 1956 Mercury Montclair Convertible

This is a 1956 Mercury Montclair Convertible that was owned by my late Father.  The vehicle was purchased and restored in approximately 1977.  The paint was redone again in the late 80's-early 90's.  The engine is the original 312 ci V-8 with an automatic transmission and 12v electrical.  To our knowledge the engine and transmission are original to the car.  My father was very passionate about keeping the car "all original".  This vehicle was never driven in snow, always garage kept and was taken off the road for the winters.  We have been to hundreds of car shows with my father over the years and have never seen another 56' Merc Convertible.  This is a relatively rare model, only 7,762 were produced in 1956!

The car has not been driven on the road for the past 3 years.  We had it looked over at a local garage this spring.  A new battery was put in (not the original style/type), new water pump, oil change, points, condenser and the ignition distributor wiring was redone.  The car starts and runs good.  Vehicle is not currently registered and has not been driven on the road in 3 years.  Overall, its in  good condition but does need work to make it a show car.

The body is solid and the paint is in decent glossy condition.  There is 1 spot on the front of the hood where the clear coat has peeled off (see picture).  Chrome and stainless is in good condition with a few dings on the side trim.  Front and rear bumpers were re-chromed in the 80's.  The only rust I can see is a small spot between the front fender and the front bumper under the drivers side headlight (see picture).  The under body and frame are all undercoated. Tires are period reproductions from Coker Tire, hold air and have good tread remaining.  Speedometer and odometer are not working, true mileage unknown.  Interior seats were re-upholstered in the 70's and are showing a fair amount of wear (see pictures).  The engine was rebuilt in the late 80's-early90's, to what extent I don't know.  Passenger side door window is cracked.  The medallion inside the trunk lock is loose.  Original ignition and trunk key.  Convertible top is in good condition with no rips.  Convertible extend/retract motors work.  Rear differential does have a slight leak.

This Mercury Cyclone is an American Muscle Car in Norway

Tue, Oct 27 2015

The picturesque Norwegian countryside certainly doesn't seem like the natural stomping grounds for a 1969 Mercury Cyclone, but owner Alexander Brevik makes the odd combo look like an ideal match. Even with the beautiful surroundings, Brevik sees no need to enjoy the scenery; he'd much rather just be driving this vintage muscle car. Take a ride with him in the latest clip from Petrolicious. Like many of us, Brevik's automotive obsession started at childhood, and today he has amassed a multitude of projects to wrench on. While he loves working on all of these cars, we all need a break sometimes, and that's what the Cyclone is for. Even when the rest of his collection isn't running, this orange beauty is always ready to go. Brevik may not pay much attention to the landscape, but Petrolicious makes the muscle car look fantastic in the Norwegian woods nonetheless. With its rumbling V8 engine and three-speed manual, this Cyclone turns out to be a perfect cruising companion in the Land of the Midnight Sun. And if you just can't get enough of classic muscle cars and the people who love them, check out our video coverage of the 2015 Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit down below. Related Video:

Junkyard Gem: 1996 Nissan Quest XE with 338,549 miles

Sun, Jul 9 2023

When I hit the junkyard, I always look for vehicles with impressive final figures showing on their odometers. I find so many Hondas and Toyotas with better than 300,000 miles that I don't consider them especially noteworthy (the exception being super-low-spec cheap models, such as a Tercel or Civic VX), and it goes without saying that the bar is quite high for Mercedes-Benzes as well. It has been surprisingly difficult to find discarded Nissans that made it past the 300k mark; today's Junkyard Gem is just the fourth I've documented. The highest-mile junked Nissan I'd found prior to today's minivan is a 1994 Maxima with 364,238 miles, followed by a 1987 Maxima with 341,176 miles and a 1986 200SX with 309,222 miles. Keep in mind that Nissan didn't go to six-digit odometers on most of its US-market cars until the early 1980s, and then went to tough-to-read-in-the-junkyard electronic odometers in the early 2000s; this means the pool of potential high-mile Nissans is limited to about the 1983-2000 range of model years. Ford has just as much right to claim credit to this van's impressive mile total as does Nissan, since the Quest was a collaboration between Ford and Nissan that also produced the Mercury Villager; this van was built by Ford at the Ohio Assembly plant. The Quest/Villager platform was derived from the Maxima's, and the engine is pure Nissan: a 3.0-liter VG30 V6 rated at 151 horsepower. The only transmission available in the first-generation (1993-1999) Quest/Villager was a four-speed automatic. This one appears to have been sold new at Landrum Nissan in Pueblo. The rear glass has been painted flat black, possibly to keep prying eyes from seeing valuable cargo. The rear seats are long gone, so this van probably hauled cargo for much of its long life. The front interior seems to be in good shape. Why is this van here? There's body damage on the left rear and right front, suggesting a crash that may have bent the suspension past the worth-fixing threshold. Perhaps the crinkled metal just made this van too unsightly, or maybe some powertrain problem was the culprit. This content is hosted by a third party. Ford recalls 300,000 Crown Vics over lighting module

Wed, Dec 23 2015

The Basics: Ford is recalling 312,814 units of the Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis sedans from the 2003-2005 model years. They were built at the St. Thomas Assembly Plant between Oct. 3, 2001, and Aug. 2, 2005. Ford says 296,004 of those units are located in the United States, with another 14,714 in Canada and 2,096 in Mexico. The Problem: The solder joints on the lighting control module could crack, depriving the headlamps of the power they need to light the way ahead. That could increase the risk of a crash, particularly at night and in other low-visibility situations. Injuries/Deaths: Ford reports that it is aware of 11 accidents that resulted from the problem, leading to one injury described as "minor." The Fix: The manufacturer is instructing dealers to replace the entire lighting control module. If You Own One: Make sure your headlights are working before getting under way. If they're not, avoid driving under low-light conditions, including at night, in heavy precipitation, or in fog.
