Mercedes-benz Other on 2040-cars
Silt, Colorado, United States
After an 8-year love affair, my Unimog and I must part company. I am moving to a place that suffered a forest fire four years ago, and there is no work for the Unimog to do there! On my current property, the Mog and I cleared probably 600 trees, all the slash, and all the logs over the years. I imported it from Germany where it was ex-Army, hence all the drab green. The German Army used the backhoe that used to be attached to the rear platform. In a backhoe application, one needs to add 600# to the front bumper to balance the weight of the 'hoe. I imagine it was not all that fast with all this gear on it. I just wanted the bed to dump, so my importer put the hydraulic cylinder in and plumbed it all up per Mercedes. He also put a new top fabric on, and since it has always been garaged, it still looks new. It is a 6-liter and has a 6-speed. In town, one gets by just fine with using 4th, 5th and 6th. Crunching around in close quarters in the woods, the other gears work just great. The truck tops out at 35-40 mph (70 kph.). The windows aren't shown in the pictures, but I have them. I also have a spare tire (185#) that I don't keep on the truck, since the spare tire location make a great step for accessing the bed. I also have the spotlights and the wipers that came with it stock. I am a part-time restorer of German cars, so, naturally, I couldn't keep my hands off it. In all the pictures, if you see something that is not green, that means that I took it off and had it chromed, powder coated, or otherwise refurbished. This includes, but isn't limited to: the front bumper, all the fenders, the battery box, the gas tank, the rims, the steps, the mirrors, both air tanks, the snorkel, various brackets, and the headlight grills. Lots of the hydraulic and air lines got stripped. I have put four new shocks on it. I bought new taillight lenses and spent lots of time fussing with making the rear of the truck look spiffy. I bought new bumper-end antenenas - they help when in close quarters with trees. I painted all the drain and fill plugs red, per the Mercedes manual. I bought an extra-thick engine cover that fits over the stock one for extra sound dampening (this was a really good idea!). It has a exhaust pyrometer (don't exceed 1200F!). I put this on under the advice of someone smarter than I after I increased the fuel pump injector amount for additional horsepower. (M-B make a 90- 100- and 100-hp. engine for the 406 - all the same engine, with differing injection pump tweaking. This truck has the 110-hp setting.) I also have an inclinometer. M-B says the 406 can traverse a 45 degree side slope. I never verified this, but I can tell you that at 35 degrees, it's pretty crazy! The original oil-bath air cleaner isn't in the truck, but I have it. The paper element air filter made an immediate difference in the power it made. Here at 5000', we need all the power we can get. I also replaced the bed in the back. I can't remember exactly what material I used, but it's Marine-grade something. It has stood up handsomely to years of throwing logs in the back. As shown in the pictures, it dumps to each side, as well as to the back. Jeepers hear this: we have 19" under the differentials! I bought and replaced with new the clutch hydraulic cylinder, the brake master cylinder, the muffler, the alternator, and the battery box cover. I had the radiator and the heater core both boiled out and rodded. I have recently (within the last 20 gallons of fuel) replaced the lubricants in the transmission, the engine, the front and rear differentials, and the gearboxes in each of the four wheel hubs (the portal axles). She is good to go for another 10 or 20 years! In terms of the life of a Unimog, and Hobbs meter tells all. It is attached to the engine and registers hours of engine use. This truck has 1153 hours on it. I am told that when a Mog has 12,000 hours on the clock, it is time to consider an engine rebuild. So, this Mog has used up 9.5% of its useful life! For those of us that are car geeks, I do have the factory build sheet in my documentation package that shows all the options it came with. I am not looking for "blind bidders" here - I expect someone to come here to Boulder, CO to see this thing up close and personally before buying. Also, training on shifting the transmission is highly recommended. How often does one get a chance to buy a "good as new" 40-year old Unimog? Contact me here, and I'll give you my phone so we can chat, thanks!

Mercedes-Benz C350 Plug-In Hybrid promises 20 miles EV range, 5.9 seconds to 60
Mon, Jan 12 2015Mercedes-Benz has introduced its first hybrid C-Class to the US market with the new C350 Plug-In Hybrid. Despite its fuel-saving purpose, though, this C is not short on firepower. MB paired a 208-horsepower, 258-pound-foot, turbocharged four-cylinder with a 80-hp, 251-lb-ft electric motor for a potent overall output of 275 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. That translates a 0-60 time of just 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 130 miles per hour. For those that aren't interested in such frivolous numbers, though, the C-Class can still impress in more environmentally friendly ways. It can cover 20 miles to a charge and will hit speeds of up to 80 miles per hour (although not likely at the same time). Naturally, fuel economy figures aren't available at this early stage. Beyond those powertrain changes, the C350 Plug-In is still the same relaxed, luxurious baby S-Class, with a class-leading interior that should really benefit from the quiet ride provided by an electric powertrain. Take a look at our full gallery of live images of the new C-Class hybrid, straight from the Detroit's Cobo Hall. F1 title fight gets closer | 2016 US Grand Prix recap
Mon, Oct 24 2016We ran into an old friend at the US Grand Prix: an on-form Lewis Hamilton. Reliability and proper clutch actuation helped the Mercedes-AMG Petronas driver resurrect the kind of performance we haven't seen since July at the German Grand Prix. After demolishing the previous qualifying record around the Circuit of the Americas, he put the field in his mirrors as soon as the lights went out, was never bothered by anyone behind, and crossed the finish line 4.5 seconds ahead of teammate Nico Rosberg. The drive was exactly what Hamilton needed to keep his molecule-thin Championship hopes alive. Rosberg, however, did exactly what he needed to do as well by finishing second. The German had a sketchier path to the checkered flag than Hamilton, getting pushed back to the third at the start by Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo. Worse, Ricciardo appeared to have the pace to keep Hamilton honest ahead and hold Rosberg behind. Red Bull and Mercedes matched one another's pit stops, and it was clear the German would need more help to pass the Aussie. Rosberg didn't have to make his own luck, Ricciardo's teammate Max Verstappen made the luck for him. Ricciardo pitted on Lap 26, ceding second position on track to Rosberg. On Lap 30, Verstappen's gearbox failed while headed down the back straight. The Dutch teenager said the team told him to try to get the car back to the pits, so he dawdled through a few corners before following more team orders to pull over and park. Verstappen's parking spot and bad gearbox meant marshals couldn't push the car off the track, they needed to use a crane. That brought out a Virtual Safety Car, slowing the whole race down and allowing Rosberg to run a longer stint while losing less time on old tires. When the German came in for new tires on Lap 31 he emerged ahead of Ricciardo, and they ran that way to the end of the race, much to Ricciardo's disappointment. Sebastian Vettel claimed fourth for Ferrari, a placing perhaps due only to Verstappen and Kimi Raikkonen retiring from the race. An otherwise anonymous weekend for the scuderia called attention to itself on race day when Raikkonen had to call it a day after a botched pit stop, and Vettel couldn't make any impression on the teams ahead. Fernando Alonso rode home to a brilliant fifth for McLaren. During the first stint while rummaging around outside the top ten, the Spaniard complained about his lack of pace. By Lap 15 Alonso was tenth, on Lap 34 he was eighth.
Nissan edges out Tesla for most ZEV credits sold in California
Wed, Oct 22 2014When it comes to California zero-emissions vehicle (ZEV) credits last year, Nissan was selling and Mercedes-Benz was buying. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) put out its ZEV-credits numbers for the year that ended September 30, which is why we now know that Nissan, maker of the battery-electric Leaf, transferred 663.6 ZEV credits out of its account last year. That just edged out the 650.195 credits that Tesla sold. Chrysler's Fiat affiliate was a distant third, but its limited-production Fiat 500E was still able to generate some ZEV credits and then transfer out 235.2 of them. We don't know how much the buyers paid for these credits, since those details are kept private. It's an ever-changing rulebook over at CARB, anyway. On the flip side, Mercedes-Benz had to buy 663.6 ZEV credits in order to comply with clean vehicle-sales mandates in the most populous US state, indicative of the German automaker's gas-guzzling tendencies. Honda has cars that get better fuel economy than your average Benz, but its plug-in vehicles represent just a fraction of total sales and so it had to shell out for 542.5 ZEV credits. Chrysler-Fiat basically tread water, since the 237.8 ZEV credits it required for compliance canceled out gains on the other side of the ledger. Those Dodge Ram pickup trucks don't exactly help matters. Last year, Tesla sold the most ZEV credits while GM purchased the most. Overall, Californians bought about 3.5 million vehicles for the year that ended September 30, including 38,000 battery-electric vehicles, 30,000 plug-in hybrids and 570,000 conventional hybrids. The longstanding ZEV program means that California now has more than 100,000 ZEVs on its roads. Read this for more details on ZEV credit transfers in California.
