1964 Pontiac Gto (clone) Convertible 389 Tri-power 4 Speed on 2040-cars
Torrance, California, United States

Just in time for Christmas - the perfect sleigh for Santa!
You are looking at my pride and joy, a 1964 Pontiac GTO clone with a power top, 4-Speed manual transmission and a Tri-Power. Everything you need without the worry that goes with a numbers matching GTO. I've driven this car to work and left it in the parking lot with no worries - something I would not do with an all original GTO! The previous owner told me that this amazing car started life as a California 6 cylinder LeMans and at some point a donor GTO was used to supply this car with a GTO drivetrain and body parts. The car is made up of original OEM GTO parts, and few reproductions. The person I bought it from told me when the restoration was done (in the 1980s I believe) aftermarket reproductions were not available so he went with OEM. The hood is an original metal hood from a 1964 GTO that alone sells for THOUSANDS of dollars alone. Highlights Include: - 389 V8 Engine - Tri-Power Carbs (Rebuilt in October by California Carburetor) - Muncie 4 Speed Manual Transmission - Power Convertible Top - Power Steering - Power Brakes with Upgraded Aftermarket Front Discs - Fresh Front End Rebuild with Powder Coated A-Arms and Parts - Custom Made Wide 15" Steel Wheels from Stockton Wheel - New Tires with Under 300 miles - New Gas Tank - New AM/FM/USB Radio - New Convertible Top Hydraulic Cylinders and Hoses - New Starter - New Radiator - All New Exhaust System ENGINE / TRANSMISSION: I haven't had any engine or tranny work done but both seem good. No oil burning or noises. The exhaust runs all the way to the back and is brand new with a great exhaust note. CONVERTIBLE TOP: The top is in good condition. The rear window is a bit foggy but not bad. At highway speeds the vinyl slaps around a bit and I think it could use being tacked down somewhere. As you can see in the pictures, no holes, rips or other problems with the vinyl. The top is not new, but is in good condition. Hydraulic top has new hoses and cylinders as of a few weeks ago. I don't think it ever had a boot. COLOR: The original color (V-2) was Grenadier Red with a Black top. PAINT / RUST: The trunk lid has bubbling due to that car cover issue and that bit of rust. My plan was to repaint everything from the quarter panels back to clean it all up. Doors forward the paint looks much better. The car appears to have no rust aside from the cosmetic bits at the trunk lid. I have been under the car and I haven't seen any at all including when I swapped out the gas tank. Of course there could be something hidden but I really doubt it. From what I gathered from the pervious owner, The damage to the trunk lid (bubbles and the rust spot) are doe to a car cover holding in moisture. I'm not an expert and I'd welcome an inspector to come out if you have one to make sure. The red paint is rough in the trunk lid area and there is a spot of rust at the top corner of the trunk lid. From a distance the paint looks OK but up close you can see it is in need of a repaint to be a show car. ELECTRICAL: The electrical works but there are some quirks so I added aftermarket gauges to be sure the "idiot lights" were working. Headlights work, radio works, engine electrical works, convertible top motor works. HEATER: The heater is not working and I haven't dug in to see why. I do know that the control rods under the dash are missing. I live in Southern California so I haven't needed it. WEATHERSTRIP: The weatherstrip is in poor shape. That was on the list to replace. REGISTRATION: Tags are current and the title is in my name. I drive the car to work pretty regularly so all is cool there. I took some close up pictures of the ID numbers and the trunk lid. If you want to see the pics, just shoot me a message and I'll get them to you. |

Pontiac could be a phoenix rising from the ashes
Tue, Apr 18 2017Of the deceased American car companies from the past 50 years such as Hummer, Mercury, Oldsmobile, Plymouth and Saturn, I believe the most worthy resurrection would be Pontiac. After all, it's no longer politically correct to drive an ex-military vehicle with single-digit gas mileage, nor do Millennials and Gen-Xers desire AARP-associated nameplates such as Mercury or Oldsmobile. Pontiac was originally founded in 1893 by Albert G. North and Harry G. Hamilton as the Pontiac Buggy Company, due to their location in Pontiac, Michigan. But as the early 1900s automotive revolution took off, they shifted their focus from horse-drawn carriages to motorized transportation. Taking a cue from Oakland County where they were based, they rebranded their organization as the Oakland Motor Company. Within a couple years, sales of Oakland cars were so good that it caught the attention of General Motors and they bought the company. In 1926, GM premiered the first Pontiac and its name drew inspiration from the legendary Native American War Chief, who was famous for the Battle of Bloody Run and opposition of British forces. His likeness was used in early promotional materials as well as the vehicle's emblem which was referred to simply as the "Indian Head". In 1956, the outdated emblem was replaced with a new, sleeker logo that resembled a red arrow head. It was known as "The Dart" and featured a singular star in the center which may have been a nod to Pontiac's successful Star Chief model. The 1960s saw the introduction of several popular models such as the GTO and the Firebird. The GTO was initially offered as an option package on the 1964 Tempest, and the name was the brainchild of John Delorean, who would later go on to form his own eponymous automobile company. The Firebird debuted in 1967 as a pony-car foil to Ford's award-winning Mustang. Although mechanically similar to Chevrolet's Camaro, the Firebird boasted a distinct sheetmetal nose and tail to help visually distinguish it. The 1980s were another adventurous time for Pontiac, and GM took advantage of the sales momentum by running a successful ad campaign. It proclaimed "We Build Excitement" and highlighted an arrangement with musicians Daryl Hall and John Oats. The fiery Fiero was a home-run for Pontiac and it was introduced in 1983 as an '84 model. Not only was it the first U.S. produced mid-engine sports coupe, but it also utilized lightweight, dent-resistant body panels.
GM recalling another 2.7 million vehicles in five separate campaigns
Thu, 15 May 2014The recalls keep rolling in from General Motors, evidently keen to avoid repeating the mistakes of the ignition-switch debacle and clean house. This time they're all coming at once, with five separate recalls announced together covering approximately 2.7 million vehicles.
The largest of the five actions involves over 2.4 million units of the previous-generation Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura in order to fix brake light wiring harness, which have been found to be susceptible to corrosion. The recall is separate from the 56k Aura sedans which GM recently recalled over faulty shift cables, not to mention the previous massive recall of 1.3 million vehicles - some of them the same models - but appears to have resulted from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation that started with the G6 almost a year ago.
The second-largest campaign involves the 2014 Chevy Malibu, specifically those fitted with GM's 2.5-liter engine and stop/start system, approximately 140,000 examples of which has been found to have problematic brakes. The issue does not appear to be connected to the recall of 8k Malibu and Buick LaCrosse sedans (also involving brake woes) which we reported upon last week. Four crashes have been reported in such models, but GM admits it's not yet clear if the problem was a contributing factor in the accidents.
Junkyard Gem: 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix Daytona 500 Edition
Tue, Aug 29 2017The W Platform proved to be extremely long-lived and versatile for General Motors, remaining in production from 1988 all the way through 2016. You had your Impalas and your Regals and your Cutlass Supremes, and of course the 1988-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix was a W-body. For the 2000 model year, Pontiac made the racy-looking Daytona 500 Edition Grand Prix, an example of which I just found in a Northern California self-service wrecking yard. 2,000 of these cars were made, presumably because it was the year 2000, and each one sports plenty of cool-looking Daytona 500 graphics. Perhaps some Regal owner will buy these seats and swap them. This is the second junked Daytona 500 Grand Prix I have seen recently, after this one in Colorado. The Daytona 500 was about the same as the GTP version, with Eaton-supercharged 3800 engine making a respectable 240 horsepower. Disappointingly, this car has an automatic transmission. It never saw 150,000 miles, unlike most 21st-century W-bodies I see in wrecking yards. Featured Gallery Junked 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix Daytona 500 Edition View 21 Photos Auto News Pontiac Sedan
