2017 Mercedes-AMG C63 is about to get official [UPDATE]
Wed, Aug 19 2015UPDATE: As predicted, Mercedes followed up with official information and a full set of images of the C63. Click through to read the lot of it. Let's not kid ourselves; we already know what the 2017 Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe looks like. The company has been dropping teasers like they're hot, in video and photo form. We caught a spied glance of the whole car very recently, too. And we saw the base C-Class Coupe in all of its official glory just last week. Still, Mercedes knows that the new C63 is likely to be a hot topic with the enthusiast crowd (that's you and me, Bub), so it's dropping as many breadcrumbs as it can between now and the fully fleshed out information. This afternoon that means this first official image of the car: a double-fantasy of German speed in stirring red and striking silver. Big 14-spoke wheels ground each corner of this flowing coupe shape, with air-gulping intakes, a pointillistic metallic grille, and LED-strip headlights dominating the front end. Mercedes has promised us that more information about its performance-focused C-Class is upcoming. We're going to update this very post with that knowledge just as soon as we have it, so stay tuned. Daimler ponders partnerships with Apple, Google
Mon, Aug 24 2015Daimler Chairman Dieter Zetsche is willing to consider joint ventures with tech giants like Apple and Google. Don't expect the automaker's vehicles to become just another platform for their software, though. In an interview with a German magazine, the chairman admits "different types" of partnerships could be possible, according to Reuters. As vehicles become increasingly connected, greater expertise is necessary in creating their software. The changing market is an opportunity for tech companies to enter the auto industry. "Google and Apple want to provide system software for cars and bring this entire ecosystem around Apple and Google into the vehicle," Zetsche said, according to Reuters. "That can be interesting for both sides." Although, he was clear no deals had happened, yet. For automakers, the danger of this cooperation is for a vehicle to be just a physical device that runs the software. "We don't want to become contractors who have no direct content with customers any more and supply hardware to third parties," he said in the interview. Zetsche has been working out how to create this balance for a while. Earlier this year, he said that some partnerships with Silicon Valley firms could be helpful. However, data privacy remains a major concern, especially in the wake of multiple vehicle hacks in recent months. In the chairman's opinion, a Mercedes-Benz shouldn't just protect its occupants physically but also their personal information. Related Video:
2017 North American Car, Truck, and Utility of the Year entries announced
Wed, Jul 6 2016Over 40 vehicles will compete for the 2017 North American Car, Truck, and Utility of the Year awards. If that name looks a little strange, it's because the competition added a third category. In years past, pickup trucks, crossovers, SUVs, commercial vans, and minivans competed for the same award. That's why there were occasionally weird comparisons, like last year's competition between the Volvo XC90 and Nissan Titan XD. The new format separates pickups and commercial vans into the truck contest and CUVs, SUVs, and minivans into the utility competition. A complete list of eligible vehicles is below, but here are a few highlights. For one, the entire list of entries has a luxurious lean. Of the 43 vehicles, nearly half of them are from premium brands. There are two eligible Bentleys – the Bentayga and Mulsanne – the Rolls-Royce Dawn, Jaguar F-Pace, Audi Q7, and the Mercedes-Benz GLS-, E-, and S-Class Maybach. The performance ranks are lofty, too, with the Audi R8, Acura NSX, Alfa Romeo Giulia, Mercedes SL- and SLC-Class, Porsche 718, and F-150 Raptor. The mainstream entries are just as comprehensive. From the Chrysler Pacifica to the Chevrolet Cruze to the Fiat 124 Spider to the Mitsubishi Mirage, NACTOY has covered an enormous price range with this year's contestants. Of course, these are only the eligible vehicles. They'll need to run through three rounds of judging, starting in September at NACTOY's traditional Hell, MI, test drive. The Canadian and American journalists involved in the judging will announce this year's nine finalists – three in each category – on December 6.
