Brabus spools up new 850 6.0 Biturbo Coupe
Wed, Mar 4 2015With a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 cranking out 577 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque, the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe is not the first vehicle we'd figure was in need of an upgrade. But the folks over at Brabus have evidently felt otherwise, bringing the 850 6.0 Biturbo Coupe to the Geneva Motor Show this year. Now the name might be slightly misleading, but not by much: the revving heart of this beast has been bored out to 5.9 liters and its output raised to 838 horsepower (by our standards). The modified engine also includes new turbochargers, breathing apparati and a remapped ECU to produce an even more prodigious 1,069 pound-feet of torque – although to keep the whole thing from going up in flames, Brabus has limited that last figure to 848 lb-ft. The top speed has been limited to "only" 217 miles per hour to keep the tires from melting, but it'll reach 62 mph from a standstill in just 3.5 seconds. That makes this bahn-stormer blisteringly fast, though the seven-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive system have been left largely unchanged. Naturally that's not the end of the story, as the Brabus 850 6.0 Biturbo Coupe also features a full new carbon-fiber aero kit, wheel options ranging from 18 inches to 22, a completely refitted interior and oh, so much more. Chances are you'll never see one sitting still, so you'll want to scope it out in the slideshow of live images from the floor of the Geneva Palexpo for a closer look. Related Video:
Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton buys LaFerrari
Tue, Mar 24 2015Lewis Hamilton has driven some of the fastest cars ever devised, like the McLaren MP4-23 with which he won the 2008 Formula One World Championship, the Mercedes W05 with which he won the title last year, and the new W06 he drove to the checkered flag in the season opener earlier this month. But what does he drive in his spare time? According to the latest reports quoting his boss Toto Wolff, the reigning champ celebrated his win at the Australian Grand Prix by ordering a new LaFerrari. The seven-figure, 950-horsepower hybrid hypercar may be made by a rival manufacturer to the team for which he drives, but then his employers at Mercedes don't (for the time being at least) build anything that competes in the segment – unlike his former employers at McLaren that offer the similarly potent P1. Something tells us he won't be invited to drive it at Fiorano, though - which is something his rivals Fernando Alonso, Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel have all had the chance to do. Hamilton has a long-established penchant for driving twelve-cylinder exotic supercars in his spare time. At his previous place of work, he was promised an exceedingly rare McLaren F1 LM – valued at some $4 million – but only if he won three world titles for the Woking-based team. He also owns a Pagani Zonda that was made specifically for him with a 760-horsepower engine (supplied, naturally, by Mercedes) and a six-speed manual – complete with a clutch pedal, which (apart from starting off the line) is something he doesn't usually get to operate during working hours. Mercedes-AMG promises something fast is coming
Wed, Jul 1 2015"Something fast is coming." That's all that Mercedes-AMG is saying to accompany this latest teaser video. Don't get us wrong: we don't doubt the power-hungry nuts from Affalterbach for one second. They've got a pretty good track record of delivering the performance goods, after all. We just don't know what it is that they're on about is all. Not that something like that would stop us from hazarding an educated guess, though. Crank up your speakers, play the 19-second video clip and you'll hear what sounds very much like a V8 winding up and down through its rev range. In fact it sounds a lot like the note coming out the back of the Mercedes-AMG GT, which emits a pretty raspy, burblesome noise despite the pair of turbochargers that would ordinarily muffle the song. Couple that noise with flat handling around what looks like Hockenheim and our best guess is that we'll soon be treated to a more hardcore version of the AMG GT – something to slot in between the road-going GT S and the race-spec GT3 (which, it's worth noting, carried over the atmospheric engine from the previous SLS). We spotted such a beast undergoing testing at the Nurburgring just a few months ago, and have been anticipating its arrival ever since. The resulting track toy may not be called the Black Series, but we bet it'll be plenty wicked all the same - whatever it's called.
