The birth of a drifter, meet James Deane
Wed, Apr 1 2015Drifting is sometimes a maligned from of motorsport because it's scored by judges rather than the outcome of shedding tenths off of lap times. But that doesn't mean the people behind the wheel are lacking in skill. In a new documentary series XCar Films interviews European drift champion James Deane, and of course he also shows off his abilities with some smoky slides. Amazingly, Deane got started drifting at just 15 in a Ford Sierra, and a year later, he was already winning championships in a Nissan S14. His current competition weapon combines a Nissan chassis with a turbocharged Toyota 2JZ engine and a NASCAR four-speed gearbox. Deane reckons the setup makes around 650 horsepower. As this video shows, Deane is a master of getting the car to slide just where he wants it to be. Coupled with Xcar's consistently fantastic cinematography, there's an interesting story here of a racer stepping up the ladder of competition. Club to restore amazeballs Datsun Safari Rally Z
Sun, 15 Sep 2013Thanks to the Nissan Restoration Club, a legendary rally car is coming back to life. At the recent Nissan 360 media event, the Japanese automaker announced that its restoration club is bringing the Safari Rally Z back to original running condition. A variant of the Fairlady Z (or Datsun 240Z in the US), the Safari Rally Z has a fastback coupe body and a 215-horsepower inline-six engine. It won East African Safari Rally championships in both 1971 and 1973. The restoration is scheduled for completion this December.
Formed in 2006, Nissan's Restoration Club is comprised of 60 volunteer members who are passionate about Nissan's historic racecars. The club's past restoration projects include the 1964 Skyline racecar and 1947 Tama electric vehicle. Read the press release below for all the details on the latest restoration, and check out the gallery for photos of the Safari Rally Z as well as the 1972 Fairlady 240Z.
Rob Parsons, paraplegic, can drift better than you
Sat, Apr 4 2015"When something happens, you deal with it, and you move on. You don't dwell on something you can't control." Those are positive words coming from anybody. But it's particularly inspiring when the speaker is Rob Parsons. He was a competitor and later an event judge in the Dsport series until a dirt bike crash took Parson's ability to walk. He didn't let that get in the way of custom building a drift car that works with hand controls. And now that it works, he's plans to use his car to help other who share his automotive passion but can't operate pedals. The vehicle itself is based around a 1991 Nissan 180SX chassis with a 5.7-liter supercharged LS1 V8 under the hood, according to his website. To make the machine drivable for people without the use of their legs, Parsons made a hand control setup, and he claims to be faster now than years ago. This story of fighting past the seeming insurmountable challenges is truly heartwarming, and it's amazing to watch Parsons at work. A warning: there is some brief, not-safe-for-work language early in the video.
