Drive visits a Mercedes Pagoda collector in Bangkok
Tue, Aug 4 2015The term "icon" gets thrown around a lot, but if there was ever an automobile that deserved the honorific, certainly the Mercedes SL is one of them. Now in its sixth generation, the SL has been the prototypical German roadster since the 1950s. A sports car with that long a history will inevitably attract a great many collectors, but with values of first-generation 300 SLs and 190 SLs skyrocketing, those enthusiasts without bottomless pockets are turning in growing numbers to the second generation. Known as the Pagoda due to the design of its removable hardtop, the W113-generation SL arrived in 1963 and stayed in production until 1971. By that point Mercedes had built nearly 50,000 of them, selling over 19,000 of those in the United States alone. Through three engine variants – dubbed 230, 250 and 250 SL – and numerous body-styles, all featured an inline-six, transmitting to the road through manual or automatic transmissions with four or five gears. More of a cruiser, then, that an outright sports car, but one that warrants its place in the history of the automobile. In this latest episode, Drive travels to Bangkok to profile a local enthusiast and collector. That's a rather difficult undertaking in Thailand, where it's illegal to import old cars, but Sittisan Quan Sundaravej rises to the challenge, locating classics together with like-minded local enthusiasts. The heart of his collection, though, isn't one he acquired, but rather inherited from his late father. That's the kind of provenance you can't buy.
Recharge Wrap-Up: No new Smart Roadster, Africa to UK on one tank, Duke's efficient axial engine [w/videos]
Sat, Jul 19 2014Smart will not make another generation of the Roadster, but a Smart SUV might be in the cards. According to Smart's CEO, Annette Winkler, "The Roadster isn't a profitable business case. Everybody is keen on the car, but nobody wants to pay the bill." What Car? states that Smart is likely planning a baby SUV to take on the Nissan Juke and its ilk. But for the immediate future, Winkler says Smart "must focus on how we can maximize potential of the Fortwo and Forfour. That is strategy number one." Read more over at What Car?. A Mercedes-Benz E300 Bluetec Hybrid made the 1,223-mile trek from Africa to the UK on just one tank of fuel. Driven by Andrew Frankel of Autocar, the diesel hybrid left Tangier, Morocco with a full tank of gas (using the optional 80-liter fuel tank), and arrived in Goodwood with the car indicating 100 miles of range left. Frankel and his co-driver averaged 61.2 miles per gallon (73.6 mpg UK) on the intercontinental journey through four countries, despite elevation changes and a traffic jam. See the first video below for more information, or check out the article at Carscoops. Duke Engines promises simplicity and efficiency from the axial engine it's developing. Rather than lining up the cylinders, this engine arranges them in a circle, which allows Duke to avoid unnecessary weight. The five-cylinder, four-stroke motor manages the same amount of powerstrokes per revolution as a standard six-cylinder mill, but weighs 30 percent less. It also has much fewer parts, says Duke. Its high compression ratios mean more power with less fuel, which adds up to more efficiency and fewer emissions. The second of the two videos below, which we first found over at Sploid, explains Duke's axial engine. This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Mercedes CLA facelift spotted in Germany
Tue, Oct 6 2015It's only been a couple of years since Mercedes launched the CLA-Class, but it appears the German automaker is already preparing mild revisions for the compact four-door. Spotted undergoing testing at the company's R&D center in Sindelfingen, Germany, this disguised prototype is likely packing many of the updates that were recently applied to the A-Class hatchback with which the CLA shares most of its underpinnings. As you can see, the front end is camouflaged to disguise the shape of a new grille, bumper, and headlights. Expect similar revisions to be applied to the back as well. Don't expect any drastic mechanical changes in most of the models, which will surely cut the svelte model's fuel consumption and carbon emissions incrementally. We can likely look forward to the arrival of the new AMG version that will hopefully pack the revised 2.0-liter turbo four that produces 381 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque in the updated Mercedes-AMG A45 – a not-insignificant boost of 36 hp and 18 lb-ft over the existing version. Mercedes won't pass up the opportunity to update the interior with new trim and equipment. That should mean a bigger infotainment screen, a new instrument cluster, and even more comfortable seats. Look for all this and more when the revised CLA arrives sometime next year, likely as a 2017 model. Related Video:
