For sale is a 1974 Mercury/Ford Capri.  The car is all original and complete.  It runs and drives, but please see the details below.

Exterior -  The exterior is in fairly decent shape.  The paint is original, and still in great condition.  The body is straight, but has its dings here and there. All doors close and open great and are not out of alignment.  The only issues with the body are as expected,   with a bit of rust in the trunk wheel wells, but nothing major and these are the only two areas with rust on the car.   The front driver fender also had a bit of body work on the corner near the headlight.  This area has been resprayed, and should be redone.  Other than these couple of things, the exterior is in surprisingly in good condition considering the year.

Interior - The interior of the car is all there.  The dash has a few cracks and the seats will need reupholstering.  The back parcel panel is aftermarket and currently not installed.  The headliner and sun visors are in good condition.  Seats slide and recline with no problems.  The dashboard has all the buttons and switches in place and in working condition.  All gauges illuminate and work fine.  Overall, I would say the interior is a 7/10.

Mechanics - The engine is a 2.8 V6 with an automatic transmission.  I am unsure of the mileage, but the engine still runs strong and the trans shifts smoothly.  Though the car runs and drives, it may need a carburetor rebuild for it to run smoothly.  It will start on the first try, but will take a bit to hold an idle.  The car leaks a bit of oil given that this is the original engine and trans.  The engine bay is a bit dirty, but its nothing some degreaser cant take care of.  I have recently replaced all of the spark plugs, wires,  filters, oil, coolant, and transmission fluid.  I have also done a full brake fluid drain to clean out the system.  Tires all have about 75% thread as well.  Overall, the mechanics are good, but will need to be dialed-in in order to make it reliable.

Car Details -  I bought the car a few months ago from a wrecking yard.  Though the car has never been involved in an accident, it has been given a salvaged title because it was pulled from a wrecking yard. Very sad, considering the car is in great shape.   In order to register the car, the buyer will need to have a brake & light inspection done by a certified shop.  I have already set up the car for this, so it should not be difficult getting it done.

The car is ready to go for anyone wanting a good Capri.  The car will not need much to get it fully registered and on the road.  Capris are getting harder and harder to find, so happy bidding!

Thanks

Junkyard Gem: 1973 Mercury Marquis Brougham 4-Door Pillared Hardtop

Tue, Nov 7 2023

Ford's Mercury Division debuted the Marquis in the 1967 model year, as a sporty coupe based on a stretched Ford LTD chassis. When the LTD got an update for 1969, so did the Marquis, and production of that generation of the top-of-the-line Mercury continued through 1978 (the Grand Marquis hit streets the following year). The 1969-1978 Marquis was a big, imposing land yacht, and the Brougham version came absolutely loaded with affordable luxury. Today's Junkyard Gem is a Marquis Brougham from the first year of the Malaise Era, found in a Phoenix self-service car graveyard recently. This car appears to have spent decades sitting outdoors in one of the harshest climates in the country, and so it's in rough shape. The vinyl top received the full thermonuclear treatment and is mostly obliterated by now. The interior got thoroughly cooked as well. Still, its original opulence shines through if you use some imagination. What hurts is that this car was packed with most of the good options, including the mighty 460-cubic-inch (7.5-liter) V8 engine with four-barrel carburetor. The price for the 460 was just $76 in this car, or around $548 in today's money. The base engine was a 429 (7.0-liter). Power numbers were way down for 1973 when compared to a couple of years earlier, partly as the result of tightening emissions standards but mostly due to the switch from gross to net power ratings that began midway during 1971 and was completed by the end of 1972. This engine was rated at 202 horsepower and 330 pound-feet. The only transmission available was a three-speed automatic. We can assume that the original buyer of this car and its single-digit fuel economy had a rough time when the OPEC oil embargo hit in the fall of 1973. Believe it or not, air conditioning was not standard equipment on the '73 Marquis Brougham (you had to move up to a Lincoln for that). This one even has the automatic temperature control feature, adding a total of $508 to the cost of this car (about $3,661 in 2023 dollars). That AM/FM/8-track radio—or, in fact, any radio—was an extra-cost option as well, with a price tag of $363 ($2,616 after inflation). The MSRP for the 1973 Marquis Brougham sedan (known as a "pillared hardtop" thanks to the frameless window glass) was $5,072, which comes to $36,555 in today's dollars. Obviously, its out-the-door cost would have been much higher with all the options.

Junkyard Gem: 2007 Mercury Mariner Hybrid

Sat, Dec 19 2020

Once hybrid vehicles from Honda and Toyota proved to work well in the real world of American streets during the early 2000s, other U.S.-market manufacturers climbed aboard the gasoline-electric bandwagon. Ford introduced the Escape Hybrid for the 2005 model year and sales proved quite strong; its Mercury-badged sibling, the Mariner Hybrid, appeared the following year. The Mariner Hybrid never induced many vehicle shoppers to sign on the line which is dotted, despite gasoline prices going absolutely ape in 2008, though it remained available all the way through the Mercury brand's 2010 demise. Here's one of those rare trucks, found in a Denver-area yard last month. The Escape/Mariner Hybrids got amazing fuel economy for tall, truck-shaped machines, though the serious penny-pinchers with long commutes skipped anything built in the 21st century and began driving up the prices of the once-scorned Geo Metro XFi, gas-sipping champion of the previous decade. The Mercury brand was on the ropes by this time, with not much to distinguish the once-distinctive Mercury machines from their near-identical Ford counterparts. The 1999-2002 Cougar was the last Mercury sold here with no twin brothers over in the Ford showrooms. I do see the occasional Escape Hybrid in places like this, though such gas-saving small SUVs tend to retain their value well enough that it takes a crash to retire one. This Mariner Hybrid hit something hard and either flipped on its side or scraped a guardrail for some distance. The airbags deployed and, presumably, spared the occupants from serious injury. That's the good news. The bad news is that fixing this kind of damage to a 13-year-old vehicle made by a defunct brand just isn't worth it to insurance companies, hybrid-electric powertrain or not. We can assume that the battery pack lives on in another Escape/Mariner. Navigation, Bluetooth, and other features that were considered pretty slick in 2007. This truck was in pretty good shape until the very end. Jill Wagner proved that you can bury a Mercury emblem in volcanic soil and it will grow into a brand-new Mariner Hybrid. That's how science works! You can go to the same field and tap on a Mercury emblem, if you want to get a regular gasoline Mariner. Jill Wagner retired as Mercury spokeswoman

Wed, 17 Nov 2010

Jill Wagner has officially given up her crown as the queen of Mercury. With the Ford middle child on its way to the scrap heap, Wagner no longer has any automotive hardware to promote. Given her varied talents, we wouldn't be surprised to see her pick up where she left off with another automaker.
And here you thought you'd never be upset about Mercury's passing.
Thanks for the tip, Gregg!
