New Nissan Leaf looking more and more like 105-mile EV

Sun, May 31 2015

The next-generation Nissan Leaf could see the light of day as soon as 2017. In the meantime, the Japanese automaker may have a treat for electric-vehicle enthusiasts. Think of it as a 21-mile salute. Looking to spur what's recently been lagging sales, we're hearing rumors that Nissan might offer a top-of-the-line Leaf that will include a 30-kilowatt-hour battery instead of the standard 24-kWh version this fall, Hybrid Cars says, citing InsideEVs. That means that the Leaf's 84-mile single-charge range could be extended to about 105 miles. "We have made no public announcement about the 2016 Nissan LEAF," Nissan spokesman Brian Brockman told AutoblogGreen. "We do not comment on future product details." Nissan could use something fresh with the Leaf, which has a sales pattern that was up last year but down in 2015. Through April, Leaf sales were down 22 percent from a year earlier to 5,638 units. That outpaces the Chevrolet Volt extended-range plug-in by a two-to-one margin, but the second-gen Volt is due some time this fall. As for details on the next-generation Leaf, few have emerged. We've heard the car will look less quirky and, of course, be equipped with a longer single-charge range, but beyond that, it's all a bit of a mystery. Related Video:

2015 Nissan GT-R updated with new lights, more refined ride

Tue, 19 Nov 2013

The Nismo version of Nissan's high-tech supercar may be getting most of the headlines today, but we shouldn't forget that the car on which it's based, the garden-variety GT-R, has been significantly updated for 2015, as well.
What Nissan engineers focused on for the new model year was making the GT-R a more well-rounded GT car. That means dialing some more compliance into the car's very firm suspension for a more comfortable ride, as well as lightening up the steering at low speeds to make urban maneuvering easier. The braking calibration has also been changed to be more linear and smooth when slowing from normal, everyday speeds. Does this mean the GT-R has gone soft? We'll reserve judgment until we drive it, but Nissan claims the new refinements giving the car "multi-dimensional performance."
The GT-R also gets new lighting technology for 2015, including multi-LED headlights that lend the car a new light signature at night, and the LED taillight rings are now complete circles instead of rings of dots. The headlights are also now controlled by an Adaptive Front Lighting System, which sounds similar to other systems that aim light where the car is being turned, but Nissan's system adjusts the angle of the lights depending on vehicle speed - at higher speeds the lights are angled to project their illumination further.

Recharge Wrap-up: BYD building e6 for Taiwan, Formula E announces season two test dates

Mon, Mar 23 2015

The West Coast Electric Highway in Oregon and Washington offers EV drivers a lot of freedom to travel. With fast chargers available along I-5 and many other highways, drivers can travel through large parts of the Northwest without worrying about being stranded. Most chargers are 20 to 30 miles apart throughout the network - which is helpful considering the extra energy needed to climb the many hills - but things get a little more difficult at the border with California. From Ashland, Oregon southward, there isn't another fast charger for about 200 miles. Read more at Green Car Reports. The BYD e6 will be built in Taiwan for the Taiwanese market. AJ Greentech Holdings will manufacture the electric crossover taxi, which can travel 186 miles on a single charge. "This contract will ensure that our initiative for revolutionizing green energy transportation is carried out," says AJ Greentech Holdings CEO Chu Li An. "By driving this e6 electric taxi, drivers will save 10,000 Taiwan dollars a year on transportation costs, an unparalleled deal, while at the same time, providing a safer environment for all the citizens of Taiwan." Nissan Leaf customers who purchase beginning April 1 will be able to charge for free at the nine locations as part of the automaker's "No Charge to Charge" program. "In Indianapolis, we are taking bold steps to reduce our city's oil dependence," says Mayor Greg Ballard. "Growing our citywide network of EV charging stations is important as we transition the city's entire fleet off foreign oil and work with residents to increase their access to electric vehicles." Testing will take place in August at Donington Park in Leicestershire, England, where Formula E has its headquarters. Teams will be testing cars with powertrains from eight new manufacturers for the second season. The public is welcome to come watch on the last day of testing, August 25.
