When it was introduced here, there were questions as to the Mini's possibility of success in the American automotive marketplace. Small cars have rarely proven popular here, and ``premium subcompact'' as a viable American automotive category was a fine example of the mathematical concept of a null set. The new Mini succeeded because it was fun. It was fun to look at, it was fun to be seen in, and most importantly, it was fun to drive. The Mini convertible is different. Not only is its top fully automatic - without need of manual latching - it also can partially slide open, while the caris in motion, to form a sunroof. That's merely one example of the Mini's premium feature set. Parent BMW has made nearly all of the comfort, convenience, and luxury features found in its cars available or standard in the Mini. A Mini is economical, and it's a box, but it's most definitely not an econobox. APPEARANCE: The new Mini stays true to Alec Issigonis's original 1959 design - one box for four passengers and luggage, and a smaller box in front for the transversely-mounted engine, with the wheels pushed as far to the corners as possible for maximum space utilization. Today's 12 foot-long Mini is larger than the 10-foot original, but still tiny by contemporary standards. COMFORT: The top goes down or up at the touch of a button, with no manual latching. It can also be put down remotely via the key fob, or up by inserting the key in the door lock. On the way down, it first stops with the front portion rolled back as a sunroof. This can be done in motion, although the car must be stopped to put the top completely down. Like the original Mini, the convertible's trunk lid ishinged at the bottom. Back up front, findbest-in-class seats and retro-modern style. In standard trim, the speedometer is mounted in the center of the dash, where it was in the original Mini, with the tach on the steering column. SAFETY: Fully Integrated Road Safety Technology, a combination of safety features including intelligent front airbags, head and thorax side airbags, and a structure designed for crash protection, including rollovers with a reinforced windshield frame and rear roll bars. Four-wheel antilock disc brakes with electronic brake force distribution and cornering brake control are standard, with Dynamic Stability Control available. PERFORMANCE: Since it's only 165 lbs. heavier than its hardtop counterpart, the Convertible is very nearly as quick, with a 0-60 time of around ten seconds. It has 1.6l 4-Cylinder engine and 5 speed automatic transmission. The vehicle is mechanically sound and the interior looks nice. The engine sounds great, it handles and drives superbly and has no problem developing high speeds. Car runs straight as an arrow and tires do not pull in any direction. Mini Cooper E Classic adds a less expensive trim, at least in Europe
Fri, Feb 16 2024One forgets how many variations there are on the Mini Cooper until Mini rolls out a new generation and they all come quickly. With this fifth-generation Cooper forking into an EV lineup, and Mini introducing ICE and EV ranges separately, every other month it's, "Oh look, another one!" This time it's details on a new trim of the Cooper E that Mini debuted in Munich last September. We also have photos of the Euro-spec version now, which were missing from the debut. Called Classic, it's the entry-level version of the battery-electric two-door hardtop hatchback that, in the UK, comes below the Exclusive and Sport trims. Our trim step for the previous-gen electric Cooper is Classic, Signature, and Iconic. A commenter chided us on a previous post for waiting until the end to mention U.S. availability, so let's get this out of the way now: We don't know if the Cooper E is coming to America. We know we'll get the SE, same as before. We'd support the decision to bring the E here; with the right color combo and wheels, here's your Alec Issigonis special — on the outside, at least — for maybe a couple grand less than the Cooper SE. However, based on the European configurators, we don't see much point.   Every Cooper E gets a 40.7-kWh battery powering an e-motor on the front axle making 181 horsepower and 214 pound-feet of torque, able to go an estimated 190 WLTP miles on a charge. That's 34 horses and 29 pound-feet down on the SE, which isn't so bad. Driving distance is the attention-getter, the E losing 60 miles of estimated range from the SE's 250 WLTP miles.    We all know "Classic" means pared spec, but the Classic is so close to the trim above that it's hard to tell what's been changed beyond the standard wheel and a few options. In the UK, saving GBP2,200 ($2,769 U.S.) to get the Classic instead of the Exclusive trim above means getting a 16-inch standard wheel and a cloth interior trimmed in synthetic leather. The Exclusive starts with a 17-inch wheel and offers two 18-inchers, the Classic is a 16- or 17-inch wheel only. And the Exclusive interior fits mainly synthetic leather seats with cloth uppers. Either cabin comes in a choice of two colors, either black or gray, the Classic with a perforated houndstooth pattern on the seats. On the other hand, the Sunny Side Yellow paint on the hero car above is only available on the Classic. The list of standard features between the two is identical.
Cool Shunnings: Mini helps the Jamaican bobsled team train in lockdown
Fri, Dec 4 2020Need to train for an upcoming outdoor Olympic competition, but COVID restrictions are forcing you to shelter in place? Well, if your sport happens to be bobsled and your place happens to be an indoor ski slope, that just might be doable. Perhaps you remember Jamaica's national bobsled team for pushing a Mini Cooper convertible around earlier this year as a conditioning exercise. If that sounds like a stunt straight out of "Cool Runnings," well, that's pretty much the idea. Now, they're doing it in isolation, within the safe confines of an indoor skiing facility in the UK. Evidently, they're still at it, only now they appear to have better corporate sponsorship (note the Jamaican flag livery on their spankin' new 'vert) and a pandemic-friendly training venue as they undergo conditioning at the UK’s largest indoor slope at The Snow Centre, Hemel Hempstead, ahead of the World Championships in Lake Placid, New York, in February. "This second lockdown has been even harder on our training," said team pilot Shanwayne Stephens. "Matt [Wilson] and DyÂ’Neal [FeÂ’ssal] are new to the team so weÂ’re focusing on gelling together as a team and getting them up to speed – they have never been in a bobsled or even seen one yet!" "Pushing the MINI here may seem like a bit of fun but this has been an important exercise, just being on ice is completely different to training in the summer – the toll on your body is entirely different and you use energy in different ways," Stephens said. "The Snow Centre is only -3 degrees [27 degrees Farenheit], thatÂ’s pretty mild compared to what weÂ’re normally in, and theyÂ’re already complaining about the cold!" Lake Placid is just the next step toward qualification for the Beijing 2022 Winter Games.
Mini fini: The Mini Clubman passes into British motoring history
Mon, Feb 5 2024Au revoir, Clubman. The veddy British Mini model that found a loyal following in the UK and elsewhere for more than a half-century has folded its spilt rear “barn doors” for the final time. The ultimate Clubman — assuming there wonÂ’t be another sequel, and Mini says there won't — rolled off the production line Monday at Mini Plant Oxford in England. The Mini “estate” version bows out after 17 years of build at Oxford and more than a half-million units churned out for deliveries to more than 50 countries. The heritage of the Clubman — and of most Minis — is worth recalling because the brand has spawned such affection among its fans. One has to deep-dive back to the early Sixties, when MiniÂ’s owner, British Motor Corporation (BMC), introduced two estate versions of the original Mini: the Austin Seven Countryman and Morris Mini Traveller. In 1967, the characteristics of existing Mini wagons were combined to form the first Clubman. lt was axed in 1982 — after it was once renamed as the 1000HL — and the Clubman wouldn't return until 2007, with the brand then under the auspices of BMW. Modern vehicle safety standards presented a challenge for those rear doors. “We needed to ensure that both doors would always open fully without obscuring the rear lights, which was a legal requirement,” said Guy Elliott, who was part of the development team for the doors at the time. The reborn Clubman was updated in 2015 for a second generation. It adopted Mini's signature circular daytime running lights, a feature still seen today, and ditched the unusual rear doors for a more conventional setup. Last year Mini launched the “Final Edition” of the car, with a special grille and alloys and limited it to a run of 1,969 units, paying homage to the launch year of the original. The BMW Group says it expects to invest about $750 million in the next few years in realigning the Oxford plant to accommodate assembly space for the upcoming electric Aceman crossover and new Cooper variations later this year.
