Prince Charles tours Nissan Leaf plant in Sunderland, UK

Sat, Jan 24 2015

Environmental sustainability and job training. Those are two of the issues the UK's Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, has long supported. And that's why the king-to-be paid a visit to Nissan's Sunderland plant earlier this week. As shows in a two-minute video from Broadcast Exchange, Prince Charles took a tour of the plant, checking out the production line while conferring with the young (and slightly star-struck) students there who were learning a thing or two about building a car, electric Nissan style. The Sunderland plant is located about 285 miles north of London. The factory runs an apprenticeship program for budding car-builders and employs about 6,700 people. The Nissan Leaf electric vehicles built there are sold in Europe, where Leaf sales jumped 33 percent last year. Opened in 1986, the Sunderland factory broke ground on its battery-production facilities in 2010 and began producing the Leaf in the spring of 2013 after Nissan invested about $635 million upgrading the plant to handle electric-vehicle and lithium-ion battery production. Even before the EV battery production activity the Sunderland plant burnished its green credentials by installing wind turbines to help with the power supply. Prince Charles already has his credentials (sort of), thanks to a biofuel Jaguar and a wine-powered Aston Martin. Check out the video with Prince Charles below. Recharge Wrap-Up: Georgia lawyers love the Nissan Leaf, 2B vehicles by 2035

Wed, Jul 30 2014

Loads of lawyers at a firm in Georgia are taking advantage of the state's EV tax credit. Georgia offers a tax credit on leases and purchases of electric vehicles for 20 percent of the car's value, up to $5,000. This has created a trend among lawyers at Arnall Golden Gregory, who one after another have been switching from gas-powered cars to the all-electric Nissan Leaf. They appreciate the environmental benefits, as well as toll exemption and access to HOV lanes, but the tax credit seems to be the biggest motivation to switch. Says lawyer Scott Wandstrat, "Everybody is signing up, now that all the cool kids are doing it." Read more at Daily Report. (Thanks to Kevin D. for the tip!) There's an easy way to see what kind of battery pack a Tesla Model S is using. Underneath the car on the passenger side, just behind the front wheel is a sticker on the outside of the battery pack. At the top is the battery size, 60 kWh or 85 kWh. Below that is a part number, followed by a letter. According to this Tesla Motors Club wiki, those numbers denote new or refurbished battery packs. The A, B or D following that number refers to the generation of battery, which also corresponds to charging capabilities. Knowing how to decode a Tesla pack could be useful if you ever need to replace your battery. Get more details at Teslarati. There will be 2 billion vehicles in use by 2035, according to a forecast by Navigant Research. The group who brought you the fuel consumption figures we shared with you previously estimates that there are currently almost 1.2 billion light-duty vehicles in use today. Navigant expects stop-start technology to grow, with 45 percent of vehicles on the road being equipped with it by 2035. Read more at Green Car Reports. Nissan Leaf, e-NV200 get orange treatment for Ultraman Ginga S

Fri, Jun 13 2014

The automobile-as-crime-fighting-teammate concept dates back at least to the 1960s Batman television series, gained further currency during the 1980s with Knight Rider and was referenced in the recent Kia ads featuring Los Angeles Clippers basketball star Blake Griffin and Jack McBrayer of 30 Rock fame. Now, Nissan has put a bright, colorful spin on the idea by tricking out both a Leaf electric vehicle and an e-NV200 electric van for the Japanese television show Ultraman Ginga S. A far cry from the aforementioned muscle cars (the Leaf powertrain delivers just 107 horsepower), the vehicles still cut dashing figures by featuring a lot of orange, a bunch of geegaws, a body kit and cannons. Yes, cannons. They were shown off at the Tokyo Toy Show. The Ultraman Ginga series debuted on Japanese television just last year, according to the Internet Movie Database (IMDB). Nissan started making the real-world e-NV200 electric van in Spain in May. No plans have been announced for US sales, though the Japanese automaker will export the van to its home country. There's an explanatory video and Nissan's press release about the Ultraman Ginga vehicles below, but we apologize in advance, as you will need to be able to read Japanese for the PR.
