US buyers show little interest in big hybrids
Sat, May 10 2014The idea of producing large, luxury-vehicle hybrids is turning into a "what were they thinking?" exercise in futility, USA Today reports. General Motors is discontinuing hybrid versions of the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon SUVs, while Mercedes-Benz and Toyota's Lexus division are doing the same with their S-Class hybrid and LS hybrid sedans, respectively. The culprit? Big price increases for fuel economy improvements that border on the unimpressive. Granted, the Escalade hybrid gets 31 percent better fuel economy than the standard version, but that still maps out to a combined fuel-efficiency rating of just 21 miles per gallon. That can be seen as a worthwhile increase, if it didn't cost over $8,000 extra. The 2014 Escalade Hybrid, for example, starts at $74,425 while the non-hybrid can be had for $66,295. Meanwhile, the Lexus full-size hybrid costs $6,000 more than the regular version but only gets 1-2 mpg better combined fuel economy. The result of all these high costs? Low sales. Through April, GM sold 82 of its hybrid SUVs and pickups, down from 541 a year earlier. And the LS hybrid sales were in single-digit territory for April. That isn't stopping Lexus from promoting its hybrids as the right solution (with the wrong facts), though. There are still automakers giving big hybrid vehicles a shot, though. Nissan's Infiniti division is selling a hybrid version of its QX60 and says an impressive 10 percent of QX60 buyers choose the hybrid, which costs just $3,000 more. Looks like money talks. Production Mercedes GLC Coupe coming in 2016
Fri, Sep 18 2015If the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe Concept from this year's Shanghai Motor Show caught your eye, we've got good news. The company confirmed that this model will enter production, and we should see the road-going model early next year, probably at the New York Auto Show. Dr. Gunnar Guthenke, Mercedes' G-Class boss, confirmed this during an event following this week's Frankfurt Motor Show. He's particularly proud of how Mercedes has expanded its crossover and SUV lines, and the addition of the BMW X4-fighting GLC Coupe only proves further commitment to this growth. The numbers don't lie – Mercedes' crossover and SUV sales are up 25 percent this year, compared to 2014 numbers. Even Mercedes' halo of SUVs, the G-Class, is experiencing increased sales. The company set a record for G-Class sales in 2014, and is on track to do it again this year; sales are up roughly 20 percent. For 2016, the G-Wagen gets a number of enhancements, including a 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V8 as the new base engine. Other markets get a new diesel engine for 2016, and more updates are on the way. "Our legend has a bright future," Guthenke said. We'll have a full review of the updated G550 next week, so stay tuned.
The Mansory Speranza proves that money can buy taste and good sense...
Tue, 05 Mar 2013...Just kidding.
No one in their right mind has ever accused German tuners Mansory of being subtle. So, when our Geneva team wandered across the Mansory Speranza - A Mercedes-Benz Gelandewagen that has been denuded of its roof and spackled inside with quilted leather and red carbon fiber - they didn't ask a lot of existential questions. Why does the Speranza exist? Because Germans are weird sometimes, that's why.
Forget for a moment that you'll have to pay Mansory hundreds of thousands of euros (we're guessing, no pricing information has been revealed) for the privilege of converting your G-Class into something that looks like a Suzuki Samurai, and prepare to be impressed by the details. The tuning house has increased the output of the Mercedes V8 to a healthy 700 horsepower and 668 pound-feet of torque. The wheels are 24-inches, and wear almost unbelievable 305-section ultra-high performance Vresdestein tires. Carbon fiber can be found nearly everywhere one looks, including making up the housing for the spare tire. Oh, and there are leather pillows for the backseats... no word on whether they're standard or optional, but we're looking in to it.
