1969 MERCURY COUGAR ELIMINATOR. BEFORE I GIVE THE DETAILS THIS IS NOT A NUMBERS MATCHING CAR NOR DID THIS CAR COME FROM THE FACTORY WITH THIS ENGINE. IT ORGINIALLY CAME WITH A 351 AND FMX TRANSMISSION. NOW FOR THE DETAILS, HAS FRESHLY REBUILT 428 ENGINE FROM A LOCAL MACHINE SHOP WITH ANEW ELEBROCK CARB, HOOKER HEADERS, EARLY 1970'S ALUMUNIUM ELEBROCK STREET PERFORMER 890 MANIFOLD. NEW STARTER,REGULATOR, BATTERY, REBUILT RADIATOR. FROM THE EARLY 1970'S A OVAL COUGAR AIR CLEANER ( NOT A REPRO ). AUTO C-6 TRANSMISSION, NEW DRIVELINE, NEW FRONT COIL SPRINGS, NEW FRONT DISC ROTORS AND BEARINGS. WHEELS ARE FROM THE LATE 1960'S  EARLY 1970'S BUT ARE NOT ORGINIAL TO CAR. HAS BIAS PLY TIRES. RECHROMED FRONT AND REAR BUMPERS, TAILIGHT HOUSINGS AND ALL TRIM EXCEPT FOR FRONT AND BACK WINDOW TRIM. WINDOWS ARE ORGINIAL WITH SOME SCRATCHES, BUT NOT BAD. NEW DOOR HANDLES AND ROCKER TRIM. NEW BRAKE LINES AND FUEL LINES, NEW FUEL TANK. INTERIOR HAS NEW UPHOLSTERED FRONT SEATS, REAR SEATS, DOOR PANELS AND QUARTER PANELS WERE DYED BLACK. WAS ORGINIALLY BLUE. NEW CARPET PACKAGE TRAY AND SAIL PANELS. ALL GAUGES WORK. NEW EXHAUST FROM ENGINE BACK. THE PAINT IS IN GREAT CONDITION WITH A FEW CHIPS AND SCRATCHES. I HAVE A KEVIN MARTI REPORT AND BUILD SHEET ALSO. YOU MAY NOTICE THAT IT DOSEN'T HAVE A CLOCK ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. THAT PANEL HAD SURFACE RUST SO BAD THAT I COULDN'T SAVE SO I REPLACED WITH A STANDARD PANEL AND HAD IT COVERED. AND YOU MAY ASK ABOUT THE SIDE STRIPES, I MADE IT TO MY LIKEING AND DID NOT PUT THE STRIPES DOWN THE SIDE AND PUT THE ELIMINATOR AND 428 ON THE FENDERS.

HISTORY OF THE CAR GOES LIKE THIS:

BOUGHT CAR ON EBAY, TAKING THE OWNERS WORD FOR IT AS A RUST FREE CAR. WHEN IT ARRIVED I INSPECTED IT THE FLOORPAN WAS COMPLETELY GONE, ALL ENGINE APRONS RUSTED, FRONT PASSINGER DOOR RUSTED ON BOTTOM,  FRONT FENDERS NEEDED REPAIR AND REAR QUARTERS NEEDED ATTENTION.

HAD A PROFESSIONAL BODY SHOP REPLACE AND FIX ALL THE RUST.

I HAD A 1 PEICE FLOORPAN INSTALLED, FOUND 2 1969 FRONT FENDERS TO USE AND FIXED THE REAR QUARTERS, LOCATED A 1969 PASS.DOOR AND INSTALLED, REPLACED ALL ENGINE APRONS.

AS ALOT OF YOU KNOW WHEN RESTORING THESE KINDS OF CARS YOU CAN QUICKLY GET MORE MONEY INTO IT THAN IT IS WORTH.

SO, TO STOP THE BLEEDING THERE ARE STILL A FEW THINGS THAT THE NEW OWNER WILL NEED TO ADDRESS:

THE DRIVER DOOR MIRROR WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THE CABLES ARE BROKEN

THE RIM STYLE STEERING WHEEL HORN WILL NEED TO BE FIXED

THE BACKUP LIGHTS AREN'T WORKING

AND THE RADIO IS THERE BUT DOESN'T WORK.

I HAVE PUT ON A FAIR RESERVE,  BUT I'M WILLING TO TAKE A 1967/8 MUSTANG FASTBACK ON TRADE. PLEASE NO RUST BUCKETS.

AS WITH MOST SALES AS IS WHERE IS.

IF YOU WANT ANY PICTURES OF A CERTAIN SPOT OR SIDE LET ME KNOW AND I'LL TRY TO GET THEM TO YOU.

THANKS

Junkyard Gem: 1993 Mercury Topaz GS Sedan

Sat, Aug 13 2022

As long as the Mercury brand existed — a period spanning the 1939 through 2011 model years — nearly every Mercury sold in the United States was more or less a redecorated Ford model. The Torino had its Montego sibling, the Crown Victoria had the Grand Marquis, the Cougar was based on everything from the Mustang to the Mondeo, and so on. Naturally, when the folks in Dearborn developed the Ford Tempo compact, a Mercury version had to be created. This was the Topaz, with the official launch of both cars taking place on the deck of the aircraft carrier often referred to as the USS Decrepit. You can't make this stuff up! The Tempo/Topaz, also known as the Tempaz, has largely faded from our collective automotive memory by now, since it broke no significant new engineering or styling ground (this story would be much different if Ford had only put the amazing straight-eight "T-Drive" Tempaz powertrain into production) and didn't have any endearing features other than being a cheap domestic competitor to the Toyota Corolla and Nissan Sentra. Still, close to 3 million Tempazes left North American Ford and Lincoln-Mercury showrooms during the 1984-1994 period. As you'd expect, most of these disposable cars disappeared from both the street and the car graveyard long ago. It takes a very special Tempaz for me to break out my camera while I'm patrolling my local wrecking yards; generally, this means an ultra-rare all-wheel-drive version or at least a very early model in super-clean condition. Today's Junkyard Gem is neither, but I took one look at this spectacular Bordello Red crypto-velour-and-slippery-plastic interior and recognized that this was no ordinary junkyard Mercury. It appears that Mercury had dropped the idea of clever names for base-grade seat fabrics by the time of the Topaz, referring to this stuff as just "cloth" in all the brochures I could find. That's too bad, because Mercurys had cool names for upholstery (e.g., Chromatex) in the old days. The interior is in very good condition but the steering wheel shows substantial wear, so I think this is a high-mile Topaz that got meticulous care from its owner or owners. Ford used five-digit odometers on these cars until the end of production, however, so we'll never know if this reading indicates 65,404 miles or 365,404 miles. The body is very straight, but there's some nasty corrosion behind the right front wheelwell.

Junkyard Gem: 2007 Mercury Mariner Hybrid

Sat, Dec 19 2020

Once hybrid vehicles from Honda and Toyota proved to work well in the real world of American streets during the early 2000s, other U.S.-market manufacturers climbed aboard the gasoline-electric bandwagon. Ford introduced the Escape Hybrid for the 2005 model year and sales proved quite strong; its Mercury-badged sibling, the Mariner Hybrid, appeared the following year. The Mariner Hybrid never induced many vehicle shoppers to sign on the line which is dotted, despite gasoline prices going absolutely ape in 2008, though it remained available all the way through the Mercury brand's 2010 demise. Here's one of those rare trucks, found in a Denver-area yard last month. The Escape/Mariner Hybrids got amazing fuel economy for tall, truck-shaped machines, though the serious penny-pinchers with long commutes skipped anything built in the 21st century and began driving up the prices of the once-scorned Geo Metro XFi, gas-sipping champion of the previous decade. The Mercury brand was on the ropes by this time, with not much to distinguish the once-distinctive Mercury machines from their near-identical Ford counterparts. The 1999-2002 Cougar was the last Mercury sold here with no twin brothers over in the Ford showrooms. I do see the occasional Escape Hybrid in places like this, though such gas-saving small SUVs tend to retain their value well enough that it takes a crash to retire one. This Mariner Hybrid hit something hard and either flipped on its side or scraped a guardrail for some distance. The airbags deployed and, presumably, spared the occupants from serious injury. That's the good news. The bad news is that fixing this kind of damage to a 13-year-old vehicle made by a defunct brand just isn't worth it to insurance companies, hybrid-electric powertrain or not. We can assume that the battery pack lives on in another Escape/Mariner. Navigation, Bluetooth, and other features that were considered pretty slick in 2007. This truck was in pretty good shape until the very end. Jill Wagner proved that you can bury a Mercury emblem in volcanic soil and it will grow into a brand-new Mariner Hybrid. That's how science works! You can go to the same field and tap on a Mercury emblem, if you want to get a regular gasoline Mariner. Ford finds flex-fuel engine design plays big role in emissions output

Mon, Jan 6 2014

How bad is ethanol for your engine? There's been a lot of debate on this issue as the US considers upping the biofuel content in the national gasoline supply from 10 percent (E10) to 15 percent (E15). The ethanol industry and some scientists say higher ethanol blends show no "meaningful differences" in new engines while the oil industry says ethanol creates health risks. Researchers working at the Ford Research and Innovation Center decided to take a closer look at how a wide range of gas-ethanol blends - E0, E10, E20, E30, E40, E55 and E80 - affected the emissions coming out of a flex-fuel 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis. To see the full report, printed in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, requires payment, but there is an abstract and Green Car Congress has some more details. The gist is that, "with increasing ethanol content in the fuel, the tailpipe emissions of ethanol, acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, methane, and ammonia increased." At least NOx and NMHC emissions decreased. The researchers say that the effects are due to the fuel and "are expected for all FFVs," but that the way that a manufacturer calibrates the engine will affect NOx, THC, and NMOG emissions. It's this last bit that's important, since the researchers found, "Higher ethanol content in gasoline affects several fundamental fuel properties that can impact emissions. ... These changes can have positive or negative effects that can depend on engine design, hardware, and control strategy. In addition to direct emissions impacts, higher ethanol content fuel can also provide more efficient combustion and overall engine operation under part-load conditions and under knock-limited higher-load conditions." So, as we head towards more ethanol in our fuel supply (maybe), manufacturers are going to need to learn how to burn it most efficiently.
