This car has been in our family since the late 70's.  Was purchased by my uncle in 1979 and was refurbished in 1980.  When purchased in 1979, the odometer read 18k...now it's 35k.  The assumption has always been that the odometer has rolled once.  I spoke to my uncle just today and he said the original color was a slightly darker blue than the pale blue it is now.

First owner was a Navy man who sold it in 1964 to the guy my uncle bought it from in Hawthorn Woods IL. After my Uncle, my Dad owned it for a few years and then gave it to me as a college graduation gift.  Which I subsequently sold it to my college roommate to pay off college debts in the early 90's.  I bought it back in 2006 and between kids baseball/softball, golf and a boat, the Comet just doesn't get enough love anymore.  It has spent most of the last 30+ years in storage, except for trips uptown to the local car shows or to the post office.    Maybe a trip to the golf course when it's lucky.

It's a great car with cool 1960's lines that turns heads wherever it goes.  The 260 V8 was rebuilt in 2004 and has maybe 2000 miles on it, but sadly, a life of storage in the midwest hasn't exactly been kind to the floors.  She's got some rust that needs attention but is ready for a little TLC and a new home.   Mercury made lots of Comets in 1963...but a relative handful of convertible S22's, and even fewer with a 4 speed & V8.

Feel free to contact me to discuss it's history and current condition.  I'm happy to answer any and all questions.

Thanks for looking!

Curtain officially comes down on Mercury as dealers remove signage

Mon, 03 Jan 2011

The process of shutting down the Mercury is complete. Ford officially made the decision to close its mid-level brand in June of 2010. In the months that followed, Ford offered its dealers money to stop selling the cars, with production shutting down in September. The last Mercury, a Mariner, rolled off the assembly line in the beginning of October and former spokesperson Jill Wagner said her good-byes to both the car and her job. Now the last piece of the brand has come down as dealers are removing any and all Mercury signage from their lots.

Translogic drives wood-burning Mercury Beaver XR-7

Sun, 31 Jul 2011

You read the title right, we're talking about the Mercury Beaver XR-7. No, Mercury never officially built a car called the beaver. This is the brainchild of upstate New Yorker Chip Beam, who owns and operates Beaver Energy, LLC. It runs on gases created by wood pellets fermented in a 2,400-degree furnace and fed to a supercharged Ford 4.6-liter V8.
By all accounts, it gets down the road just fine, and has pretty close to full power. The best part is, you can grow the fuel yourself and avoid patronizing big oil, if that's your thing. The only drawback that we can see to the Mercury Beaver XR-7 is the PVC pipe jungle occupying the space that would be the trunk under normal circumstances.
Still, if you're willing to smell like a mountain man and look like a bad Back to the Future knockoff, this ride is right up your alley. Click past the jump to see Translogic's take on this modified Merc.

NHTSA probing 2000-2003 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable models over throttle issue

Mon, 29 Oct 2012

A potential issue with the speed control cable collar has got the 2003-20003 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable under the spotlight of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. If the collar breaks it can cause the throttle to be stuck open.
The issue is limited to vehicles with the 3.0-liter V6 Duratec. There are just 50 complaints so far out of 310,000 cars, but the NHTSA has begun an investigation into whether a recall should be issued.
