I am selling my beautiful 1963 Mercury Comet Convertible (S-22 trim package). 86,969 original miles on this down south car.
No rust and good solid and straight car. No dents and it has all of its chrome! The paint is a B and the interior has been restored and is a B+. The engine is the original 260 V8 and it has a two speed merc-o-matic automatic transmission. The engine runs great once warmed up for 30 seconds and has never let me down.

The car was restored about 10 years ago and I have a small packet with receipts and pictures from the restoration. The top is red and was also replaced and it is like new. It also has a retro sound head unit with bluetooth and new speaker system.

I replaced the plugs, wires, distributor, points and coil. I also replaced the water pump, radiator, thermostat.   Rebuilt the power steering box, had the strut arm bushings replaced and most of the steering components were warn so those were replaced as well. I had it lowered 2" and had the alignment professionally done and it drives true and smooth. I had the brakes checked last month and they are in great shape. Last year I had new Coker tires and steel rims installed for a updated look. I also have the original tires, rims and hubcaps as well.  Tires have 2,000 miles on them.

I bought the car from a nice old farmer in Bowling Green Kentucky. I am sad to sell the car but I just got married and we need to save up money for a new house. I would put this up against any Comet in this RARE year. Overall a great car and tons of fun. It will also get you into back to the 50's car shows!

Things that need attention:
The rear tail lights have some pitting on the chrome.  They are available online for replacement or have them re-chromed.
Small scuff on the right side top of bumper. 1/2" x 2" (see picture)
Door locks don't work.  I don't ever lock this car because its more expensive to replace glass or top.
Speedometer cable is kinked and speedometer bounces around.   New cables are an easy fix.

PayPal Deposit of $500 is due 24hrs after auction.  Cashiers check must be sent within 7 days of auction ending.  I don't have a shipping company but I'm ok if you hire one to pick it up.  I would recommend a closed trailer so no scratches happen on transport.

Please email with any questions if your a serious buyer.

Ford recalls Five Hundred, Mercury Montego sedans over fuel tank woes

Mon, 18 Jul 2011

Ford has announced through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it is recalling nearly 3,000 examples of its Five Hundred and Mercury Montego (pictured) sedans from the 2007 model year.
The action, which affects 2,945 vehicles, is due to potentially defective welds between the filler neck and the fuel tank, a condition that could result in a fuel leak or the smell of gasoline reaching the occupants. In the worst-case scenario, a leak could cause a fire. Cars with the affected fuel tank problem could see an illuminated dashboard warning light as a result of the evaporative emissions leak being detected.
Ford will inspect and replace the fuel tank at no cost to owners (those who have already had the procedure done at-cost can apply for reimbursement), and the Dearborn automaker will begin notifying Five Hundred and Montego owners beginning August 15. Check out the official NHTSA press release after the jump for further details.

Jill Wagner retired as Mercury spokeswoman

Wed, 17 Nov 2010

Jill Wagner has officially given up her crown as the queen of Mercury. With the Ford middle child on its way to the scrap heap, Wagner no longer has any automotive hardware to promote. Given her varied talents, we wouldn't be surprised to see her pick up where she left off with another automaker.
And here you thought you'd never be upset about Mercury's passing.
Thanks for the tip, Gregg!

Junkyard Gem: 1973 Mercury Montego MX Brougham Sawzall Convertible Edition

Fri, Apr 21 2017

You know how it goes— the weather is warm, you want to do some top-down driving, and you lack a proper convertible... but you do have a hooptie Detroit car on one side of the garage and a big ol' Sawzall on the other. Put the two together and you have a Sawzall Convertible, which generally lasts for about one summer before it gets scrapped. Here's a fine example of such a car, photographed in a San Francisco Bay Area self-service junkyard. Most Sawzall Convertibles (yes, it should be called a roadster, but nobody does that) have raw, ragged metal edges, or maybe duct tape over the stumps of the amputated pillars, but someone went to the trouble to weld nice smooth metal covers over the hackage on this one. The windshield is gone. Instead, the windshield frame is ringed by tongue depressors held in place by gooey roofing tar. No, we don't know why. The Montego MX Brougham was a hot-selling personal luxury coupe in its day, selling for $3,041 in 1973. That's just under $17,000 in 2017 dollars. It must have been fun, cruising this thing on Bay Area streets with no roof and a rattle-can spray-bomb job. This one has the optional 400-cubic-inch V8 engine, rated at 171 horsepower. What would this car's original buyer have thought of its fate? This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings.
