Nissan considering Rogue Hybrid for US

If Nissan can pull 48 miles per gallon out of a hybrid version of the Rogue we say "go for it" to the rumored discussions it may be considering just such a vehicle for the United States. The Japanese automaker is already gearing up to start selling the X-Trail (the JDM Rogue) in hybrid form in Japan. So why not the US? Indeed, the compact crossover may soon get a hybrid version here, Automotive News says, citing comments from Rogue chief engineer Nobusuke Toukura. The X-Trail Hybrid, which goes on sale in Japan next month, cuts nitrogen oxide emissions by 75 percent compared to the gas-powered version while offering more torque from of a smaller gas engine. The model, which sells in the $23,000-to-$27,000 range, also gets an impressive 48 mpg (on the more lenient Japan driving cycle). NIssan USA spokesman Brian Brockman said the company hadn't made any announcements regarding a possible Rogue Hybrid for the US and declined to comment further. The Rogue is Nissan's second-best-selling model in the US, behind the Altima. Through March, Rogue sales were up 28 percent from a year earlier to more than 64,000 units. While hybrids account for a far higher percentage of new vehicles in Japan than in the US, increased US fuel-economy standards combined with the model's popularity make the Rogue Hybrid a fairly logical next step for the model.

Prince Charles tours Nissan Leaf plant in Sunderland, UK

Environmental sustainability and job training. Those are two of the issues the UK's Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, has long supported. And that's why the king-to-be paid a visit to Nissan's Sunderland plant earlier this week. As shows in a two-minute video from Broadcast Exchange, Prince Charles took a tour of the plant, checking out the production line while conferring with the young (and slightly star-struck) students there who were learning a thing or two about building a car, electric Nissan style. The Sunderland plant is located about 285 miles north of London. The factory runs an apprenticeship program for budding car-builders and employs about 6,700 people. The Nissan Leaf electric vehicles built there are sold in Europe, where Leaf sales jumped 33 percent last year. Opened in 1986, the Sunderland factory broke ground on its battery-production facilities in 2010 and began producing the Leaf in the spring of 2013 after Nissan invested about $635 million upgrading the plant to handle electric-vehicle and lithium-ion battery production. Even before the EV battery production activity the Sunderland plant burnished its green credentials by installing wind turbines to help with the power supply. Toyota will begin selling its hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCV) in Japan in December. The US and Europe can expect to see the car become available next summer. The FCV, which will likely be called "Mirai" (meaning "future") in Japan, is ready for production ahead of its initial deadline at the end of the fiscal year in March. Toyota planned for annual production of 700 units, but might increase output to meet higher-than-expected demand, which is currently nearing 1,000 units. The cars will mostly be sold in the four cities where a hydrogen fueling infrastructure is already being put in place: Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka and Fukuoka. Read more at Nikkei Asian Review. Nissan is testing the Leaf EV as part of an energy management system including "Leaf to Home" technology. The system allows the Leaf to help support the power grid during peak energy usage, or provide backup power to a home or building during outages, particularly in emergencies like natural disasters. Using the Leaf's battery to provide electricity during peak hours would lessen the demand on the grid and make the system work more efficiently. Furthermore, if consumers are compensated for the energy saved by using the Leaf for power during periods of high demand, it could encourage more people to adopt the EV. CDP keeps track of how much companies are disclosing about their impact on global climate change. "The need for data on corporate climate change impacts and strategies to reduce them has never been greater," says CDP CEO Paul Simpson. "For this reason we congratulate those businesses that have achieved a position on CDP's Climate Disclosure Leadership Index." Scientists at Stanford University have developed a lithium ion battery that can warn users before it overheats. A thin layer of copper between the anode and the layer separating the anode from the cathode acts as a sensor. When it detects lithium buildups from overcharging are approaching the separator, it sends an early alert long before it gets to a point where it would cause a short (which could lead to a fire).
