I have decided it's time to sell my '93 3000GT VR4. I bought this car 4 years ago. I bought it because I'd always wanted a VR4 and the AWD was going to be useful where I lived at the time. I bought it from an older gentleman who had too many toys and kept the car 100% stock. The car had about 138k when I bought it, and now has 174k (it's a daily driver, so miles will continue to go up). It's been my daily driver in that time period and very reliable. At about 147k I took the car down for a few months to do some significant work on the car, including new oil pump, new timing belt, new (upgraded) turbos, new (upgraded) radiator, new (upgraded) lifters, and some other items. The car runs great, starts every time, has tons of new parts, and has been very reliable for me. It has always been adult driven and never raced. I'm the first person to modify it, and my goal was to make a fun, reliable, and enjoyable daily driver that could keep the commute fun rather than dull. I have succeeded in this goal, and it is a car that makes a great daily driver but could easily be taken to the track to race! The car came from Texas before I bought it and has no rust. The AC is ice cold and is still R12! I run 15 psi boost, but the car rarely sees above 3500 RPM and even more rarely sees full boost. Like I said, it's adult driven and conservatively so.

I am deciding to sell it primarily because I want a change in my fun car to something different. 4 years is about as long as I live with a car before being ready for something else. I have taken excellent mechanical care of the car as it's my daily driver. It's always received what it needs, and I took parts breaking as an opportunity to upgrade the car further.

First, list of upgrades and notable repairs/new parts:

-PMP FMIC with hard piping
-K&N FIPK
-HKS SSQV3 on recirculate (the right way so the car still runs properly)
-HID headlights
-Mushimoto aluminum radiator
-New cooling hoses
-3SX solid shifter bushings (at the shifter and the transmission - significantly improves shifts)
-15G turbo chargers running 15 PSI boost (adjustable via boost controller)
-3mm lifters (significantly quiets down the valvetrain)
-550 cc injectors
-A'Pex-i S-AFC Fuel controller
-A'Pex-i AVC-R Boost controller
-Chrome ECU (flashable ECU that you can tune with a $100 computer adapter)
-Hotwired Walbro 255 lph fuel pump
-Optima battery
-TEC Front Strut Tower Brace
-New inner and outer tie rods (Moog brand - the best!)
-PST 1-piece carbon fiber driveshaft
-Seats recovered at ~130k, new floor mats ~160k
-One layer of Dynamat under carpeting, in doors, and in trunk (significantly reduces road noise)
-Megan Racing Coilovers (and adjustable rear upper control arms)
-Downpipe (no cats) to 3" Cherry Bomb muffler to dual exhaust (active exhaust delete)
-Solid rear subframe bushings
-Solid diff bushings
-AWS delete
-Addco rear anti-roll bar
-New windshield washer reservoir and pump
-New shift knob and hand brake lever (~160k)
-Steering wheel recovered and thickened (~160k)
-Includes set of four studded snow tires mounted on Stealth rims - this car is amazing in snow!
-New alternator (~165k)
-EGR delete
-Vacuum reduction
-Car actually has the sunroof cover, which is very rare!
-Fuel filter upgraded to Summit Racing filter with -6AN lines
-Custom short-throw shifter, really improves shifts
-New OEM set of ignition coil packs
-MSD 8.5mm ignition wires (done at 147k)
-Iridium plugs (done at 147k)
-Oil pump replaced (done at 147k)
-Timing belt, pulleys, and tensioners (done at 147k)
-3SX aluminum crank pulley (improves responsiveness of engine)
-Accessory belts replaced (done at 147k)
-New wheel bearings at all four wheels
-EBC "Red Stuff" brake pads
-3SX Braided Stainless brake hoses
-3SX FMOC
-The car has two new keys purchased from 3SX - one factory key and their "Metal with Red Diamonds" key

I'm sure I'm forgetting some things, but that's most of it.

Now for the bad:

-The car does leak oil, just like all of them. I add about a quart every 1500 miles, which is not bad for one of these cars
-The car has a minor coolant seep somewhere, I think from the overflow tank. I find I put a bit of coolant in about once every 2-4 weeks. I see minor green stains on the transmission, I just haven't been able to isolate the leak. It's been like this for a long time and has not gotten any worse
-The car could use some body attention. The paint on the hood and front fenders is fading, and the car has a clear bra on it that on the hood and headlights is completely cracked. I got it off the bumper fine, but a body shop needs to get it off the hood and headlights. Also, at one point the door side panel popped off and when opening the door it damaged the front fender. I never did it because I was going to wait until I finished the mechanical upgrades I wanted to do
-The car needs tires, badly. So I will put $300 towards a set of whatever new tires you want for the car and get them mounted, balanced, and a fresh alignment before you take delivery
-I did the tinting on the front two windows. I am not good at doing tinting. It's functional, but not done well. If you want it to look beautiful you should have the tinting redone

I'm happy to help with transport and we can negotiate that. As you can see from the list of work done to the car, the parts alone easily are worth more than the car as a whole. In my opinion put new tires and alignment on it, and it's a great daily driver. Or take it to a body shop for a bit of work and it'll be a great and beautiful daily driver.

Most cars are neglected by their owners for a while because they're thinking about selling it. I am not that way at all, and have decided only recently to sell the car. While the car does have high mileage, you will not find one that has been taken mechanical care of this meticulously for under $15,000.

This car is sold as-is, where-is. Please ask all questions regarding assistance you'd like from me regarding delivery before buying. Feel free to contact me with any questions either through eBay or by phone at 812-243-2585. Cash or wire transfer only is accepted.

Thanks for looking!

Nissan didn't have much say in merger talks, but it had what FCA wanted

Fri, Jun 7 2019

TOKYO — Nissan wasn't consulted on the proposed merger between its alliance partner Renault and Fiat Chrysler, but the Japanese automaker's reluctance to go along may have helped bring about the surprise collapse of the talks. While Nissan Motor Co. had a weaker bargaining position from the start, with its financial performance crumbling after the arrest last year of its star executive Carlos Ghosn, it still had as its crown jewel the technology of electric vehicles and hybrids that Fiat Chrysler wanted. The board of Renault, meeting Thursday, didn't get as far as voting on the proposal, announced last week, which would have created the world's third biggest automaker, trailing only Volkswagen AG of Germany and Japan's Toyota Motor Corp. When the French government, Renault's top shareholder with a 15% stake, asked for more time to convince Nissan, Fiat Chrysler Chairman John Elkann abruptly withdrew the offer. Although analysts say reviving the talks isn't out of the question, they say trust among the players appears to have been broken. "The other companies made the mistake of underestimating Nissan's determination to say, 'No,' " said Katsuya Takeuchi, senior analyst at Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities in Tokyo. The Note, an electric car with a small gas engine to charge its battery, was Japan's No. 1 selling car, the first time in 50 years that a Nissan beat Toyota and Honda. Renault and Fiat Chrysler highlighted possible synergies that come from sharing parts and research costs as the benefits of the merger. But what Fiat Chrysler lacks and really wanted was what's called in the industry "electrification technology," Takeuchi said. With emissions regulations getting stricter around the world, having such technology is crucial. Yokohama-based Nissan makes the world's best-selling electric car Leaf. Its Note, an electric car equipped with a small gas engine to charge its battery, was Japan's No. 1 selling car for the fiscal year through March, the first time in 50 years that a Nissan model beat Toyota and Honda Motor Co. for that title. Nissan is also a leader in autonomous-driving technology, another area all the automakers are trying to innovate. "Although Nissan had no say, its cautionary stance on the merger ended up being very meaningful," Takeuchi said.

Junkyard Gem: 2003 Mitsubishi Diamante VR-X

Tue, Oct 3 2023

Mitsubishi has been selling cars and light trucks under its own name in the United States since the Starion, Tredia, Cordia and Mighty Max appeared here as 1983 models, but only one big luxury sedan has ever been in the Mitsubishi Motors USA lineup: the Diamante. For the last few years of the Diamante's availability here, a factory-hot-rod version of the Diamante known as the VR-X could be purchased. Here's one of those extraordinarily rare cars, now residing in a Denver-area self-service wrecking yard. The Diamante was the successor to the Mitsubishi Sigma, an upscale "pillared hardtop" version of the fifth-generation Galant. The Sigma sold poorly here, but Mitsubishi had hopes of stealing some American-market sales from the strong-selling Lexus ES and Acura Legend. Making a North American version of the swanky Mitsubishi Debonair didn't seem like a wise investment (though some Debonair DNA eventually showed up here, within the Hyundai XG), and so the brand-new Diamante made its North American debut as a 1992 model. The first-generation Diamante was available in both sedan and wagon form, with the wagon getting the axe here after 1995. The second-generation Diamante sedan appeared in American Mitsubishi showrooms as a 1997 model, with sales here continuing through 2004. There was a facelift for the 2002 model year, after several miserable sales years in the United States, and the sporty VR-X version was added to the lineup at that time. The VR-X got some cladding, white analog gauges, a louder audio system, some performance upgrades and a fast-and-furious optional spoiler. The MSRP for the '03 VR-X was $27,557, or about $46,362 in 2023 dollars. The VR-X's engine was a 3.5-liter 6G-series V6, rated at 210 horsepower. This was just five horses better than the regular Diamante's 3.5-liter. All 2003 Diamantes sold in the United States came with mandatory four-speed automatics.  This car, like the Diamante wagons of the middle 1990s, was built in Australia. The leather seats came with VR-X embossing. This is a good example of a rare special-edition car that's not worth much now. Perhaps some Front Range Mitsubishi enthusiast will buy the unique VR-X wheels and other bits before this car goes to the crusher. This content is hosted by a third party. Ex-Green Beret arrested in Ghosn's escape has lived a life of danger

Thu, May 21 2020

This Dec. 30, 2019, image from security camera video shows Michael L. Taylor, center, and George-Antoine Zayek at passport control at Istanbul Airport in Turkey. Taylor, a former Green Beret, and his son, Peter Taylor, 27, were arrested Wednesday in Massachusetts on charges they smuggled Nissan ex-Chairman Carlos Ghosn out of Japan in a box in December 2019, while he awaited trial there on financial misconduct charges. / AP   Decades before a security camera caught Michael Taylor coming off a jet that was carrying one of the world’s most-wanted fugitives, the former Green Beret had a hard-earned reputation for taking on dicey assignments. Over the years, Taylor had been hired by parents to rescue abducted children. He went undercover for the FBI to sting a Massachusetts drug gang. And he worked as a military contractor in Iraq and Afghanistan, an assignment that landed him in a Utah jail in a federal fraud case. So when Taylor was linked to the December escape of former Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn from Japan, where the executive awaited trial on financial misconduct charges, some in U.S. military and legal circles immediately recognized the name. Taylor has “gotten himself involved in situations that most people would never even think of, dangerous situations, but for all the right reasons,” Paul Kelly, a former federal prosecutor in Boston who has known the security consultant since the early 1990s, said earlier this year. “Was I surprised when I read the story that he may have been involved in what took place in Japan? No, not at all.” Wednesday, after months as fugitives, Taylor, 59, and his son, Peter, 27, were arrested in Massachusetts on charges accusing them of hiding Ghosn in a shipping case drilled with air holes and smuggling him out of Japan on a chartered jet. Investigators were still seeking George-Antoine Zayek, a Lebanese-born colleague of Taylor. “He is the most all-American man I know,” TaylorÂ’s assistant, Barbara Auterio, wrote to a federal judge before his sentencing in 2015. “His favorite song is the national anthem.” Kelly, now serving as the attorney for the Taylors, said they plan to challenge JapanÂ’s extradition request “on several legal and factual grounds.” “Michael Taylor is a distinguished veteran and patriot, and both he and his son deserve a full and fair hearing regarding these issues,” Kelly said in an email.
