Overview

This MG TD was acquired by the MG Car Club, Western NY Centre in June, 2013. The last owner was in the middle of an out-of-state move and was unable to move the MG with him, so he offered it to the club. It is my understanding that the owner searched his boxes for the last ownership document but was unable to locate it.

Upon inspecting the LH chassis leg, I found number 18861 --full VIN was possibly TD/ 18861 which according to the MGCC UK T-register would have been build to EXLNA (export, LHD, North American specification) and would have originally carried engine XPAG/ TD2/ 19219. The site lists August 18, 1952 as the build date for this chassis number.

Overall, it was my impression that there was enough of a car to make an MGTD special out of this –possible Volvo engine conversion? Period Volvo engines have carbs and exhaust ports to match the original MG T-series arrangements and can really ‘look the part’.

Chassis

· Chassis appears to be good overall condition. Steering column was modified with (2) u-joints, probably to facilitate an engine swap. Engine mounts were also welded to the chassis rails in the engine compartment.

· Car is fitted with stock MGTD front drum brakes and 5-lug wheels.

· Car is fitted with what looks like a stock MGA rear axle assembly (complete—drum to drum) with 4-lug Triumph TR3 wheels. The spare wheel is MGTD, 5-lugs.

· There was a driveshaft with it.

· I do not recall about brake master cylinder or pedal assemblies. I think ‘yes’ but am not certain.

· Steering column components were there.

· NO engine or gearbox.

· No exhaust system components.

Body

· Body has (4) very good fenders. Light surface rust but generally appeared to be straight with no perforations.

· Body tub has some rust perforations in the rear panels adjacent to where the rear fenders attach.

· The body tub wood will require a fair amount of replacement.

· Cowl was intact as was the front bulkhead. (?)

· Running boards, fuel tank, and front and rear aprons were present as well as a variety of smaller panels. Both doors were present, and all looked decent and usable.

· I believethe top bows and sidescreen frames were present.

· Square taillamp style rear fenders but I did not see any of the light assemblies.

· Possibly other panels (trans tunnel?) , toe boards, etc?

Chrome and Trim

· The radiator and grille were present and were very good. There was one scratch/dent in the radiator grille but overall it looked quite good.

· NO headlights nor mounting brackets.

· Wood dashboard was there but fitted with early Triumph (TR3?) gauges. There was at least one of the large TD gauges (tach or speedo--possibly others) in one of the boxes of parts.

· There was a smaller diameter wood rim steering wheel –more modern than the car—present. Bumpers were present but were bent and rusted.

· There were no signs of seat frames or door panels or any other trim.
