For the 2013 model year Mercedes-Benz replaces the G55 AMG with a new Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG swapping the outdated power plant for something more modern. This is a move that we expected considering Mercedes commitment to still producing the retro G-Class. We're sure it will be a success too, considering the outgoing model's popularity with the rich, the famous and the mafia!

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG gets the AMG-fettled 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine delivering 544 hp and torque of 560 lb-ft. These are 44 hp and 44 lb-ft gains over the G55. Engineers have coupled this with AMG's Speedshift Plus, 7-speed automatic transmission. This means 0-100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds and a 209km/h limited top speed.

Mercedes-Benz is keen to push the G63 AMG's fuel consumption figures, now reduced by 13 percent. This is thanks, in part, to the seven-speed automatic gearbox which features three drive modes and an automatic rev-matching function for downshifting. Those modes include "Controlled Efficiency" mode with a stop/start function, "C" mode for smooth acceleration and early gear changes, a Sport (S) and Manual (M) mode.

The suspension/damper settings in the AMG sports chassis have been adjusted to ensure a more comfortable ride. The wheels and brakes are also completely new. The Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG runs on new AMG split 5-spoke alloy wheels as standard. They measure 9.5 x 20 with a titanium-grey high-sheen finish are come fitted with 275/50 R 20 tires.

The AMG high-performance brakes have perforated brake discs measuring 14.8 x 1.42 inches at the front and 13 x 0.79 inches at the rear. At the front is a six-piston fixed-caliper system taken from the ML 63 AMG the rear gets a single-piston floating-caliper system both finished in red.

The Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG gets a high-gloss black "twin-blade" radiator grille with four chrome inserts. The AMG bumper features three generously dimensioned openings as airflow inlets and new LED daytime running lamps are fitted below the bi-xenon headlamps. Fender flares, stainless-steel running boards and side protective strips with stainless-steel inserts are carried over from the outgoing model.

Inside you'll find a new instrument panel and state-of-the-art infotainment systems, the G63 AMG gets a color TFT screen and white-light AMG sills on all doors. Surfaces get designo leather upholstery with fluted leather door panelling with optional AMG carbon, designo Champagne white lacquer or designo light brown satin poplar.

The G-Class G63 AMG is exactly what you would expect out of a Mercedes-Benz. It's decadently opulent, meticulously engineered and unapologetically grandiose.

Frankfurt Motor Show Notes: Why Jaguar decided to build an SUV

Wed, Sep 16 2015

It was inevitable. Jaguar had to make an SUV, and that notion became reality this week with the debut of the F-Pace, an all-wheel-drive five-seater that will launch in the United States next spring. Some purists may cringe. But in an era when Porsche, Bentley, Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce, Aston Martin, and other traditional luxury brands are all building or (planning to build) SUVs, Jaguar had to evolve. While it seems like a leap for Jaguar to make an SUV, longtime design director Ian Callum said it's been in the works for years. "The first time I was asked the question was when I arrived 16 years ago," he said. So in 1999 (and probably well before that), Jaguar was already thinking SUV. What took so long? "It wasn't a priority," Callum said. Jaguar was concentrating on fixing its existing lineup, which was pockmarked with holes and poorly selling products, like the X-Type. Along the way, Jaguar and sister brand Land Rover were sold by Ford to Indian conglomerate Tata Motors. Flash forward several years, and Jaguar and Land Rover are both experiencing a resurgence in the United States and around the world. Jaguar's lineup is flush with the E-Type's modern successor, the F-Type, plus a new version of the XF. The XJ received a 2016 freshening, and the smaller XE sedan is on the way. Jaguar put its house in order as other factors conspired to make a crossover timely. Fuel prices stayed relatively low, and consumers in the US and China remained steadfast in their love for utility vehicles of all stripes. Making a Jaguar SUV became a priority. "The world was telling us in no uncertain terms this is what they wanted," Callum said. "Not to be in the sector would be a little naive for the sake of purity." Jaguar proved its intent two years ago when it revealed the C-X17 crossover concept at Frankfurt, and the final production model is close to the prototype's striking looks. "I thought we managed to maintain that spirit," Callum said. It's a true Jaguar, with cues from the F-Type, 1968 XJ, and other famous models. Who would have thought Jaguar would make an SUV? "I certainly didn't," Callum admitted. But the F-Pace is here. If Callum is okay with it, purists can be, too. Quick Hits Opel retrenches for 2016 and beyond Opel used the Frankfurt show to display its new generation of the Astra, a critical vehicle line for the German division of General Motors.

Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe launches with DTM-styled Edition 1 [w/video]

Wed, Sep 16 2015

It's not as flashy or fantastical as the concept cars, big luxury cars, and exotics being shown here at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, but the Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe still gets us really excited. That's because it's a semi-attainable production car; like, we'll actually get to drive it, and soon. The C63 Coupe builds upon the gorgeous, two-door C-Class that also made its debut at the Frankfurt show. It's powered by the same twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter V8 as the C63 sedan, producing either 469 or 503 horsepower, depending on the model. If the sedan's driving dynamics are anything to go on, the C63 Coupe ought to be a total riot. For the occasion of its premiere, Mercedes brought the C63 Edition 1 to Frankfurt, wearing a unique paint job that mimics the look of the automaker's recently unveiled DTM racer. The Edition 1 rolls on unique wheels – measuring 19 inches in front and 20 inches out back – and comes with unique aerodynamic enhancements, more gloss and chrome trim, and racing buckets inside. Edition 1 or not, the C63 Coupe is a car we're very happy to welcome to the world. We can't wait to test one.

Mercedes-Maybach Pullman stretches its way to Geneva

Wed, Feb 18 2015

Mercedes-Benz is known the world over for producing luxury automobiles, but even among Benzes there's a hierarchy. The S-Class sits at the top of the Mercedes range, the Maybach at the top of the S-Class, and what you see here sits at the top of the Maybach line. It's the new Pullman limousine, and it arrives on the 50th anniversary of the original. Stretching a massive 21.3 feet, the new Mercedes-Maybach Pullman is even longer than the previous Maybach 62 by a full foot, and a good 3.5 feet longer than the standard-wheelbase Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, or two feet longer than the G63 AMG 6x6. In other terms, it's over a foot longer than the Rolls-Royce Phantom EWB, and the better part of a yard longer than even the Cadillac Escalade ESV. Heck, you could just about fit Benz's other flagship, the Mercedes-AMG GT, inside the new Pullman's 14.5-foot wheelbase. As if that's not enough, it also stands 3.9 inches higher than a standard S-Class to the benefit of its imposing presence and interior space. Should you be so fortunate as to be graced with an invitation to step inside, you'd find an interior entirely clad in leather with four seats: two recliners and two fold-down seats facing backwards. Those principal rear seats can recline between 19 and 43.5 degrees and offer an extensive array of individual adjustments to cater just-so to the occupants' individual preferences. Ingress and egress are enabled by larger rear doors that open in front of – instead of next to – those rear seats to enhance the privacy of the traveling dignitaries, who will be able to monitor the state of affairs through the analog thermometer, speedometer and clock mounted in the roof liner. They'll also enjoy privacy thanks to the electrically operated glass partition wall with an 18.5-inch monitor mounted in front of it and a choice of Burmester sound systems. Long the favorite of heads of state and captains of industry, the new Pullman will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show now just weeks away. We don't doubt that Mercedes will offer its customers a choice of engine options (as long as they're capable of motivating the new Pullman's assuredly substantial heft), but most suitable to the task will of course be the 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 with its 523 horsepower and 612 pound-feet of torque.
