1967 Mercury Cougar – One-owner – 55,000 Original Miles – Orange County Lifetime Car

This is a very original, low-mileage, one-owner Mercury Cougar.  This Cougar was recently acquired from the estate of Bernard L. Bruckert.  Bernard purchased this Cougar new, for his wife Lola, on November 30, 1966 from Bricker Mercury in Hollywood and it still wears the original dealer license plate frames.  This Cougar has been garaged its whole life at 3152 Kittrick Drive in Los Alamitos as evidenced from the Mercury Cougar registered owner plan, the Quality Care Warranty identification cards, the small pink slip California title, and all subsequent registrations.  This amazingly original Cougar has been exceptionally well maintained throughout its life.

Complete with its original build sheet this is a very early Cougar.  This Cougar was produced on November 8, 1966 in Dearborn, Michigan.  It was released to the dealership in Hollywood, California on November 10, 1966 and put into service on November 30, 1966.  Documents show the original vehicle selling price to have been $3,820.00 with sales tax of $152.80 and a registration fee of $18.00, bringing the grand total to $3,990.80.  Financed for two years through the Automobile Club of Southern California, it was paid in full on November 29, 1968.  This is further evidenced by the clean small square pink slip showing a free and clear car dated February 12, 1969.

This is an amazingly preserved Mercury Cougar.  The body lines and mostly original paint clearly show it has never been in an accident.  There has been some minor touch up professionally done to the paint over the years.  This car has never been modified and never been in an accident.  We’ve all heard the line, “they’re only original once” followed by everything that’s been done to the car, well, nothing has been done to this car except normal maintenance.  It is 47 years old after all.

This Cougar is very original and very heavily optioned.  Options on this Cougar include: Black Vinyl Roof, Closed Crankcase Emission System, Exhaust Emission Control, C-4 Select-Shift Merc-O-Matic transmission, Courtesy Light Group, 7.35x14 – 4 ply Rated Tires, White Sidewall Rayon Tires, Console, Power Brakes, Power Steering, Air Conditioner – Whisperaire, AM/8-Track Stereo Radio, Tinted Windshield, Deluxe Seat Belts and Wheel Covers.  All of the options are verified by both the build sheet and the Marti Report.

Everything works as it should.  This Cougar is wearing new tires which are only its third set.  The previous tires were over 25 years old and had plenty of tread and no sidewall cracks but I believe that tires should not be old enough to get their own driver’s license.  The radio and 8-Track work.  It is an AM/8-Track Stereo with the Ford Factory 8-Track music tape.  The air conditioning system has been charged in the past and the hoses replaced.  It was charged with the original R-12, just like from the factory.  The air conditioning blows cold and by that I mean 40 degrees at the center vent (yes I measured it that’s what thermometers are for) at 75 degrees ambient temperature.  The dash lights, warning lights and all of interior lights work as well.  The Bruckerts did not smoke and the car has never been smoked in.  The seats, headliner, dash pad, mats and carpet are original and in great shape.  In the trunk, besides additional 8-Track tapes, you will find the original unused spare and the original jack.  The trunk mat is the original as well.  The sequential turn signals work as they should and the headlights go up and down effortlessly.  Under the hood you’ll find the original 289 which starts easily and runs strong.  On the underside of the hood is the original hood insulation pad.  All of the turn signal lenses and windows as well as the mirrors are crack free and original as well.

This Cougar, its documentation, and its 8-Track tape collection are all offered in this auction.  Please call John at 858-212-5396 with any questions.

Mustang, Camaro, Challenger gallop onto USPS pony car postage stamp set

Tue, Jul 19 2022

Some of America's most iconic cars are about to be immortalized on postage stamps. A new set by the U.S. Postal Service will celebrate the the golden era of pony cars, featuring five classic examples of Detroit iron. Each one is beautifully illustrated in oil-on-canvas style, with subjects in motion and sunlight glinting off the chrome, and would add a nice touch to any first-class letter. The pony car segment was all about (relatively) small, sporty alternatives to the full-size land yachts of the 1960s. They typically came equipped with 6-cylinder engines or small-block V8s. The category was named after the Ford Mustang, hence  the name. Some, though, argue that the Plymouth Barracuda, which was launched a couple of weeks before the Mustang, is the first. Luckily, the Falcon-based Mustang's distinct styling generated a sales sensation, or we might be calling them fish cars. Appropriately, one of the featured cars is a Mustang. But it's not just any Mustang. The 1969 Boss 302, seen here resplendent in Bright Yellow, was created for the hotly-contested SCCA Trans-Am racing series. One of its main rivals would have been the 1969 Chevy Camaro Z/28, also created specifically for the series, and is included in the set in Fathom Green. Representing Auburn Hills in the set is a 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T in Plum Crazy, while Southfield's American Motors gets a nod with an AMC Javelin in Big Bad Orange. The Mustang's platform cousin, a 1967 Mercury Cougar XR-7, is portrayed in a gorgeous Burgundy Poly that almost looks incomplete without Neko Case on the hood. It's not the first time the USPS has honored America's rich car culture on its stamps. In 2013, it issues a series of muscle car stamps with the help of Richard Petty. That set featured a 1966 Pontiac GTO, 1967 Shelby GT-500, 1970 Chevelle SS, 1970 Plymouth Hemi ’Cuda and, of course, a 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona. Another set in 2016 featured classic pickup trucks. Going further back, a 2008 release had chroed and finned automobiles of the 1950s and a 2005 release featured sporty American cars of the same era. The pony car stamps will debut on August 25 at the Great American Stamp Show in Sacramento, California in partnership with the American Philatelic Society. The public is free to attend the dedication ceremony, but you must RSVP first. After that, they will be available at local post offices and on line at the USPS store.

Ford recalling 450,000 Fusion, Mercury Milan sedans

Tue, Nov 24 2015

Ford has announced a pair of recalls, and both are critical safety issues. The exponentially larger of the two recall campaigns affects over 450,000 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan sedans manufactured at the Hermosillo plant between July 21, 2008, and March 4, 2011. The canister purge valve in the fuel tank could malfunction and could cause the top of the tank to crack and leak fuel. That could cause a fire, although Ford "is not aware of any accidents, injuries or fires" resulting from the issue. Affected vehicles will have their ECU software updated and their fuel tanks inspected for potential replacement. The company estimates there are 411,205 affected units in the United States (and its federalized territories), plus another 33,605 in Canada, and 7,055 in Mexico. The second recall affects 13 F-650 trucks. The column shifter's park position mechanism may fracture and let the truck roll away unexpectedly. Those 2016 models built in Ohio between July 29 and September 3, 2015 are all located in the US. Fixing the problem will require replacing the steering column and reconfiguring the instrument panel. FORD ISSUES TWO SAFETY RECALLS IN NORTH AMERICA DEARBORN, Mich., Nov. 23, 2015 – Ford Motor Company is issuing two safety recalls in North America. Ford is not aware of any accidents, injuries or fires related to these conditions. Details are as follows: Ford issues safety recall for certain 2010-2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan vehicles in North America for potential fuel tank issue Ford Motor Company is issuing a safety recall for approximately 450,000 2010-2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan vehicles for a potential issue with the fuel tank. Some of these vehicles might have a canister purge valve that does not work properly, causing internal pressure changes inside the fuel tank. Repeated pressure changes inside the tank could result in a crack on the top of the tank, possibly allowing fuel to leak. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can lead to a fire. Ford is not aware of any accidents, injuries or fires related to this condition. Affected vehicles include certain 2010-2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan vehicles built at Hermosillo Assembly Plant from July 21, 2008 through March 4, 2011. There are a total of approximately 451,865 vehicles that might be affected in North America, including 411,205 vehicles in the United States and federalized territories, 33,605 in Canada and 7,055 in Mexico.

Petrolicious shows Mercedes 280SL as architecture in motion

Wed, Jun 17 2015

While still an absolute beauty today, the design of the pagoda-roof W113 Mercedes-Benz SL was revolutionary when it debuted. Moving away from the soft curves of the previous SL models, the all-new generation brought an upright, angular shape that was as much architectural as automotive. In the latest video from Petrolicious, owner and architect Daniel Monti expounds on the inspiration that he gets from his 1969 280SL's fantastic styling. The roof is the most famous design feature of this generation of SL. Look at the top from the front or back, and you can see a gentle, downward arc that evokes the look of a pagoda. That one styling element is also a fabulous counterpoint to a vehicle that is largely more angular than curvaceous. Petrolicious wonderfully illustrates how some of the SL's form-follows-function design aesthetic can be found in the architect's work in this video's heaping helping of mid-century modern goodness.
