The manual transmission in the Mini Cooper is officially dead
Tue, Sep 5 2023We feared this might be the case after learning all about the latest Mini Cooper, but now it’s confirmed: The manual Mini is dead. Confirmation of the news comes from Mini boss Stefanie Wurst via an interview with Top Gear. “We wonÂ’t have a manual, unfortunately,” Wurst told TG in reference to the new generation of Cooper. Mini revealed its new model last week in the lead-up to the Munich Motor Show, and while the company was happy to share all the details on the electric E and SE, the gas models remained shrouded in a bit of mystery. We know there will be a base and an S model powered by gasoline engines, and now we know that they will be exclusively equipped with automatic transmissions. The elimination of the manual transmission is a tad ironic, given Mini just recently opened a Mini Manual Driving School in California. The point of that school was to teach people how to operate a manual transmission, but now Mini wonÂ’t have any in its lineup come 2025. This news was also foreshadowed a bit by the introduction of the Mini John Cooper Works 1 to 6 Edition earlier this year. Mini made that model as an ode to the manual, and it limited production to just 999 units worldwide. It looks like that special edition is more of a send-off to the manual transmission than anything at this point. As of now, you can still get the manual transmission on the Mini Hardtop and Convertible models, but the 2024 model year will be the end of this generation of Mini, and with it, the end of the manual transmission in the lineup. Mini Multitone Edition brings triple-color roof to more models
Wed, Aug 31 2022Last year's refreshed Mini line-up introduced the "Multitone" roof for the Mini Cooper SE. It featured three paint colors on the roof that faded into one another. Now that option is available on many more Minis with the Multitone Edition, which also picks up a unique design and trim pieces to accent the fancy top. The Multitone Edition is available on all Mini 3-Door and 5-Door Hardtops as well as the Clubman wagon. The Hardtops are only offered in "Sage Green" while the Clubman only comes in "Indian Summer Red." All of them get a Multitone roof in white, silver and black (the blue and red options from the SE seem to remain exclusive to the little electric hatch). Setting this grayscale roof apart is a set of perpendicular "rainbow" stripes done in a satin clearcoat. This motif is continued around the car where it appears in the two-tone green and red badging on the wheels and fender "scuttles." It also appears on the dashboard and other interior trim. And on the topic of trim, parts that were chrome on regular Mini models are a bright gloss white such as the light surrounds, door handles and fuel filler cap on S models. Two-tone alloy wheels are offered in 17- and 18-inch sizes. Pricing and availability haven't been announced yet. Expect to see the option available sometime this year, and a small premium over whatever trim level it's added to. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. Classic Rover Mini is a passion-inspiring plaything
Sun, 01 Sep 2013Ask anyone that's driven a classic Mini, and they'll probably tell you that their first reaction to driving it was a lot like the start of this video - whooping, shouting, laughing and a whole lot of smiling. This video, from Jon Quirk, editor-in-chief at Auto Trader UK, highlights the connection between him and his Rover Mini Paul Smith. He really nails the man-machine interface that makes owning a great car so much fun. Besides that, Quirk does a good job of enumerating what is so enjoyable about driving a fun car on a twisting road.
For our British readers, this video is also meant to test the waters for a new format from Auto Trader UK, called "I Bought One." With Quirk's Mini, the car-buying site is looking at telling the story of people and their interesting cars. We think this video is a great start, with high production value and solid content. Head on over to the YouTube channel, and let them know what you think. But first, scroll on down for the entire video on this awesome Rover Mini.
