Mercedes-AMG promises something fast is coming

Wed, Jul 1 2015

"Something fast is coming." That's all that Mercedes-AMG is saying to accompany this latest teaser video. Don't get us wrong: we don't doubt the power-hungry nuts from Affalterbach for one second. They've got a pretty good track record of delivering the performance goods, after all. We just don't know what it is that they're on about is all. Not that something like that would stop us from hazarding an educated guess, though. Crank up your speakers, play the 19-second video clip and you'll hear what sounds very much like a V8 winding up and down through its rev range. In fact it sounds a lot like the note coming out the back of the Mercedes-AMG GT, which emits a pretty raspy, burblesome noise despite the pair of turbochargers that would ordinarily muffle the song. Couple that noise with flat handling around what looks like Hockenheim and our best guess is that we'll soon be treated to a more hardcore version of the AMG GT – something to slot in between the road-going GT S and the race-spec GT3 (which, it's worth noting, carried over the atmospheric engine from the previous SLS). We spotted such a beast undergoing testing at the Nurburgring just a few months ago, and have been anticipating its arrival ever since. The resulting track toy may not be called the Black Series, but we bet it'll be plenty wicked all the same - whatever it's called.

As US exports top 2 million, is America becoming the world's source of cheap cars?

Mon, Feb 9 2015

North American auto production is booming with 2014 figures just shy of the of the 17.3-million vehicle record set in 2000. With more models being built on the continent, even more are being shipped overseas. Factories in the US exported 2.1 million cars last year – the highest number ever. About half of those went to Canada and Mexico, but more than ever have been heading to places like the Middle East and China. The upswing comes in part from from after-effects from the Great Recession, according to The Wall Street Journal. With a weak dollar and lower production costs after the financial crisis, building vehicles in the US was relatively cheaper and more competitive in the world. At the same time buyers around the world are going crazy for crossovers. According to the WSJ, BMW and Mercedes-Benz are already exporting the majority of their US production of these models overseas. Both automakers have also announced investments to expand production further here to send more vehicles abroad. Even Honda has been shipping more models out of the country than it imported here. There is a concern this international strength could start slowing because the dollar is strengthening against other currencies, though it's too early to know what the actual effect of this could be, according to the WSJ. "Of course, we closely watch currency exchange, but we don't make changes in production or allocation based on temporary fluctuations in the exchange rate," Ford North American boss Joe Hinrichs told the newspaper. 2015 Brazilian Grand Prix is the same as it ever was

Mon, Nov 16 2015

At this point, we hope Nico Rosberg is planning to carry his current qualifying form into the 2016 season and back it up with the same kind of race-day cojones he showed winning the race in Mexico City two weeks ago. The Mercedes-AMG Petronas driver got it right enough again on Saturday afternoon to take his fifth consecutive pole position ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton by almost a tenth of a second. It's the same one-two from Brazil last year. The bad news for the rest of the field is that the winner in Brazil the last seven years has been one of the two drivers on the front row. Last year it was the Williams duo that lined up behind Mercedes, this year it's Ferrari. Sebastian Vettel plays the stalking horse, securing third in his Ferrari ahead of teammate Kimi Raikkonen in fourth. Williams driver Valtteri Bottas actually qualified in fourth, but he had to serve a three-spot grid penalty for passing under red flags in Free Practice 2, so he started sixth. That promoted Sahara Force India driver Nico Hulkenberg up to fifth. Daniil Kvyat was the quickest representative from Infiniti Red Bull Racing, getting into seventh even with a Renault power unit that's weak on some of the key stretches at the Interlagos track. Felipe Massa had the second Williams in eighth, in front of the second Red Bull driven by Daniel Ricciardo in ninth. Toro Rosso hasn't confirmed its drivers for next year but Max Verstappen keeps making it hard to look elsewhere, taking 10th. Rosberg is working nearly the same trick he pulled last year: drive like a second driver for most of the year, drive like a world champion for the last quarter of a season. He pulled away at the start and covered Hamilton just enough on the run to the first corner to keep Hamilton on the outside. By the end of Turn 1 the German had the lead and didn't give it up for the rest of the race outside of pit stops. Without overwhelming pace to pass and unable to follow closely, Hamilton could do nothing except ask his team for a different strategy to go for the win. When Mercedes told him "No," trying to protect Rosberg's second place in the championship ahead of Vettel, that was the race. Just like last year, Rosberg and Hamilton finished one-two. Vettel, Raikkonen, Bottas, Hulkenberg, and Kvyat drove lonely races to finish in positions three through seven.
