1962 Mercury Comet 30mpg No Rust Low Reserve 2.3 Ranger Engine Swap Like Falcon on 2040-cars

Offered for sale is my 1962 Mercury Comet. LOW RESERVE! My Comet is an excellent driver quality vintage car with modern mechanical components. 90+ high quality pictures of the Comet are available by clicking the link below This extremely unique little car has an upgraded 2.3L 4 cylinder engine and a 5 speed manual transmission from a 1993 Ford Ranger. This engine swap combined with the front disc brake conversion kit and open 3.00 8" rear end from a Ford Maverick make this car an extremely reliable, quick and dependable cruiser. I've been averaging around 30MPG on the highway which is pretty unheard of for a 52 year old car that can comfortably drive at 80MPH all day. Seriously this car is one of the most reliable vehicles--vintage or modern--that I have ever owned. Turn the ignition, hit the start button (pictured to the right of the ignition switch) and the car immediately comes to life. The Comet has a Hooker header and a 2 inch exhaust. The exhaust is not loud & obnoxious nor does it drone on the highway. It does have a nice subtle burble to it. The Comet drives fantastically. Due to its light weight the 2.3L is plenty of power--especially with the 5 speed--to make this car quite fun to drive and definitely faster than you would think. Thanks to the Scarebird disc brake conversion it also stops like a much more modern car. Additionally the Comet has recent KYB shocks all around and about 8,000 miles on a brand new set of tires. Once you are in motion the car drives nice and straight without any vibration. I've been driving it at least once a week on my 130 mile a day commute ever since the roads have been salt-free. I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to hop in it for a longer trip. The swap was done around 8,000 miles ago. The previous owner spent a lot of time cleaning up the wiring harness and making it work well for this car and he did a great job. It has an electric fan and two speed intermittent wipers from a Ford F-150 which work awesome. The Heater (including the blower motor) is hooked up, and works great. The in dash lighter has been adapted to work as a horn. This is not a hacked together slapped in engine swap, it's been thought out and refined through a couple owners. The body of the Comet is very nice and rust-free. This is an extremely extremely solid car, it came up to MA from down south two owners ago and since it has been up here it has been stored every winter protected from road salt. As you can see the flat black is aging but it's nothing a paint-job or re application of flat black couldn't fix. Honestly I kind of like it the way it is. Inside the Comet has Autometer gauges, 65 Mustang bucket seats and three point seat belts. I will include a very nice pair of black 65 Mustang bucket seats I never had the time to swap in with the sale. The rear seat was removed before I owned it and I do not have it. In the interest of full disclosure I should point out that the gas gauge doesn't work but I use the trip odometer to keep track of mileage between fill-ups which works great.
All in all this is a super unique car that you could easily drive as-is or put a little cosmetic work into to your taste and step it up a notch. I've tried to illustrate in detail what a nice little car this Comet is. It kills me to sell it, but I have way too many old cars and I've got to sell something. I have priced this car extremely reasonably and I have no doubt it will sell. It would be nearly impossible to find another vintage car this unique, reliable and fuel efficient for my reserve price. See over 90 pictures of the Comet by clicking on the following link: http://s158.photobucket.com/user/mrpinkeyes34/library/62%20Comet?page=1 Please ask any and all questions before bidding. I want whoever buys this car to be happy with it, I have sold several cars on Ebay and the buyers have always been thrilled with their cars. Keep in mind that this is an older modified car that is far from perfect and not a 3 year old Accord. Please examine pictures carefully, they tell the entire story of this car. Please only bid on my Comet if you are serious, it's hard enough to sell this car without adding the element of someone jerking me around about it. I encourage you to come take a look at the car in Brewster, Ma 02631. Car will be transferred with a clear MA title that is in my name. Because of its age the Comet will be sold AS-IS. Thanks for your interest. This Comet has a low reserve so bid to win! |

Junkyard Gem: 1972 Mercury Cougar XR-7
Sun, Feb 12 2023Starting with the 1939 model year and continuing through 2011, the rule in Dearborn was that most Ford models would get a dressed-up sibling wearing Mercury badges (and Canadians even got Mercury F-100s and Econolines). When the Mustang first hit showrooms in 1964, the countdown for a Mercurized version began. That car, the Cougar, debuted as a 1967 model marketed as "the man's car." Today's Junkyard Gem is a much-abused example of the early-1970s Cougar, found in a San Francisco Bay Area car graveyard a while back. Just as the Mustang packed on weight and price as the 1960s became the 1970s, the even more heavily gingerbreaded Cougar did the same. For 1971 through 1973, the Cougar was still based on the Mustang chassis but weighed several hundred additional pounds and was more than seven inches longer. The curb weight for this car was 3,298 pounds, versus 2,941 pounds for the lightest '72 Mustang coupe. Yes, there's a Mustang underneath all that chrome! When the Mustang went to a modified Pinto chassis starting in the 1974 model year, the Cougar moved over to the midsize Torino platform and stayed there until it rejoined the Mustang on the Fox platform for 1980 (though the honor of being the Mustang's near-twin went to the Mercury Capri at that point). For 1989, the Cougar became an MN12 Thunderbird sibling, where it remained through its 30th anniversary … and then the Cougar got the axe. The Cougar story wasn't done at that point, however, because the name got revived in 1999 with a Mondeo-based version that lasted through 2002 and bears the distinction of being one of the few Mercury models with no corresponding Ford-badged counterpart. Along the way, there were Cougar sedans and even station wagons, with the curb weight of the heaviest-ever Cougar bloating to well over two tons (the winner of that honor is the 1977 Cougar Villager wagon, scaling in at an astounding 4,482 pounds). In 1972, though, all new Cougars were coupes or convertibles, and all of them came with factory V8 power. The build tag on this one tells us that it was assembled at the River Rouge compound in Dearborn and sold via the Kansas City sales office. That tells us that someone drove this car to California after buying it in the Midwest; Ford also built 1972 Cougars in San Jose, so California Mercury shoppers would have bought locally-produced ones. It's a top-end XR-7 in Medium Bright Yellow paint, with the interior in Medium Ginger.
Ford Recalling 70k Escape and Mariner Hybrids for cooling issue
Fri, 12 Sep 2014Ford is recalling about 70,209 examples of the 2005-2008 Ford Escape Hybrid and the 2006-2008 Mercury Mariner Hybrid because the cooling pumps for their hybrid systems could fail.
According to the company's defect notice, it's possible for the original "Motor Electronics Coolant (MEC) Pump" to wear out and fail, which would could cause the hybrid system to overheat. If this happens, the vehicle goes into a safety mode that takes away most or all of its power. However, braking and steering still operate normally. After cooling down, the affected models restart normally. The company says that it's not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this problem.
Ford will begin repairing the vehicles in late October, and dealers will be installing improved, brushless pumps on the affected models at no charge to owners. If drivers had their pumps fail before this recall, they can contact Ford for a possible reimbursement. Scroll down to read the recall announcement from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or download the full defect notice as a PDF, here.
Has the Mercury Marauder gotten better with age?
Fri, Oct 23 2015In the early 2000s Mercury desperately wanted to develop some edge for its brand – seemingly stuck between a quasi-premium, quasi-performance space in the Ford Universe. The Marauder is perhaps the most famous of the vehicles that resulted from those efforts, and is rapidly approaching Modern Classic status, today. Effectively a murdered out Grand Marquis with some updated trim pieces – what are company parts bins for, if not raiding? – the Marauder looked convincingly like a bad guy car. The 4.6-liter V8 under its hood that had been breathed on by engineers for a little more power, kicking out 302 horsepower and 318 pound-feet of torque from the factory. Not exactly Ferrari-baiting numbers, but it'd give your local cop's car a run for its money. Being a wild child of the last decade, of course our friends at MotorWeek had it on the program. What better way to test your mean-mugging muscle sedan than with John Davis' tanned and steady hands?
