The Mercedes-Benz CL-Class CL550 is powered by a 388-horsepower, 5.5L V8 and seven-speed automatic transmission. The CL550 can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in only 5.4 seconds, according to Mercedes-Benz, it takes only 116 feet to brake from 60 mph to a standstill. CL-Class coupes, which parallels the S-Class sedan, serves as the technology flagship of the Mercedes-Benz line with a series of leading technology features available, some not offered on any other production vehicle. Standouts include the sophisticated active body control suspension, standard on all models, which almost instantaneously adjusts damping response to driving conditions; Distronic Plus cruise control, which will maintain a safe distance relative to traffic ahead and even bring the vehicle to a full stop, starting again when traffic moves; and a night-vision system that bathes the road ahead in infra-red light.Safety features are aplenty. Dual front side, side curtain, and knee bags are included, along with Brake Assist Plus, and an advanced PRE-SAFE system that anticipates a potential crash and primes safety systems

2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class vs big luxury off-roaders: How they compare on paper
Mon, May 7 2018During our first drive of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, the all-new SUV's product manager was asked to identify competitors that might have been benchmarked in its development. The look on his face was about the same as if someone had asked him to recite King Lear in Klingon. As far as Andreas Hoeppel was concerned, the G 550 and AMG G 63 doesn't actually have a rival, or at least something the engineers and designers thought to compare it against. The G-Class is a G-Class, who cares what the other guys are doing? Well, in case you care, we figured we'd plug the new G-Class' specs into the old Autoblog Comparo Generator 3000 (TM) to see how the G 550 and AMG G 63 compare to the Range Rover and its mightiest SVAutobiography Dynamic model, plus the Lexus LX 570 and Bentley Bentayga V8. Frankly, Heir Hoeppel was onto something as each of these is wildly different. But, they do share some common elements: giant size and weight, ultra-lux interiors, and far more off-roading capability than other luxury SUVs offer and any of its owners are likely to ever utilize. Sad. So enjoy this trip down specification lane, and if you're still left hungry, you can always check out our Range Rover comparison or create your very own comparo. Off-Road Clearances and Capability All the fancy off-roading software and special cameras in the world won't do you a lick of good if your SUV is too close to the ground or has low-hanging body work that'll get easily ripped off. As such, check out each of these uber-SUV's ground clearance, approach and departure angles, and wading/fording depths. In this case, the Range Rover has an advantage due to its air suspension that can raise itself into an Off-Roading height that's a whopping 2 inches higher than the new G-Wagen. Sadly for itself, Lexus only provides figures for its air suspension when in normal height. It could match or surpass the Range Rover for all we know (but doubt it). As Land Rover does provide figures for the Range Rover's approach and departure angles in normal and Off-Road height, you can get an idea of just how much clearance the new G-Wagen has without any fancy (and expensive to fix) raising and lowering air suspension hardware. In fact, its departure angle is better than even the Range Rover's Off-Road height. Bentley doesn't provide any such information despite touting the Bentayga's surprising off-roading talents.
On Location at the Portimao circuit in Portugal with Mercedes
Tue, Apr 28 2015Portugal is a beautiful country, full of friendly people, historic cities, stunning coastline and, of course, vineyards. What brought us to Mainland Europe's westernmost country, though, was the high-speed promise of the Algarve International Circuit in Portimao. Mercedes-AMG was kind enough to host the international press launch of its standard-setting C63 and C63 S sedans at the Portuguese racing circuit, and we came away impressed, both with the car and with the track. It's tough work, but somebody's got to do it... Join Consumer Editor Jeremy Korzeniewski in Portimao above to learn more about the race track and the country in which it resides, and if you want to see what the circuit looks like from behind the wheel, we suggest you watch the video below. My year in EVs: 8 electrics that are changing the car industry
Wed, Dec 1 2021The year 2021 will go down as an inflection point in the auto industry’s transition to electric vehicles. It's when many much-anticipated models became reality. No longer sketches or sketchy prototypes, electric vehicles appeared from all corners with everything from the Lucid Air to Ford Mustang Mach-E changing how we think about transportation. I managed to drive a lot of them, and as I went through my notes, I realized IÂ’ve got a mini memoir of the seminal EVs of 2021. HereÂ’s my take on eight of them. Hummer EV Easily the most over-the-top EV I tested this year. The 1,000-hp super truck lived up to the hype with its domineering presence, stupendous power and simply being a reincarnated Hummer. I took it for a short spin on- and off-road at the General Motors Proving Grounds in Milford, Mich., and was impressed with the airy cabin, removable sky panels and expansive touchscreens. Yes, I crab walked, which felt like steering a pontoon boat, though I can see why it would be useful. Lucid Air Dream Performance The most beautiful sedan I tested all year, EV or otherwise. Unlike the futuristic Mercedes EQS — which is quite attractive — LucidÂ’s car is a blend of mid-century modern interior aesthetics and classic European exterior styling. When I walked up for my test drive, someone who IÂ’m pretty sure was comedian Jon Lovitz was sitting inside and taking it all in. As it sat in the valet of a hotel in a wealthy suburban enclave north of Detroit, the Lucid drew more attention than any of the Mercedes, Cadillacs or Lexus models passing by. The driving experience was enveloping. Starting at $169,000 for the Performance model (reservations are closed), the Lucid I sampled packed 1,111 hp and 471 miles of range. From the precise steering to the comfortable suspension, the dynamics were spot-on. It's a formidable product, and all the more impressive given itÂ’s LucidÂ’s first. Chevy Bolt EV The Bolt was the most pleasant surprise for me. It handled well, offered low-to-the-ground hot hatch dynamics and the steering was dialed-in. Adding a crossover variant for the new generation was a smart play. On a summer morning where I went to a first drive of the Ford Bronco at an off-road course, my hour-long commute in the Bolt was an enjoyable appetizer. The Bolt was also my biggest disappointment due to its extensive recalls for fire risk. Ironically, I had the Bolt in my driveway when the initial recall went out for the previous generation (2017-19).
