Up for sale is an automotive icon: a 1979 Pontiac Firebird Formula. Most of these 'birds had the modestly powered 301 or 305 engine. Some had the more robust 350. At some point some wise person thought this Formula needed the more powerful engine that it deserves and put in an awesome 403 Olds-which was a factory option. Think of it as correcting a wrong! The car can fly! It has the correct and sought after snow-flake wheels which are in good shape. The body looks pretty sharp, the paint has a good shine to it. There is a fleck or three missing but is quite presentable. The only rust I can see is a bit of surface rust on the hood near the right hood air scoop. The interior is in very nice condition. Its what some term a "20 footer". Some idiot put in a temporary dash cap that does not quite match-oh wait, that was me. Sorry. It will need a new decal kit if you want to start going to shows but as a driver its pretty much good to go. The car starts right up every time and did all winter. I've been driving it everyday and it goes down the road at a good clip, draws smiles and turns heads every time I head out the driveway. I suspect it will need new shocks and the tires are old but they are serving well. I don't have a lot of history on this car. I do know it spent some years of its life in a shed in southern Illinois, a fate that I saved it from. The title I got was clear and mileage exempt due to age. My title says what's on the odometer which is 35 K. I cannot swear that's the true mileage so its either 35 or a surprisingly fit 135. I drive cars but I don"t fix them. There may be other issues not readily apparent-but I have been driving this car on a daily basis to work, to kid's sports games, to grocery store etc and it has never failed to start, stall out or leave me stranded. Feel free to send me an email but I would prefer if you just called with any questions. two-oh-two five five oh-oh oh oh eight-my name is Claude. I suspect that many people reading this listing will know more about cars in general and this car in particular than I do so if you want to call and ask about "compression ratios" or some such its going to be a boring conversation but I will do the best I can. This car according to the NADA guide in average condition with the 403 is worth close to $13,000. My reserve is thousands less than that. Please bid with care and only do so with the realization that the successful bidder has entered into a legally binding contract. The winning bidder agrees to send me $750 via Paypal within 24 hours of close of the auction and pay the balance with bank wire, cash or cashier's check within 7 days. If you are local or near local you are invited to see/drive vehicle which is located just outside of Washington, DC. I am happy to keep the car here free of charge for up to 30 days. I will help with loading if you want it shipped.

Junkyard Gem: 2008 Pontiac G5 Coupe
Sun, Apr 9 2023In the grim early days of the Great Recession, the situation at GM's Pontiac Division didn't feel so great but there was some cause for optimism. The Solstice still had a certain glow, the Holden Commodore-based G8 had just arrived, and vehicle shoppers could stride into their local Pontiac showrooms and choose from eight different models bearing the iconic arrowhead badge. Yes, there were still new Torrents and Grand Prix and Vibes for sale in 2008, and of course the Cavalier-twin Sunfire had been replaced by the Cobalt-twin G5 by that time. Here's one of those G5s, found in a Colorado Springs car graveyard. It wasn't long after this car was built that everything went to hell for Pontiac. In April of 2009, GM announced that the Pontiac Division would be "phased out" over the next few years. Just to drive home the point, GM itself filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy five weeks later. GM had already offed Oldsmobile—a marque dating back to 1897, making it nearly 30 years Pontiac's senior—five years earlier, so everybody knew there would be no reprieve in this case. Just to confuse everybody, Pontiac dealers offered a G3-badged Chevy Aveo (aka Daewoo Kalos) to sell alongside the G5 for 2009, but by 2010 there were just two new Pontiac models still standing in the United States: the G6 and the Vibe. Just over 70,000 G5s were sold in the United States during the 2007-2009 model years, making these cars fairly rare. The Cobalt/G5 ignition-switch fiasco of the mid-2010s really hammered their resale value at the time. Sometimes the definition of "Gem" refers to historical value, not the happier kind. Speaking of ignition switches, the key is still in this one. That generally means that a junkyard vehicle is a dealership trade-in or insurance total that couldn't sell at auction. This one is a base model, which listed at $15,675 (about $22,040 in 2023 dollars). The snazzier G5 GT started at $19,850 ($27,911 now) that year. The engine in this car is a 2.2-liter Ecotec four-banger rated at 148 horsepower and 152 pound-feet (the GT got a 2.4 with 171 hp/167 lb-ft). A five-speed manual was standard equipment, but the buyer of this car paid extra for the automatic. GM stuck these little "Mark of Excellence" badges on the fenders of its vehicles starting in 2005, then ditched the idea in 2009. I have vivid memories of this logo from the seatbelt buttons in my parents' 1973 Sportvan Beauville.
Aficionauto sits down with The Hoff and KITT
Fri, 10 Oct 2014The latest video from The Aficionauto is the perfect palate cleanser for Knight Rider fans after finding out that Justin Bieber is the voice of KITT in an upcoming film. Host Christopher Rutkowski says that the Knight Industries Two Thousand is one of the most requested vehicles to appear on the series and for good reason - Michael Knight's Pontiac Trans-Am is among the most famous cars to ever appear on television.
While the video isn't able to showcase one of the original KITTs from the series, it does get star David Hasselhoff to drive his personal replica and talk about the lasting legacy of the show. The highlight here might be seeing The Hoff back behind the wheel in the open desert basically recreating Knight Rider's opening sequence.
With all of its flashing lights and gizmos, you can probably make the argument that KITT is pretty cheesy, and the show itself was never exactly a pillar of high-quality drama on television. Despite that, the series still provides a ton of good-natured fun, and The Hoff's continued enthusiasm for it is pretty infectious. Check out The Aficionauto video to take another ride with Knight Rider.
Junkyard Gem: 1991 Pontiac Grand Am LE with Quad 4 Engine
Wed, May 9 2018GM introduced the N-Body compact platform with the Oldsmobile Calais and Pontiac Grand Am for the 1985 model year and continued building N-based cars through 1998. Most of these cars weren't interesting from an enthusiast standpoint, but a handful rolled off the assembly line with raucous DOHC Oldsmobile Quad 4 engines and manual transmissions, and those cars were plenty of fun. Here's a 1991 Grand Am with that rare setup, photographed in a self-service yard in California's Central Valley. The base engine in the 1991 Grand Am was the 110-horsepower, 2.5-liter pushrod Iron Duke, an engine that might have been fine on a Romanian tractor in 1953 but had no place on an American street car as the 21st century approached. Fortunately, GM started bolting the modern 2.3-liter DOHC Quad 4 engine into 1988 cars, and this was a proper four-cylinder. The Quad 4 ran a little rough and uncivilized, and it had its share of reliability problems, but you could rev the piss out of it and it made good power. In 1991, this engine was rated at 180 hp. That made this 2,592-pound sedan pretty quick. Unfortunately, the slushboxization of America had progressed with depressing rapidity during the 1980s, and by 1991 most Grand Am buyers — even the ones who opted for the Quad 4 — chose the automatic transmission. That didn't happen with this car, though — it boasts a rugged Getrag 5-speed instead of the happiness-amputating three-speed automatic. Yes, that's the kind of odometer reading you'd expect to see on an Accord or Maxima from this era. Someone loved this car and took care of it. Here we see an interesting mix of 1980s and 1990s car-radio technology. CD players in cars were still costly luxury items in 1991, seldom seen in affordable cars like the Grand Am, while 1980s-style slider-style EQ controls were on the way out. This Delco unit straddles both decades nicely. I seek out Quad 4-equipped cars during my junkyard travels, and I have photographed quite a few: this '89 Cutlass Calais, this '90 Cutlass Calais, this '90 Grand Am, this '91 Quad 442, this '93 Achieva SCX, and this '98 Cavalier Z24. It's a shame that Buick never put the Quad 4 in the Reatta, which was a fine car ruined by a somnolent and obsolete V6. The music in this ad is even more early-1990s than Crystal Pepsi.
