1968 Mercury Cougar Gt 390 4v C6 9"- One Owner California Car!!! on 2040-cars
Cartersville, Georgia, United States

I have for sale a 1968 Mercury Cougar. This car is in the original Black Cherry paint, and was obtained from the original owner's family. He purchased the car new in 1968 in San Diego, California from Pascal-Dilday Mercury (car still has the dealer emblem on the rear). The car stayed in San Diego until about 7 years ago, when the owner moved to GA, and it has been mostly stored indoors since. The body isn't perfect, with the worst part being the passenger side rear quarter (pictured), but there is no rust and no filler (original paint). This car is faded, but would be an easy restoration. The car is a real GT, and has the factory disc brakes, 390 4V V-8, C6 automatic, and the original 9" rear. The brakes have been recently inspected, with all needed repairs done (rear hose, master cylinder, lines, and the proportioning valve was rebuilt). The transmission was professionally rebuilt with a mild shift kit and torque convertor to match the camshaft, and has 0 miles on it. The rear has also been rebuilt with all new bearings, and a new set of 3.70 gears. The 390 has been modified with an Edlebrock Performer RPM package, with aluminum cylinder heads, intake manifold, and the matching camshaft and lifters. It also has an Edelbrock aluminum waterpump. Roller rockers have been installed. The carburetor is a new Holley 750 vacuum secondary. The original 4v Motorcraft carb is included, along with the original air cleaner and smog pump. The car is equipped with an MSD6 ignition box and billet distributor. The fuel tank and sending unit are new. The car has long tube headers of unknown manufacture, and a new Flowmaster exhaust system. All glass is good, and the trim and bumpers are in very good shape for original. The tail lights and all other lenses are in good shape. The dash is excellent, with only a slight warping of the pad (no cracks). The seats need recovering, and the carpet and headliner need replacement. To my knowledge, the suspension is all original. Wiring is in good shape.
The bad? The 390 has a rod knock, which is going to require at least a crank kit to repair. Included with the car are a set of forged Speed Pro pistons and Eagle H-beam rods. The local machine shop estimates the short block rebuild at around $1000. The vehicle is being stored at a full service restoration shop, which can do any needed repairs for additional cost, up to a full restoration. This car would take very little to restore. The data plate is still on the door, and the car has a clear California title. You won't find a better restorable Cougar than this one! |

Question of the Day: Most degraded car name?
Fri, May 27 2016When Ford came up with a not-so-sporty version of the Pinto and slapped Mustang badges on it in 1974, that was a low point for the Mustang name. When Chrysler applied the venerable Town & Country name on perfectly functional but unglamorous minivans, it saddened many of us. But perhaps the biggest demotion for a once-proud model came when, in 1988, General Motors imported a misery-enhancing Daewoo from Korea and called it the Pontiac LeMans. The original Pontiac LeMans was a great-looking midsize car with fairly advanced (for the time) suspension design and engine options including potent V8s and a screaming overhead-cam straight-six. The Daewoo-based Pontiac LeMans was a cramped, shoddy hooptie that served only to ruin the LeMans name forever, while stealing sales from the Suzuki-based Chevrolet Sprint. Sure, using the once-respected Monterey name on the Mercurized Ford Freestar was bad, but Mercury didn't have long to live at that point. I say the downward spiral of the LeMans name was the most agonizing in automotive history. What do you think? Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. Ford Announces Free Brake-Pad Offer If Customers Stop By Dealers
Mon, Aug 4 2014These days, when you buy a new car, it's not unreasonable to expect a certain period of free maintenance to come along as well. Sometimes this is through the life of the warranty, in other cases a little less. But Ford Motor Company is going beyond those deals for at least one part of its cars. As of now, if you buy a set of Motorcraft brake pads for a Ford, Lincoln or Mercury model, you get free replacements for as long as you own the vehicle. The offer is good at Ford or Lincoln dealers and Quick Lane Tire & Auto Centers. "We will replace the pads for as long as you own the vehicle," said Elizabeth Weigandt to Autoblog. She did clarify that the Motorcraft pads are generally for models from the '90s or newer. Also, to take advantage of this program, a person must return to the same dealer each time to get the free parts. Of course, Ford isn't just handing out brake pads to anyone who walks by; there are certain stipulations. First, the components have to be worn down to less than three millimeters to be eligible, and the buyer still has to pay for the labor to install them. If the model is used as a fleet vehicle for commercial purposes like as a taxi or limousine, this offer also doesn't apply; the same thing for racecars. On the plus side, if you recently bought a set of pads from one of the participating locations, you're still in luck. The deal covers parts purchased as of July 1. "This program reflects our commitment to providing customers with an excellent ownership experience regardless of the age of their vehicle," said Frederiek Toney, President of Ford Customer Service, in the company's announcement of the offer. NHTSA closes probes on Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey
Wed, 09 Jan 2013The Detroit News reports the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has officially closed its investigations into 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 2004-2005 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey models. The separate probes found no issues that pose safety concerns. NHTSA began investigating certain Grand Cherokee SUVs over complaints that power steering hoses could detach during operation, thereby increasing the risk of a vehicle fire. Of the 24 reports of failure, none alleged smoke or fire in the engine bay, and Chrysler has since modified the power steering cooler assembly to reduce the likelihood of the failure.
Meanwhile, certain Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey vehicles garnered a government probe after receiving complaints that the models were equipped with faulty scissor jacks. The agency had received six reports of the jacks failing or causing injuries, including one incident that resulted in a fatality. But NHTSA says the jack failure rate is similar to those found in other vehicles. In those six cases, the government agency found the jacks were being used for something other than changing a tire, and investigators could not determine whether the emergency brake was set or the rear tires were properly chocked.
