertible finished in factory correct Montero Red with Black interior and matching black convertible top! It’s heavily optioned with features that start with a 389ci Tri-Power Ram Air V8 engine mated with a Muncie M20 4-speed transmission and 3.23 Safe-T-Track rear axle ratio! Options include power steering, power brakes, center console, Rally gauges with dash tachometer, 14” Rally I wheels wrapped in Mickey Thompson Indy Profile redline tires measuring G60-14, deluxe seatbelts, remote drivers mirror, door edge guards, interior courtesy lights, glove box lamp, passenger vanity mirror, rear back-up lights, windshield washer with dual speed wipers, tilt steering column with faux wood steering wheel, and push-button radio!

The body and chassis on this wonderfully restored example are exceptional! It did start life with a 389ci 4-barrel engine and automatic transmission, but was later fitted with a 1966 WS-coded 389ci V8 offering 360 horsepower with functional Ram Air intake and 4-speed transmission during the restoration! The engine was professionally built and balanced by Nova Automotive located in Nova Scotia, Canada with a .030 bore to the cylinder walls, .010 on the mains, and .030 on the rods. Completed October 2003. It is nicely dressed with a chrome air cleaner and valve covers, GM hoses & tower clamps, inspection markings, optional Hooker headers with all new exhaust, correct Rochester carbs with identification tags, Delco-Remy components including faux battery cover, and more! The rear trunk compartment is just as detailed with floor mat, spar tire, jack and tire changing tools.

It is represented beautifully in all respects as an honest original GTO, and drives down the road exactly the same! It will come with original PHS documentation realizing this car is now impressively upgraded with non-original, but highly desired equipment. Please call with any additional questions or requests for extra information. We appreciate your interest and thank you in advance for your business!
