Nissan Sway displays the future of the compact hatch [w/videos]
Wed, Mar 4 2015Nissan is giving a glimpse at its future compact hatchback design with the Sway Concept at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. The little, egg-shaped hatchback cribs styling elements from earlier show cars from the brand and mixes them together into an attractive five-door. Though, the company makes no mention of the model's powertrain. The Sway's most eye-arresting feature is its arching hood that leads to a deep, V-shaped grille similar to the Lannia Concept. The design element is flanked on both sides by boomerang-shaped LED headlights, and there's a splash of color from the orange accents under the air intakes. To draw the eye from front to rear, a crease flows over the fenders and then sweeps all the way back to the taillights. Nissan's floating roof motif also makes an appearance here, although it's not quite as obvious as on larger vehicles. As is common on show cars, the Sway has suicide doors with no B-pillar to let attendees in Switzerland have a good look inside. The interior appears to be an airy place to take a drive with a panoramic glass roof, and a windshield that rises up over the front occupants' heads. The driver gets a simple instrument cluster that's dominated by just two gauges, but there's a tablet at the center of the dashboard to provide extra info. According to Nissan, the whole point of the Sway's design is to take compact hatchback styling in a bolder direction. The first video below shows off even more angles, and the second has some of the brand's designers going in depth about the car's shape. This content is hosted by a third party. Nissan rethinks the compact hatchback: Introducing the Sway Concept Bold design theme showcases new design language Edgy exterior matched by elegantly simple interior Created to bring fresh, high-end thinking to compact hatchback segment GENEVA – Innovative design and product planning gave birth to the Qashqai and Juke, two of the biggest automotive success stories in recent years. Now the company has applied the same radical thinking to one of the most important sectors of the market: the compact hatchback. Unveiled at the Geneva Show, the Sway is a glimpse at how a future generation of compact Nissan models might look if the company's striking new design language was applied to a European hatchback.
Nissan considering Rogue Hybrid for US
Thu, Apr 16 2015If Nissan can pull 48 miles per gallon out of a hybrid version of the Rogue we say "go for it" to the rumored discussions it may be considering just such a vehicle for the United States. The Japanese automaker is already gearing up to start selling the X-Trail (the JDM Rogue) in hybrid form in Japan. So why not the US? Indeed, the compact crossover may soon get a hybrid version here, Automotive News says, citing comments from Rogue chief engineer Nobusuke Toukura. The X-Trail Hybrid, which goes on sale in Japan next month, cuts nitrogen oxide emissions by 75 percent compared to the gas-powered version while offering more torque from of a smaller gas engine. The model, which sells in the $23,000-to-$27,000 range, also gets an impressive 48 mpg (on the more lenient Japan driving cycle). NIssan USA spokesman Brian Brockman said the company hadn't made any announcements regarding a possible Rogue Hybrid for the US and declined to comment further. The Rogue is Nissan's second-best-selling model in the US, behind the Altima. Through March, Rogue sales were up 28 percent from a year earlier to more than 64,000 units. While hybrids account for a far higher percentage of new vehicles in Japan than in the US, increased US fuel-economy standards combined with the model's popularity make the Rogue Hybrid a fairly logical next step for the model.
Nissan presents NV200 is the brave new face of London taxis [w/video]
Mon, 06 Jan 2014In most cities, just about any vehicle can serve as a taxi - so long as it meets the owner/operator's requirements for reliability, comfort and utility. But certain cities have their own unique taxis, and Nissan has been working hard to corner those markets. It has already designed specific taxis for such locations as New York, Barcelona and Tokyo, but its latest effort will bring a new Hackney Carriage to the streets of London.
A year and a half ago, Nissan displayed its NV200 on the streets of London in traditional black livery. But this new design takes the customization for the British capital one step further. Working closely with the mayor's office and with cab drivers across the city, Nissan's European design center in the Paddington district has reskinned the NV200 specifically to serve as the new black cab in London. The new face features round headlights, a new grille, LED lighting and a restyled front bumper. The steering has also been reconfigured to meet the 25-foot turning circle requirements for Hackney Carriages, as the black cabs are known on the streets of London.
The result is a distinctly British take on the NV200 taxi - one that we're guessing won't go without its fair share of controversy. Nissan will begin offering the black cab at the end of the year with a 1.6-liter gasoline engine mated to an automatic transmission, a powertrain said to be cleaner than the diesels used in existing taxis. And Nissan should know, having supplied many of those 2.7-liter turbodiesels in the '80s and '90s. But if that's not clean enough, the Japanese automaker will also begin selling an electric version, the e-NV200, starting next year. Watch the video clip and read the full details in the press release below.
