My wife's Birthday present is for sale as she has not been driving the car.

This is a very nice ex-Florida 560 SL. I bought this car from a friend that owned it since 2/28/00 and drove it less than 8000 miles in 13 years! It was garage kept all those years.

The car was shipped to CT late 2012 and put in storage until early spring 2013 when I commissioned a full suspension rebuild. All suspension rubbers and shocks were replaced. Steering linkages are all new and all front end bushings were replaced. Most of the rear bushings are also new, including the differential mount. Drive shaft coupler, engine mounts (new), transmissions mounts are all good. Most of the rubber parts and shocks were aged even though the car was not driven. Essentially any SL of this vintage will require these repairs regardless of the mileage if they were never performed. This runs close to $2K in repairs. With all these new parts the car drives absolutely marvelous. It drives like a MB SL ought to drive...rattle free, straight, and tight. Probably as close to new as it you can get.

I also had a new convertible top (Top Grade German Haarz Cloth) installed. I choose a dark blue top (originally black) as it contrasts the white/ grey combo nicely. Replacement cost was $1,200.00. The hardtop in white is very nice and comes with a dolly.

Transmission was flushed and Mobil 1 ATF was used to fill it up. It shifts very smooth with no signs of clunkiness or sluggishness.

There is NO RUST on the car as it came from Florida. I showed a notorious rust spot at the jack point to illustrate zero rust.

The exterior is very nice. Paint is virtually scratch and dent (don't see any) free. Interior is also very nice but shows some "patina". No rips or cracks in the upholstery. The leather is still pliable. Wood on the dashboard and console is nice.

Only the a/c is left to be serviced. I did not bother with this as it was to be our summer only car and my wife has not been using it.

Clock works, all electricals work, radio is ALPINE AM/FM/CD player with removable face plate. Antenna is electric. Factory tools are present. Battery is new.

Only lights that are "on" are the washer fluid light and the ABS light will kick on at over 9 mph. I have to clean/ replace the sending unit in the washer bottle, and a simple cleaning of the ABS tone wheels behind the brake rotors should take care of the ABS light. This is a common service item but the ABS works fine and it does not stay on all the time (you can Google this on the web and confirm the service required to fix this problem. I will fix these two (2) issues in the next few days.

As with any SL or MB of the 80s for that matter, the mirror covers in the visor break at the hinges. I have the visors and decent mirrors (with weak hinges for the flip open cover) but I removed the visors altogether because they are very low and obstruct my view.

The engine runs smooth with no unusual sounds.

Unfortunately my wife's b'day surprise has to go.

The car is in CT where is can be inspected or driven. Any questions, feel free to call me at 203-415-6151 (no dealers please).

Happy Bidding.

Clear CT Title in hand. Private sale. Cash, MO, or certified check for payment. Paypal deposit of $300.00 required within 24 hrs.

Feel free to ask relevant questions.

How tariffs in China could cause a meltdown in the American South

Sun, Aug 25 2019

While BMW is clearly a German company, the crossovers that are exceedingly important to it are actually made in Spartanburg, South Carolina. And more than that, the Spartanburg plant (physically located in the town of Greer) is where the corporate know-how and capability for those vehicles is concentrated. These are the vehicles – specifically, the BMW X3, X4, X5, X6, X7 – that drove record growth for the company in 2018, according to BMW. But whatÂ’s most notable about BMW Group Plant Spartanburg, given current events, is that according to the U.S. Department of Commerce it was the largest automotive exporter by value for the fifth year running in 2018. ThatÂ’s worth emphasizing: largest automotive exporter by value. Not GM. Not Ford. BMW. And where might one assume that more than a few of those X vehicles are shipped to? China. Some 360 miles southwest of Spartanburg is Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, Inc., in in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. It started building vehicles in 1997. Since then, Daimler AG has invested in excess of $5.5 billion in the facility. It manufactures the crossover now known as the GLE, formerly the ML-Class. It also makes the GLE coupe and GLS. Daimler describes the Tuscaloosa facility as “the traditional home of SUV production” for those vehicles. When it reported its global 2018 sales, Daimler noted that on a global basis SUVs account “for more than a third of all Mercedes-Benz sales.” According to the Chinese finance ministry, on December 15th the Chinese government will impose a 25% tariff on automobiles (and a 5% tariff on auto parts) from the U.S. Certainly this is going to have a direct effect on the sales of vehicles that are manufactured in the U.S. and exported to China. BMW and Mercedes are going to take it on the chin for the vehicles that they make in plants that they invested in so heavily in the U.S. Which could potentially mean that people in places like Greer, South Carolina, and Vance, Alabama, are going to find themselves in the crosshairs of the combatants. Soo too could Lincoln, which produces vehicles in places like Louisville, Kentucky (Navigator), Chicago, Illinois (Aviator) and Flat Rock, Michigan (Continental). Although the Tesla Gigafactory 3 is rapidly nearing completion in Shanghai, it is worth noting that vehicles built in Fremont, California, are being sold in China in numbers that donÂ’t make Musk unhappy.

'The best Lewis' Hamilton faces resurgent Ferrari in F1

Wed, Apr 5 2017

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Lewis Hamilton has raised his game but whether the Mercedes driver can deny Ferrari a second successive win of the season in China this weekend remains to be seen. On paper, the triple world champion is still the man to beat -- the most successful driver by far in Shanghai with four wins to date. "Lewis is the best Lewis that I've seen in the last four years, both on and off the track," said Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff after the Briton started on pole and finished second to Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel in the Australian season-opener. "He has become a pillar of this team and he proved that in Melbourne." But Vettel is leading the championship, the first time a non-Mercedes driver has done that since he took his fourth title with Red Bull in 2013, and once-dominant Mercedes have a fight on their hands. Mercedes, who have taken both the drivers and constructors' titles for the last three years, have won four of the last five races in China. As Melbourne showed, however, past form may count for little in a season of sweeping rule change. "If you think you are going to cruise to victory in the future, based on a track record of success, you'll be proven wrong very quickly," said Wolff. "Australia was a weekend full of lessons, now we go to China ready and excited for another battle." Ferrari have not started a season with consecutive wins since 2004 at the peak of the Michael Schumacher era, the Italian team taking 15 victories from 18 races that season. Vettel's win in Australia ended a victory drought for Ferrari stretching back to September 2015, and drew rare praise from company chairman Sergio Marchionne, but they must now prove they can be genuine contenders. "You really have to go step by step," said Vettel. "It's good to know that we have a great car but it's just the beginning: new regulations, new generations of cars so there will be a lot of progress." The cars this year are longer and wider, sporting fatter tires and more swept-back bodywork as part of a rules shake-up aimed at making them faster, more spectacular to watch and harder to drive. But overtaking has also become more difficult, with Australia raising concern about the lack of real moves. The long straights and wide sweeps of the Shanghai circuit saw 128 passes last year, more than at any other track, and should provide a more definitive verdict.

Lewis Hamilton on pole in France, Sebastian Vettel only seventh

Sat, Jun 22 2019

LE CASTELLET, France — Lewis Hamilton seized pole position for the French Grand Prix in track record time as Mercedes, chasing their 10th successive win, swept the front row of the grid in dominant fashion on Saturday. The Formula One world championship leader was 0.286 seconds quicker than team mate Valtteri Bottas. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc qualified third with team mate Sebastian Vettel a distant seventh on a distinctly off day for the German. The pole, in a time of one minute 28.319 seconds, was a record-extending 86th of Hamilton's career and his third of the season. "I'm happy that I got the potential out of the car, the team did a fantastic job," said five-times world champion Hamilton, last year's winner from pole at Le Castellet's Paul Ricard circuit. "We've just been chipping away at improving the set-up of the car," added the Briton, who is 29 points clear of Bottas after seven races — all won by the pair. Hamilton also triumphed in the last two of 2018. Bottas was fastest in the second phase of qualifying but could not match Hamilton's sizzling pace when it mattered in the final shoot-out. "The wind changed direction and there was a couple of corners my line didn't work and I had to work it out but Lewis had a better lap," said the Finn. Mercedes have looked to be in a class of their own all weekend, with Hamilton or Bottas fastest in every practice session with Leclerc, rather than Vettel, consistently the best of the rest. Vettel struggled, backing out of his first hot lap and then failing to string together all the sectors smoothly on his second attempt. "I don't know what happened, I lost so much momentum there was no point to finish that lap," said the German, who starts behind the Renault-powered McLarens of British rookie Lando Norris (fifth) and Spaniard Carlos Sainz (sixth). "Some laps it felt good and others it didn't. I didn't get the best out of the car but it was difficult for me, but some laps I didn't have he grip I had before." Vettel's time of 1:29.799 was eighth tenths of a second slower than Leclerc's best. Leclerc, who starts with Red Bull's Max Verstappen alongside, asked the team over the radio to get Vettel to speed up but the Monegasque said his lap had not been compromised. Australian Daniel Ricciardo starts eighth for Renault and Red Bull's Pierre Gasly lines up ninth for his home race with Italian Antonio Giovinazzi 10th for Alfa Romeo.
