I HAVE HERE A SUPER RARE 1983 OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS "SPECIAL EDITION" SUPREME BROUGHAM. IT IS SHOWROOM CONDITION. A MUST SEE CAR AND A REAL SURVIVOR. IT IS ALL ORIGINAL WITH ONLY 23,000 MILES. IT HAS NEVER BEEN DRIVEN IN THE WINTER MONTHS OR ON BAD DAYS, AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN KEPT IN A CLIMATE CONTROLLED GARAGE UP ON JACK STANDS EVERY WINTER. MY SON IS THE SECOND OWNER FOR ALMOST 11 YEARS. THE ORIGINAL OWNER SOLD IT TO HIM BECAUSE HE KNEW HE WOULD TAKE CARE OF IT AND HIS OWN SON WAS ABOUT TO TURN 16 AND HE DID NOT WANT HIM DRIVING IT. THE ORIGINAL OWNER RECEIVED THIS CAR AS A HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION GIFT FROM HIS PARENTS. HE HAS THREE BROTHERS AND EACH ONE GOT A CUTLASS FOR GRADUATION. THE "SPECIAL EDITION" IS A DEALER ORDERED ONE TIME CAR. IT IS ONE YOU CAN FIND VERY LITTLE INFORMATION ON. YOU CAN GOOGLE IT TO SEE THE DIFFERENT PACKAGE THAT WAS ON THE SPECIAL EDITION, BUT THERE IS NO OTHER INFORMATION LIKE HOW MANY WERE MADE,ETC. YOU COULD NOT EVEN SEE A PICTURE OF ONE UNTIL THEY PICKED UP A PICTURE OF OURS WITH THIS ONE.  THIS ONE IS PAINTED A 1984 TORANADO AUTUMN RED FIRE-MIST METALLIC AND WAS HAND SANDED EITHER AT THE FACTORY OR THE DEALER, PIN STRIPPING WAS HAND PAINTED ON  AND THEN CLEAR COATED, WHICH WAS ALSO RARE FOR THAT TIME. CLEAR COAT WAS STILL BEING EXPERIMENTED WITH AT THE FACTORY THEN. THIS WAS PART OF THE SPECIAL EDITION PACKAGE ALSO. THE PAINT STILL LOOKS AS NEW! THE INTERIOR SHOWS NO WEAR EITHER. THIS CAR IS ONE "REAL SURVIVOR"!  WE HAVE ALL THE HISTORY ON THE CAR,  WHAT DEALER IT CAME FROM & WHO OWNED IT ORIGINALLY. I HAVE THE ORIGINAL CATALYTIC CONVERTER. IT WAS REMOVED AND REPLACED WITH A REPLACEMENT PIPE WHEN THE CAR WAS NEW. THE ORIGINAL OWNER HAS A REVERBERATOR-EQUALIZER? INSTALLED AND IT STILL WORKS GREAT. IT AMPLIFIES THE RADIO AND MAKES IT SOUND A LOT BETTER. EVERYTHING ON THIS CAR WORKS RIGHT DOWN TO THE CLOCK. I HAVE DRIVEN IT 4-5 TIMES INTO TOWN LAST SUMMER AND WAS ALWAYS AFRAID IT MIGHT GET A CHIP IN THE WINDSHIELD, BECAUSE THERE ISN'T ONE. EVEN THE FRONT OF THE CAR IS VERY HARD TO FIND A CHIP. IT HAS NEVER EVER BEEN TOUCHED UP EITHER! THERE IS ONE LITTLE CHIP ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE BEHIND THE DOOR AND ONE DING IN THE TRIM OVER THE BACK TIRE, ALSO ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. LIKE I SAID BEFORE THIS IS REALLY A MUST SEE CAR. IT RUNS AND HANDLES LIKE A NEW CAR. NOW, THIS CAR STILL HAS THE ORIGINAL TIRES ON IT AND MOST PEOPLE WOULD SAY THEY WOULD BE ROTTEN BUT THESE HAVE LOTS OF TREAD ON THEM AND NO CRACKING OR DRY ROT WHATSOEVER. I HAVE DRIVEN IT 60-65 MPH AND IT HANDLES GREAT, BUT IF YOU WERE PLANING ON DRIVING IT ON AN INTERSTATE AND RUNNING 70 MPH ALL THE TIME I WOULD REPLACE THE TIRES. LOOK CLOSELY AT THE PICTURE OF THE WINDOW STICKER AND IT WILL SHOW EVERYTHING THAT THE SPECIAL EDITION PACKAGE OFFERED ON THIS CAR.  THIS CAR WAS UNDERCOATED WHEN NEW AND YOU WILL SEE THAT SOME OF THE UNDERCOATING HAS STARTED TO PEEL OFF AFTER 31 YEARS. IT HAS NEVER BEEN PAINTED BLACK UNDERNEATH !! THE CAR IS IN MY NEIGHBOR'S GARAGE BECAUSE IT IS HEATED AND AIR CONDITIONED AND UP ON STANDS WITH A BATTERY TENDER ON IT. PLEASE CALL OR E-MAIL ME FOR YOUR QUESTIONS. MY SON KNOWS A LOT MORE ABOUT THIS CAR THAN I DO AND I WILL GIVE YOU HIS E-MAIL OR PHONE # IF I CAN'T ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS. I WILL WORK WITH ANY FOREIGN BUYERS.I WILL REQUIRE $500.00 DOWN BY PAY PAL AND THE REMAINING AMOUNT IN CASH OR BANK TO BANK TRANSFER. 870-431-5107 BILL

This Or That: 1980 Oldsmobile 442 vs. 1989 BMW 635CSi [w/poll]

Thu, 09 Oct 2014

The last time I roped a coworker into an automotive debate, I lost. Resoundingly, I might add. Still, 2,385 voters chose to cast their lots for the Fiat 500 Abarth, as opposed to 5,273 choosing the Ford Fiesta ST, and so I can rest easy in the knowledge that at least 30 percent of you, dear readers, see things my way. I still like to think we have more fun, too.
My loss in the first round of our This or That series, in which two Autoblog editors pick sides on any given topic and then attempt to explain why the other is completely wrong, didn't stop me from picking another good-natured fight, this time with Senior Editor Seyth Miersma. Last time, our chosen sides were eerily similar in design, albeit quite different in actual execution. This time, our vehicular peculiarities couldn't seemingly fall any further from one another: A 1980 Oldsmobile 442 wouldn't seem to match up in comparison to a 1989 BMW 635CSi.
How did we come up with such disparate contenders? Simple, really. Seyth and I mutually agreed to choose a car that's currently for sale online. It had to be built and sold in the 1980s, and it had to be a coupe. The price cap was set at $10,000. The fruits of our searching labors will henceforth be disputed, with Seyth on the side of the Germans, and myself arguing in favor of the Rocket Olds. Am I setting myself up for another lopsided loss?

eBay Find of the Day: 1976 GMC Motorhome is a jolly green giant

Wed, 18 Jun 2014

If you have a need to relive the 1970s, then here is the vehicle for you. This groovy blast from the past is a 1976 GMC Motorhome currently for auction in Florida on eBay Motors, and it is one green machine - just not in the modern sense.
The seller claims that this beast has had just two owners and has covered a mere 61,308 miles in its decades on the road. It's reportedly never been restored or repainted and comes with all of the necessary books and manuals. A 7.5-liter (455-cubic-inch) Oldsmobile V8 with a three-speed Turbo-Hydramatic automatic transmission powering the front wheels propels this far-out RV, and the double set of rear wheels out back use a self-leveling air suspension to provide a cushy ride.
The purported low miles and good condition really make this GMC a stand out, though. The exterior combination of lime stripes and beige with just a touch of green is like nothing else on the road today. Plus, the polished bumpers and wheels make it all pop. Inside, it's even better with monochromatic green upholstery and shag carpet. It features everything you'd ever need on a long trip, including a bathroom, kitchenette and lots of seating. The only hint of modernization is an HD TV next to the stove, but its size is a perfect fit for the hole there.

GM recalling 8.4M cars, 8.2M related to ignition problems

Mon, 30 Jun 2014

General Motors today announced a truly massive recall covering some 8.4 million vehicles in North America. Most significantly, 8.2 million examples of the affected vehicles are being called back due to "unintended ignition key rotation," though GM spokesperson Alan Adler tells Autoblog that this issue is not like the infamous Chevy Cobalt ignition switch fiasco.
For the sake of perspective, translated to US population, this total recall figure would equal a car for each resident of New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Montana, Delaware, South Dakota, Alaska, North Dakota, the District of Columbia, Vermont and Wyoming. Combined. Here's how it all breaks down:
7,610,862 vehicles in North America being recalled for unintended ignition key rotation. 6,805,679 are in the United States.
