History:

Manufactured for almost two decades between 1971 and 1989, Mercedes' highly regarded type R107 SL Roadster has made history in a big way. Being an advanced design, it still looks contemporary today and holds the place of honor as the most successful open-air motorcar ever built by Benz. In 1980, Mercedes-Benz revamped its SL lineup of sporting luxury convertibles with the introduction of the 380SL. The 380SL, so-named for its 3.8-liter V-8, was a further development of the R107 chassis, a heady mix of V-8 power, refined luxury, and sporty underpinnings, and it was as a very popular model during its run in the U.S.

With 9,926 cars were manufactured in 1982, the fully equipped 380SL is not only much more agile, it also is a real gas miser. Advanced primarily in the areas of fuel consumption and efficiency, a newly designed and calibrated 4-speed automatic transmission to further enhanced distance driving, a space age with all aluminum engine, to this day the lightest V8 ever installed in a Mercedes automobile.

The 380SL ended production in 1985. The car’s values typically lagged the earlier 450SL and the later 560SL, mainly because the 3.8-liter engine was slightly less powerful. However, the power difference between the 450SL/560SL and 380SL weren't as dramatic as the price discrepancy would suggest. As such, the Mercedes-Benz 380SL is a fine choice today as a collectible 1980s convertible.

2019 Autoblog Technology of the Year finalists revealed

Fri, Jan 4 2019

Every fall, we line up a range of new models with the latest and most compelling automotive technology from the past year. We test everything from semi-autonomous systems like Tesla's Autopilot to trick suspension setups like the Multimatic spool-valve shocks on the Chevy Colorado ZR2. We spend months paring down the list to a small group of contenders. After testing, dinner and healthy debate, we tally up the votes and name our winner. For Autoblog's 2019 Technology of the Year Award, our three finalists are the Cadillac CT6 with Super Cruise, the Infiniti QX50 with Variable Compression Turbo and the Mercedes-AMG E 53 with EQ Boost. Super Cruise is an advanced SAE Level 2 semi-autonomous system, though Cadillac (unlike some of its rivals) is reluctant to push that point. Cadillac would like you to think of this as an advanced driver assistance feature rather than a semi-autonomous system. Super Cruise allows completely hands-free highway driving. Thanks to a driver-facing camera, the system forces the driver to keep his or her eyes on the road even if hands are off the wheel. Although the CT6 is being discontinued, look for Super Cruise to make its way to other Cadillacs soon. VC Turbo is a little more complicated. Basically, Infiniti's 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four can vary the compression ratio on the fly. In general, turbocharged engines are more efficient than naturally-aspirated engines when on boost, but can perform worse at low revs. VC Turbo allows for a best-of-both-worlds situation, increasing the compression at low revs and backing it off once the turbo spools up. The best part is that it does so seamlessly, with only a dash readout letting you know what's going on under the hood. Our third finalist is the EQ Boost 48-volt system in the Mercedes-AMG E 53. Like VC Turbo, EQ Boost does a lot just beneath the surface. Mercedes has developed a new turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six and paired it with a small electric motor. While the car can't run on electricity alone, the motor helps improve both efficiency and performance, smoothing shifts and filling in low-end torque before the turbos spool up. Think torque fill, similar to a McLaren P1. Who can complain about better fuel economy and more torque? Look for the 48-volt system to make its way into most of the Mercedes-Benz lineup. The winner will be revealed next week on Autoblog, and we'll present the award Jan. 15 at the Detroit Auto Show. Related Video:

Mercedes-Benz releases US-spec 2014 Sprinter details

Mon, 06 May 2013

Last week, Mercedes-Benz released the details for the updated 2013 Sprinter intended for global markets, but this week it has announced what changes are being made to the US-spec version of the van for the 2014 model year, including the Freightliner model. As expected, most of the changes made to the European model will be present on the 2014 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter when it goes on sale in the US, which is expected to be this fall.
The biggest difference between the Sprinter announced last week and the one headed to our shores is what is found under the hood. While European Sprinters will come with diesel engines and offer the availability of a supercharged four-cylinder gasoline or CNG engine, US Sprinters will still offer the 3.0-liter V6 BlueTEC diesel. This year's Sprinter now comes standard with a new base engine, the 2.1-liter four-cylinder BlueTEC diesel. This smaller engine will produce 161 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque, and will be paired to a seven-speed automatic transmission; the optional 3.0 V6 puts out 188 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque, and will be mated to a six-speed auto.
Fuel economy for the new Sprinter has not been announced, but Mercedes-Benz has made numerous changes with the goal of improving efficiency. To this end you'll find a new, low-friction rear axle and the optimization for the generator, fuel pump and power steering pump.

Jay Leno drives the incredible Mercedes-Benz C111-II concept

Tue, Oct 20 2015

You might think that Jay Leno has driven it all, but there are a few vehicles so rare that getting behind the wheel is a special experience, even for him. This week on Jay Leno's Garage, the comedian has one of those unique experiences by taking a ride in a 1970 Mercedes-Benz C111-II concept on loan from the Mercedes Classics Center. First unveiled in 1969, the C111 concept featured an in-vogue wedge shape, gullwing doors, and a mid-mounted three-rotor engine, and it seemed like the supercar of the future. This C111-II went even further in 1970 with tweaked styling and a four-rotor powerplant behind the driver. A V8 eventually replaced the experimental mill, but that switch is also part of the reason this one is still on the road today. Leno gets the full history about Mercedes' original plans for the C111 project, but obviously the real highlight is the rare drive in this vintage concept. He clearly relishes the experience of finally getting behind the wheel of this piece of auto history, one of the few automotive dreams he hadn't yet fulfilled.
