Mitsubishi D:X Concept previews the next Delica off-road van

Wed, Oct 25 2023

Besides the Montero/Pajero and the Lancer Evo, perhaps Mitsubishi's most famous model is the Delica. It's a minivan, but it also has serious off-road chops, and it has had them for decades. At the Japan Mobility Show, Mitsubishi showed the D:X Concept, which is a look a the future of the go-anywhere van. The look is almost that of a steroidal VW I.D. Buzz, but it works. It's chunky and aggressive, and of course it has huge tires. The single-box shape is a longstanding tradition of the Delica line for maximum interior space. Noteworthy are the laser headlights. The vertical sections can project lines ahead of the vehicle to help provide an idea of the vehicle width against the environment in tricky maneuvering at night. The interior features three rows of seats, and the seats can slide and swivel for a variety of configurations. Particularly interesting is the lack of a dashboard, as well as anything ahead of where the dash would be. Instead, a glass panel for the grille and a giant screen showing what's under and ahead of front of the vehicle take up the space. This allows for phenomenal forward visibility, especially useful off road. There is a small dash ahead of the driver and the steering wheel that blends into the door, and this is where instrumentation is displayed. Occupants also can enjoy a Yamaha-tuned sound system. Mitsubishi didn't go into much detail on the powertrain. It's a plug-in hybrid, and we wouldn't be surprised if it operates as a series hybrid like the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. And that of course means that the D:X still powers all four wheels, as a Delica should. Mitsubishi also didn't share any sort of production plans. But we expect that a new Delica is on the way that will at least look a lot like this concept, even if some features such as the dash-free interior might not make it. Sadly, we don't expect it to come to America, just like the current Delica. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Ralliart returns to America for 2023

Wed, Aug 31 2022

Mitsubishi announced Wednesday that its storied Ralliart nameplate will return to showrooms for the 2023 model year. The company let slip that its performance sub-brand would make a comeback more than a year ago and even revived it for a show car in Tokyo, but this is the first example of a for-real product shipping with Ralliart branding since it was kicked to the curb in 2010 — years before the compact Lancer it most famously graced was formally discontinued.  For now at least, it appears Ralliart will be a largely aesthetic makeover, with alterations limited to "unique body effects, graphics and other rally-inspired touches." We wouldn't be surprised to see larger wheels, sportier tires and perhaps even some suspension adjustments enter the mix down the line, but for now, Mitsubishi seems content to set modest expectations. Look for variants of the Outlander, Outlander PHEV, Eclipse Cross, Outlander Sport and Mirage, all of which will be built in "limited" numbers.  Elsewhere in 2023 model year news, the Mirage is losing its manual transmission option in favor of a standard CVT, and its base price will increase by $1,600 accordingly. The Outlander Sport and Eclipse Cross will now come standard with AWD, and the latter's base price will increase to $27,140 (including $1,345 for destination). Mitsubishi says more pricing and trim information for the lineup will be provided at a later date, along with more information about the new Outlander plug-in hybrid; the car itself will arrive in showrooms in Q4.  Related Video This content is hosted by a third party. 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV shown, full details coming October 28

Thu, Oct 14 2021

The wait for details on the plug-in hybrid 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander are almost over. The company has been promising the model for quite a while, and it has been tight-lipped about details. But on October 28, the company will reveal nearly all before the SUV's U.S. launch in the second-half of 2022. In the meantime, Mitsubishi released photos of the plug-in model. As you can plainly see, it looks pretty much identical to the non-hybrid variant. The only real exception are the large hybrid badges placed on the doors and on the hatch. The white example in the photos also showcases a black contrast roof that's seemingly unavailable on non-hybrid Outlanders. The interior is also virtually unchanged. Mitsubishi also let slip one other interesting tidbit about the Outlander PHEV before the full reveal: it comes standard with a third row of seats. This is a change from the previous model that was two-row only. This is also interesting considering that Mitsubishi has previously said the new PHEV will have more battery capacity than the outgoing model. When the electrified Outlander has its official reveal in a couple weeks, we should have far more details on the powertrain. We're expecting it will continue to use a pair of electric motors, one for the front wheels and one for the rears. The engine will probably run mainly in a series-hybrid configuration, generating electricity for the motors, and only engaging the drivetrain under particular circumstances in which doing so would provide the necessary power and when it's efficient. Pricing will probably have to wait until closer to the Outlander's on-sale date next year. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences.
