Mercedes G500 4x4 rumbles into view

Tue, Feb 17 2015

Mercedes keeps raising the bar with the G-Class: just when you think the legendary Gelandewagen couldn't get any more hardcore, it mashes the throttle and does exactly that, plowing through a bank of snow, sand, hell or high water in the process. What you see here is the latest. It's called the G500 4x42. Aside from the various engine specs, the G-Class has been offered in a number of body-styles. Right around the same time that the two-door convertible was discontinued, Benz rolled out the indomitable G63 AMG 6x6 – a half-million-dollar, six-wheeled monster truck powered by Affalterbach's 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8. Evidently enough people liked the idea but didn't see the point in that extra set of wheels, so Mercedes has toned it down – just a little – but kept the high-riding suspension. The result is the truck we've seen testing a couple of times now in a bright shade of Hulk green, and which is now just about ready for its debut. On the scale of extreme G-Wagens, it slots in between the standard model and the 6x6, keeping the jacked-up suspension and giant wheels, but losing the extra axle. The G500 moniker also indicates that it'll at least be available with the 382-horsepower, naturally aspirated, non-AMG version of the 5.5-liter V8 that we'd know as the G550. Just how much of a premium Benz will charge for the beefed-up version, we don't know, as further details are set to be released next week ahead of a likely debut in Geneva. But hopefully it'll be closer to the $115k it gets for the standard version than the $500+k the 6x6 goes for.

Brabus Mercedes-AMG GT is a 600-hp exercise in restraint

Wed, Sep 16 2015

Big, wild, crazy vehicles from local tuners are one of the highlights of all European auto shows, where even high-performance cars get ludicrous amounts of horsepower and questionable body mods. Occasionally, though, one tuning shop comes out with something that is actually pretty reasonable in both departments. At the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, that vehicle comes from Brabus and its take on the Mercedes-AMG GT, simply called the Brabus GT. Sure, it has 600 horsepower, which is a lot, but it's only 97 hp more than stock. Asking a European tuner to increase a car's horsepower by just 97 ponies is like asking a six-pack-a-day smoker to quite cold turkey – it requires a tremendous amount of self-control. It's a similar story on the body, where we get a new body kit, new wheels, and a slightly tweaked interior. Now, to be fair, the body kit is made from carbon fiber and the wheels are staggered, multi-spoke alloys, but neither mod is too garish. The cabin gets new black leather, which comes from cows and not some other typical Euro tuner hide, like whale foreskin. The steering wheel gets an Alcantara wrap, and there's some carbon-fiber and wood trim added as well. It's all very, very simple, and not just for a European tuner – we could picture Mercedes itself coming up with a very similar treatment if/when it does an AMG GT Black Series. We've got a wide array of live photos of the new Brabus GT from its Frankfurt debut. Scroll up and check them out. Related Video:

2016 Mercedes-Benz G550 Quick Spin [w/video]

Wed, Sep 23 2015

If there ever was an automotive embodiment of the phrase, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," that'd be the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. The G-Wagen has carried on largely unchanged since the 1970s, with only small updates throughout the decades. Today, it's the halo vehicle for Mercedes' entire SUV range, and while it's more luxurious and efficient than ever, it'll still climb a mountain if asked. "Our legend has a bright future," says Dr. Gunnar Guthenke, Mercedes' G-Class boss. And for now, that means the addition of a new base engine for the 2016 model year, as well as other small updates. The powerplant in question is Merc's new twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter V8 – you know, the one from the AMG GT – tuned to produce 416 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque in the G550. Compared to the outgoing, naturally aspirated, 5.5-liter V8, the new engine is stronger by 34 hp and 59 lb-ft. And while official fuel economy numbers are still pending, Mercedes says the G550 is 17-percent more fuel efficient with this smaller, more powerful engine. Win-win. As for the rest of the G-Class, the 2016 model year changes are limited to a new front bumper with more pronounced air intakes (and the removal of the cow catcher bars), wider wheel arches, a few new colors (including some seriously bright hues), and a redesigned instrument cluster. Those are all well and good, but the star of the show is that 4.0-liter V8. It's a honey in the AMG GT, and it's a perfect fit under the hood of the G550. Driving Notes I'm kicking myself for not taking video of the exhaust note, because holy crap, the G550 sounds amazing. Mercedes' engineers should be applauded for the exhaust tuning on the updated G-Class. The result is a low, burbly, throaty V8 noise that comes bellowing out the SUV's side pipes. The extra 59 lb-ft of torque is really noticeable off the line. And like in the AMG GT and C63, the 4.0-liter V8 provides linear power delivery with no noticeable turbo lag. Mercedes says the 2016 G550 will do 0-60 in 5.7 seconds, compared to 6.0 seconds in the 2015 model. That's right, it's a 5,724-pound, box-shaped SUV that'll run nearly neck and neck with a base Porsche Boxster. In terms of on-road refinement, the G-Class is the same as it ever was. There's an optional, adjustable suspension for 2016, with Comfort and Sport modes, but the difference between the two settings is negligible.
