Mercedes spotted testing updated A45 AMG
Wed, May 27 2015Now on the market (or some markets at any rate) for a couple of years already in its current form, Mercedes is preparing a slight refresh for the A-Class. And that means a new A45 AMG performance version, as well. Pictured undergoing testing in Germany, this prototype is hiding some enhancements for the littlest Benz. We're expecting the updates to be rather subtle, but they ought to help the Silver Star hatch keep up with the likes of the BMW 1 Series and Audi A3 in the increasingly competitive premium hatchback market. Best of all, Mercedes is tipped to be preparing an even more powerful A45 AMG S with over 400 horsepower to keep pace with the upcoming Volkswagen Golf R400. Unfortunately the A-Class isn't offered in North America, but we can hope that some of the enhancements (especially in the performance department) are ported over to the CLA-Class sedan and GLA crossover as well. 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK250 Bluetec gets 33 mpg, priced from $38,950*
Tue, 30 Apr 2013It's been more than a year since we first saw the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK250 Bluetec unveiled at the 2012 New York Auto Show, but it looks like the compact diesel crossover is finally starting to roll into dealerships. Those wanting to buy a diesel GLK will only have to pony up an extra $1,500 over a base, gas-powered GLK350, as the GLK250's starting price is listed at $38,590 (*not including $905 destination charge).
The turbocharged 2.1-liter four-cylinder diesel produces 200 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, and Mercedes-Benz has also provided some fuel economy numbers for this model, with claimed EPA estimates of 24 miles per gallon city and 33 mpg highway. There is no listing for the GLK250 on the EPA's website yet, but the figures represent significant increase over the GLK350's lackluster 19 mpg city and 25 mpg highway figures, which are for the rear-wheel drive model. The GLK250 comes standard with the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system - a $2,000 option on GLK350 - meaning that if you want an all-wheel-drive version of the 2013 GLK, it's actually cheaper to opt for the diesel model. Head over to the Mercedes-Benz site for the full 2013 GLK-Class configurator.
Recharge Wrap-up: Mercedes stationary batteries, 2015 E-Mazing Race
Tue, Jun 2 2015Mercedes-Benz is following Tesla's Powerwall in selling stationary batteries for home, business, and industrial solar energy storage. The lithium-ion batteries will come in 2.5- and 5.9-kWh capacities, and can be linked together. Daimler's vehicle battery technology, "has proven to work for millions of driven kilometers in the toughest environments of heat and cold, which makes it the best candidate also for stationary use," says Harald Kroeger of Mercedes-Benz. Pricing is unavailable as of yet, but Mercedes promises "competitive" pricing when the batteries go on sale at the Intersolar trade fair (June 10 through 12) in Munich, Germany. The race challenges drivers to earn the most points by charging at Sun Country Highway charging stations in a month. Contestants needn't have been at the official starting point nor cross the finish line; they just needed to sign up and download the race app to participate. More remote charging stations offer more points when charging, and participants can also win prizes for photos and using social media. The 2015 E-Mazing Race, which began May 27 and ends June 24, is meant to raise awareness of electric vehicles. Sun Country is working on expanding its EV charging infrastructure in the US, so don't be surprised to see the race encompassing most of North America in the future. Read more at Green Car Reports. Linde has opened a new hydrogen fueling station in Innsbruck, Austria. The station, located in the popular destination city that has twice hosted the Winter Olympics, will allow hydrogen-powered vehicles to cross the Alps and travel between Italy and Germany. The station is capable of 700-bar refueling and can fuel six cars per hour. It was built as part of the HyFive project to create hydrogen fueling infrastructure across Europe to facilitate the rollout of fuel cell vehicles. It is the second public hydrogen station in Austria. Read more at Green Car Congress, or in the press release below from Linde.
