Offered for sale is an exceptionally clean, honest and solid 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL finished in rare and wonderfully era specific Dark Olive (DB 291) with a Black (DB 040) hard top and hubcaps and a Black leather interior. Having been garaged and well cared for its entire life – never exposed to the elements – the car’s undercarriage is completely solid, original and free of any harmful corrosion, which can also be said of the car’s body which is entirely straight, retaining even panel fits and gaps. A two-owner car, its first owner drove it until 1977, when it was purchased by the principal of a Mercedes specialty shop in Bethlehem, PA. He would keep the car for nearly 37 years, using it strictly as a weekend driver and of course keeping it maintained using only OEM parts. In recent years his advancing age yielded less and less use of the car, which eventually prompted our being able to acquire it earlier this year. Not surprisingly, the car is mechanically sound, its original engine firing up easily, idling consistently and pulling strongly and smoothly through each of the original automatic transmission’s gears. The car drives and brakes straight and true, the suspension is tight and the ride quality is entirely comfortable, whether cruising down the highway or winding through the canyons. One of the 280SL’s most appreciated aspects is that they are truly mechanically modern enough for everyday use on today’s roads while maintaining all of that wonderful vintage look and appeal. The car is also aesthetically beautiful, the Dark Olive finish consistent and clean, marred only by minor imperfections, none of which are significant enough to appear in and of the photographs. All of the glass and chrome is in excellent original condition, save for a very soft impression in the passenger side rear bumper that’s difficult to see in photographs. The car’s original Black hub-capped wheels are in excellent condition, wrapped in new Pirelli P4000 tires. The car’s interior is equally as clean, the leather seats having been recently reupholstered using all the correct materials and patterns. The carpets and interior panels are both in good original condition, as is the dash and wood trim. The car retains its Becker radio and comes with a dealer installed Frigiking AC unit that is functional, albeit somewhat ineffective. Rarely used, the hard top is in great shape and the car’s black canvas soft-top is free of any rips or tears. This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a consistently appreciating Mercedes 280SL with all the right things going for it: beautiful cosmetics, rare color combination, solid original undercarriage, strong original engine and sound mechanicals. Mercedes-AMG chairman shoots down notion of LaFerrari-fighter

Mercedes-AMG chairman Tobias Moers took a sip of water and pondered the question. It was a loaded one: Would his company consider building a hyper car to rival extreme machines like the Porsche 918 and Ferrari LaFerrari? The short answer: not right now. "Unfortunately, if we find we should do something like that, there's no capacity – there's no engineering capacity to do that – in the near future. So there's no chance for us [to do that]," he told Autoblog in an interview at the Los Angeles Auto Show. AMG has capitalized on the rebounding global economy and strong demand for performance cars in the United States, China, and Europe, its most critical markets. It employs about 1,400 people, an astronomical leap from the 120 people who worked at AMG when Moers started in 1994. AMG also announced plans this week to increase V12 engine production due to high demand. Production will move from the AMG base in Affalterbach to another Daimler site in Mannheim, Germany. The switch will free up capacity for AMG to build more V8 engines in Affalterbach. Despite all of this growth, Moers said the company has priorities more pressing than a hypercar, like adding more extreme variants of its existing models. It also revealed the SL63 and SL65 AMG models this week in Los Angeles. "We're going to increase the family of the GT (shown above)," he said. "We're really busy with the next-generation E-Class, which will be the biggest step we've ever made from one generation E-Class to the next one regarding driving dynamics." Moers also says a supercar doesn't make financial sense for AMG, though halo cars are traditionally done for brand building, rather than the bottom line. "We're not coming to that point. I think a hypercar is always bad on a business case," he said. An AMG supercar is one of the industry's favorite rumors, and Moers admitted his customers are interested in the proposition. "In the recent past, I always thought like AMG ... is not in that level to be accepted in a hypercar, super, super, super sports car segment," he said. GAYDON, England — After decades of ups and downs, British carmaker Aston Martin Lagonda is charting a more efficient and profitable way forward, leaning on technology from shareholder Mercedes-Benz to make the costly leap to electric vehicles (EVs). Less than two years after billionaire Lawrence Stroll drove to the rescue of James Bond's car brand of choice, Aston Martin has undergone a manufacturing makeover to lift margins and help it become more like rival Ferrari. Stroll, Aston Martin's largest shareholder and executive chairman, who is also an avid fan of Ferrari, says after vehicle sales jumped 82% in 2021 the carmaker's transformation to long-term profitability is well under way, with new cars coming and funding secured through 2025. But analysts say Aston Martin, which has gone bust seven times since it was founded in 1913 and has flirted with death as often as Agent 007, is still burning through piles of cash. Some question its ability to generate Ferrari-like sales to fund the vast cost of electrification. "It's precarious and it is possible for this company to go bust," said Redburn equity research analyst Charles Coldicott. "I don't think it's a controversial thing to say even though Aston wouldn't like to hear it." Asked to comment on perceptions of a shaky future, an Aston Martin spokesman reiterated Stroll's view that the carmaker is well on the way to long-term profitability and that it has adequate access to cash. On a tour of the carmaker's Gaydon factory, Tobias Moers, formerly head of Mercedes' high-performance AMG brand and Aston Martin chief executive since August 2020, rattles off a list of moves including cutting one of two assembly lines and bringing more bespoke items like seats in-house. Perhaps the biggest shift has been to focus on higher-value customer-driven and customized orders — a big part of Ferrari's success — rather than over-producing and churning out sports cars wholesale, which then had to be discounted. "When I came in, the company was manufacturing-dominated instead of engineering-led, which for an auto luxury business is insane," Moers said. "In a company this size, you need maximum flexibility and agility." Moers has cut Aston Martin's inventory to 600 sports cars from 2,000 — its cars sell for an average of around 150,000 pounds ($195,750) — and customized orders now account for 50% of sales versus 6% when he joined the firm. At that point, the carmaker was in trouble after a disastrous 2018 public listing.

What will become of Maybach? That question has been rattling around the halls of Daimler headquarters in Stuttgart for some time now. But all questions will be answered, and answered soon: according to reports, the German automaker is currently evaluating prototypes and propositions for its top-end marque, and will make its decision next month.
So, what are the options? On the one hand, Daimler could kill the Maybach brand altogether. It was a notion ill conceived and even more poorly executed, taking an old platform and building a new flagship atop it. In that way, it was sort of like the Chrysler Crossfire, only far more costly to both the buyer and manufacturer. On the other hand, Daimler could opt for the long-time-coming proposition of contracting the production (and possibly much of the development) of a new generation of Maybachs to Aston Martin.
