1969 Mercury Cougar XR7 Convertible, one of 4024 made. one of 219 in Medium Blue Metallic, original Blue Leather interior, 89k+ original miles. I have a big file of receipts for normal maintenance type stuff at shops around Nebraska, going back to the early 80's, showing a mileage progression to current, so I believe the mileage to be accurate. the original engine runs like you'd expect a well maintained 89k mile Ford V8 to run. Currently shows 89,470. Also comes with the original owner's manual, a 69 Mercury full line brochure & Cougar spec book.

In the last 5 years, it's had the original carb rebuilt, timing chain & water pump replaced. left valve cover gasket, new radiator & hoses. A/C Converted to R134, the clutch engages & runs but ac doesn't blow cold. Car spends a lot of time sitting so likely has a leak somewhere. Transmission front pump seal is starting to leak but shifts perfect otherwise. The fuel gauge & clock don't work, tires have about 500 miles on them. Cruise control does work-never seen one of these with cruise. The AM/FM stereo & 8-track work. Dash pad is in perfect condition, All the power windows work, the right rear one is missing the chrome switch face, but still works. the left rear window, the rollers are loose at the glass, where they ride on the regulator track. Goes up fine if you help it, but tries to bind sometimes otherwise. The master window switch, the master lock out switch that disables the other windows-is missing. Both those switches are available reproduction elsewhere on Ebay for about $45ea.

The guy I got the car from, was an instructor at an Automotive technical school in the area & he put on; a new flowmaster exhaust, replaced all the wheel bearings, calipers, rotors, M/C, brake hard lines and hoses, wheel cylinders, rotors, drums, the rear axle seals have been replaced. new check valves for the headlamp vacuum operated system, which-still leaks down a few minutes after the engine is shut off, like they all do, but they work perfectly otherwise & are aligned as original. It always amazes me to see these 69/70 Cougars that get rotisserie restored-and the headlamps/grills are aligned like crap. The car was repainted at some point in it's past, I think a bit darker than original. Ahead of the trunk lid the paints flaked off as well as a spot on the LF fender. The quarters where replaced at the time but are starting to bubble up in some spots. The trunk & rockerboxes/spring perches are in decent shape, the floor in the front footwells, someone put some sheet metal over the original rusted floor pan, under the original carpet, which is faded in spots. The convertible top is enough to keep the wind & sun off, doesn't have any major tears, but should ultimately be replaced. the rear glass hinge-the plastic strip between the top & bottom sections of glass where it folds is completely separated. The top mechanism works perfectly, has no rust & doesn't have any unusual play in the pivots. The rear bumper has a ding in it, I have an extra that comes with the car.

This car could really sparkle, fully restored or you can enjoy turning heads every where you go in it, just as I've done-still plenty of time this season to cruise it before winter! This car was optioned out to be the perfect summer cruiser & I think, the perfect color combination.

Remember, your bid is a legal, binding contract. A non paying winning bidder has a very strong chance of being tracked down, tarred, feathered, publicly shamed etc. Buyer responsible for transportation & pickup-in a "reasonable amount of time." I really need to reclaim some garage space for other projects. I can coordinate with your shipper as needed.

***THIS IS A NO RESERVE AUCTION, WINNING BIDDER TAKES IT HOME!!!***

Translogic drives wood-burning Mercury Beaver XR-7

Sun, 31 Jul 2011

You read the title right, we're talking about the Mercury Beaver XR-7. No, Mercury never officially built a car called the beaver. This is the brainchild of upstate New Yorker Chip Beam, who owns and operates Beaver Energy, LLC. It runs on gases created by wood pellets fermented in a 2,400-degree furnace and fed to a supercharged Ford 4.6-liter V8.
By all accounts, it gets down the road just fine, and has pretty close to full power. The best part is, you can grow the fuel yourself and avoid patronizing big oil, if that's your thing. The only drawback that we can see to the Mercury Beaver XR-7 is the PVC pipe jungle occupying the space that would be the trunk under normal circumstances.
Still, if you're willing to smell like a mountain man and look like a bad Back to the Future knockoff, this ride is right up your alley. Click past the jump to see Translogic's take on this modified Merc.

Junkyard Gem: 1971 Mercury Comet 2-Door Sedan

Sat, Sep 10 2022

When Ford introduced the original Maverick for the 1970 model year, Dearborn tradition required that a Mercury-badged version be created. That car ended up being the Comet, built from the 1971 through 1977 model years. Here's one of those first-year Comets in rough but recognizable condition, found in a Denver self-service yard not long ago. The Comet name had spent the 1960s affixed to the flanks of Mercurized Ford Falcons (1960-1965) and Fairlanes (1966-1969). Since the Maverick was the successor of the Falcon — sales of which went into an irrecoverable downward spiral once its sportier Mustang first cousin hit the streets — it made sense to move the Comet name over to the Mercury version. Nearly every American Mercury model ever sold was a U.S.-market Ford model with a different name and some gingerbread slapped on. Notable exceptions to this tradition include the 1999-2002 Mercury Cougar (mechanically based on the Contour but with a unique body) and the 1991-1994 Mercury Capri (an Australian-built mashup of Mazda components borrowed from the Ford Laser). The Comet was by far the cheapest Mercury model available in 1971, though it was considered more prestigious than its Maverick counterpart. The price tag on the '71 Comet two-door sedan started at $2,217 (about $16,505 in 2022 dollars), while the '71 Maverick two-door sedan cost $2,175 ($16,193 today). Meanwhile, AMC would sell you a new Hornet two-door sedan for one dollar less than a Maverick, Chevrolet had the Nova coupe for a dollar more than the Maverick, and Plymouth offered the Valiant Duster for $2,313 ($17,220 now). Toyota had a Maverick competitor as well that year, with the Corona at $2,150 for the sedan and $2,310 for the coupe. Having driven every one of the aforementioned models, I'd take the Duster if I went back in time and had to choose one (as a 1969 Corona owner, I'm not a fan of the 1971 facelift, though the Corona's build quality beats the Duster's). The build sticker on this car tells us that it was built at the Kansas City Assembly Plant (where Transits and F-150s are made today) and sold through the Los Angeles district sales office (there was a DSO in Denver, so it's a near-certainty that this car didn't start out in Colorado). The paint started out as Bright Blue Metallic (it's neither bright nor metallic 51 years down the road) and the interior was done up in Medium Blue Cloth & Vinyl.

More than 800,000 Fords recalled for faulty Takata airbags

Thu, Jan 12 2017

The Basics: Ford is recalling about 816,000 Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles built in the US for faulty passenger-side Takata airbags. The affected vehicles were all built in North America, with 654,695 recalled vehicles in the US and 161,174 vehicles in Canada. A wide variety of cars, trucks, and SUVs are affected. This is a planned expansion of an earlier recall. 2005-09 and 2012 Ford Mustang 2005-06 Ford GT 2006-09 and 2012 Ford Fusion 2007-09 Ford Ranger 2007-09 Ford Edge 2006-09 and 2012 Lincoln Zephyr and Lincoln MKZ 2007-09 Lincoln MKX 2006-09 Mercury Milan The Problem: Like every other Takata recall, the problem rests with faulty airbags that can potentially expel shrapnel, injuring or killing vehicle occupants. Millions of vehicles from dozens of automakers are affected, so don't think that Ford is alone on this one. Injuries/Deaths: Ford stated in a press release that there have been no injuries or death linked to the vehicles in this recall. All in all, 11 deaths and 180 injuries across a variety of automakers have been linked to these Takata airbags. The fix: Ford will contact owners soon, and the affected vehicles will have their airbags replaced by a dealer at no additional charge. If you own one: Wait for contact from Ford, then head to the dealer to get a replacement. If you're wondering if your vehicle is affected, go to this Ford website and enter their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The recall reference number is 17S01.
