Lewis Hamilton's 2010 McLaren Mercedes F1 car going up for auction

Tue, May 18 2021

Lewis Hamilton has been racing in Formula 1 since 2007, and the multiple-championship-winner has won a lot of races. But none of the driver's former race-winning cars has ever come up for public auction. That will change this summer when RM Sotheby's auctions off a McLaren F1 racer that Hamilton drove during the 2010 season. The McLaren-Mercedes MP4-25A racer is chassis number 1, and features its as-raced silver-and-red Vodafone livery. Hamilton won the Turkish Grand Prix, the Canadian Grand Prix and the Belgian Grand Prix that season. The auction will take place in conjunction with the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on July 17. The sale is being held on Saturday afternoon, just ahead of Sprint Qualifying Race. The Formula 1 race takes place the next day, on Sunday. In a unique — and fitting — twist, the car actually will be lapping the track at speed during the bidding. Whether that will juice the final sale price remains to be seen; the pre-sale auction estimate for the car is $5–$7 million. This content is hosted by a third party. 2017 Mercedes E-Class spied nearly camo-free [w/video]

Fri, Nov 13 2015

With these spy shots of the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class we can see the circle is nearly complete: once it arrives, Mercedes will sell the same car in three different lengths. To quote our spy photographers, "The new E-Class is a smaller S-Class. Of if you rather like it the other way around, a bigger C-Class." The E-Class makes its debut at the 2016 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in a couple of months. Being the latest reveal it will also bringing a thick folio of Daimler's technology with it, such as Vehicle-to-X communication, remote control parking via a smartphone app, adaptive cruise control that sets the speed based on road signs, an air bladder that pushes front-seat occupants towards the center of the car before a side impact, an audio system that triggers your eardrum's reflexes to prevent hearing damage in a crash, and NFC-based unlock and vehicle start using your smartphone. For starters. Good luck picking it out from its stablemates, though. The video below captures the car in motion. This content is hosted by a third party. Daimler employees can set email to auto-delete during vacation

Mon, 18 Aug 2014

The Internet has shrunk the world in terms of the way people communicate by making it possible to send an email from Oslo and have it show up in Cleveland almost immediately. But that instant contact has wrecked the work/life balance for many. They get home from a long day at the office, yet they can never fully put their feet up and relax because another hour or more of checking and replying to emails awaits. However, German automotive giant Daimler is putting an end to that churn, at least while its employees are on vacation.
About 100,000 Daimler employees in Germany are eligible to opt-in to a new program called Mail on Holiday, according to The Atlantic. When the workers go on vacation, they can switch it on, and the service auto-deletes all of their incoming email. "Our employees should relax on holiday and not read work-related emails," said Wilfried Porth, board member for human resources, to The Financial Times as cited by The Atlantic.
Mail on Holiday puts a thumb on the scale of work/life balance in favor of a little more free time. The system means that Daimler employees shouldn't even be tempted to check their email on vacation because there's nothing there - and it also avoids them coming back from a relaxing holiday only to find a mailbox packed full of hundreds of unread messages. These days, people are absolutely obsessed with their work, often to the detriment of their health, not to mention spending time with their families and friends. On one hand, Mail on Holiday sounds like the sort of vacation breakthrough we'd need to truly unplug and unwind, but on the other hand, it makes our skin crawl just thinking about the lack of communication.
