1971 COUGAR XR7 CONVERTIBLE -RARE--- AMERICAN ICON MUSCLE CAR --- this XR7 has beautiful body lines  and a factory designed low rake windshield that almost looks custom  , the side profile ,with the fat rear fenders  really give this car serious attitude!  and makes it look kind of like a 71 cuda  convertible ( to me anyway ).  the 1971  mercury cougar XR7  shared the same  performance engine and drive line with the 1971 mach 1 mustangs , in fact the convertible top and windshield , motor and drive train, and most of the interior, are interchangable with the 71 mustang mach 1 convertibles. only 1700  cougar XR7s were ever produced in 1971  and not many of those survived over the past 42 years. only a half dozen or so came new  with the factory metallic blue paint ,like this car did, somehow the avacado and mustard yellow  cars just dont have the same visual impact and appeal  as this car has with its beautiful metallic blue paint . this one  needs a little bit of cosmetic work here and there but is in really very nice condition overall  , .true xr7s came loaded with every option offered in 1971 , PS, PB, A/C ,P TOP , tilt wheel  , factory tinted glass,  appearance package and more , this car was restored 10 or12 years ago  and then put in storage  ever since . the restoration work was done professional and include a long list on new  parts (  the best of everthing ) .aside from minor body work and a new paint ( 10 yr old paint with minor scratches  that is ) sections of  the floor have been professional  replaced ( please see the attached pictures  ), the floor is  in like new condition inside and out with  N0 rust . the entire car is almost completely rust free. there is only a small amount of rust on the car is on the lower rear quarter in front of the rear wheel well ( see pictures its not bad but i need to mention it ),the rockers , doors, fenders, floors and trunk , and rest of the car are  vurtualy rust free. great glass and chrome and a nice interior still has the original 8 track player !  this car has a new fuel tank ,  new gas lines and new holly carb , the 351 cleveland 4bbl motor is completely rebuilt ,  super fast ,smooth running and sounds amazing, every thing on this motor is new,  new duel exhaust system ,new radiator ,power steering pump ,alternator , ect. , all new front and rear suspension including upper and lower controlling arms, ball joints tie ,rod ends , you name it , its new ,brand new  convertible top with glass rear window new top  cylinders  and  hoses, all new  rubber weather striping ,  brand new interior door panels( not yet installed ) , new carpeting ,and new tires . car only has 30.000 miles on the body and 500 or so miles on the new 351 C. this car was previously owned by a mercury executive  , thank you for looking i can help with shipping the car just about anywhere. feel free to ask any questions you might have.

Junkyard Gem: 2007 Mercury Mariner Hybrid

Sat, Dec 19 2020

Once hybrid vehicles from Honda and Toyota proved to work well in the real world of American streets during the early 2000s, other U.S.-market manufacturers climbed aboard the gasoline-electric bandwagon. Ford introduced the Escape Hybrid for the 2005 model year and sales proved quite strong; its Mercury-badged sibling, the Mariner Hybrid, appeared the following year. The Mariner Hybrid never induced many vehicle shoppers to sign on the line which is dotted, despite gasoline prices going absolutely ape in 2008, though it remained available all the way through the Mercury brand's 2010 demise. Here's one of those rare trucks, found in a Denver-area yard last month. The Escape/Mariner Hybrids got amazing fuel economy for tall, truck-shaped machines, though the serious penny-pinchers with long commutes skipped anything built in the 21st century and began driving up the prices of the once-scorned Geo Metro XFi, gas-sipping champion of the previous decade. The Mercury brand was on the ropes by this time, with not much to distinguish the once-distinctive Mercury machines from their near-identical Ford counterparts. The 1999-2002 Cougar was the last Mercury sold here with no twin brothers over in the Ford showrooms. I do see the occasional Escape Hybrid in places like this, though such gas-saving small SUVs tend to retain their value well enough that it takes a crash to retire one. This Mariner Hybrid hit something hard and either flipped on its side or scraped a guardrail for some distance. The airbags deployed and, presumably, spared the occupants from serious injury. That's the good news. The bad news is that fixing this kind of damage to a 13-year-old vehicle made by a defunct brand just isn't worth it to insurance companies, hybrid-electric powertrain or not. We can assume that the battery pack lives on in another Escape/Mariner. Navigation, Bluetooth, and other features that were considered pretty slick in 2007. This truck was in pretty good shape until the very end. Jill Wagner proved that you can bury a Mercury emblem in volcanic soil and it will grow into a brand-new Mariner Hybrid. That's how science works! You can go to the same field and tap on a Mercury emblem, if you want to get a regular gasoline Mariner. Has the Mercury Marauder gotten better with age?

Fri, Oct 23 2015

In the early 2000s Mercury desperately wanted to develop some edge for its brand – seemingly stuck between a quasi-premium, quasi-performance space in the Ford Universe. The Marauder is perhaps the most famous of the vehicles that resulted from those efforts, and is rapidly approaching Modern Classic status, today. Effectively a murdered out Grand Marquis with some updated trim pieces – what are company parts bins for, if not raiding? – the Marauder looked convincingly like a bad guy car. The 4.6-liter V8 under its hood that had been breathed on by engineers for a little more power, kicking out 302 horsepower and 318 pound-feet of torque from the factory. Not exactly Ferrari-baiting numbers, but it'd give your local cop's car a run for its money. Being a wild child of the last decade, of course our friends at MotorWeek had it on the program. What better way to test your mean-mugging muscle sedan than with John Davis' tanned and steady hands?

Translogic drives wood-burning Mercury Beaver XR-7

Sun, 31 Jul 2011

You read the title right, we're talking about the Mercury Beaver XR-7. No, Mercury never officially built a car called the beaver. This is the brainchild of upstate New Yorker Chip Beam, who owns and operates Beaver Energy, LLC. It runs on gases created by wood pellets fermented in a 2,400-degree furnace and fed to a supercharged Ford 4.6-liter V8.
By all accounts, it gets down the road just fine, and has pretty close to full power. The best part is, you can grow the fuel yourself and avoid patronizing big oil, if that's your thing. The only drawback that we can see to the Mercury Beaver XR-7 is the PVC pipe jungle occupying the space that would be the trunk under normal circumstances.
Still, if you're willing to smell like a mountain man and look like a bad Back to the Future knockoff, this ride is right up your alley. Click past the jump to see Translogic's take on this modified Merc.
