Mercedes previews autonomous Vision Tokyo concept

Mercedes is bringing a new concept car – or concept something at any rate – to the Tokyo Motor Show this year. The upscale German automaker is not telling us much about its latest show car at this point. However, it has released the solitary teaser image above to keep us on our toes for a little while longer. Billed as "a vision for future generations," the Mercedes-Benz Vision Tokyo concept appears to take the form of some sort of futuristic minivan - the kind you'd expect to see in some movie set years from now. Beyond that, we don't know much, but the Silver Star automaker describes the creation as "autonomous, luxurious and progressive" all at once. Expect it, then, to build on the F 015 Luxury in Motion concept presented at the beginning of the year at the Detroit Auto Show, and adopt an equally unusual silhouette, propelling itself (and its blissful occupants) in a self-driving cocoon of high-tech luxury. Don't be surprised to find some sort of alternative propulsion under the hood as well, be it a hybrid, full electric, or hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. The Tokyo show is typically populated mostly by Japanese automakers and their latest wares, and with so many of the country's own manufacturers lining up new debuts, this edition will be no exception. This year's expo, though, also appears to be attracting some foreign attention. In addition to this Mercedes concept, Mini will be showcasing its new convertible model for the first time at the show. The Mercedes G-Class gets the full Maybach treatment before the curtain finally closes

Like the hotdog and soda combo at Costco or the official website for the 1996 movie Space Jam, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class has soldiered on nearly unaltered since its birth. Sure, there have been variants like the wonderfully over-the-top G63 6x6, but the G-Wagen is essentially the same squared-off SUV with rifle-bolt locks and doors with enough mass to support a minor gravity field. Spy shots show a replacement is finally on the horizon, but based on the leaked YouTube video above and Instagram post below, it looks like the current model is going to get the full Mercedes-Maybach Landaulet treatment before the curtain finally closes. While there has been no official word from the automaker, all signs point to a genuine Mercedes-Maybach product. The vehicle is badged as a G650, which falls in line with other current V12-powered Mercedes-Maybach products. The Maybach name and badge are found in all the expected places. The license closely matches other Mercedes German-manufacturer plates. The carbon fiber fender flares and portal axles look like they were taken from the G550 4x42. The latter means, despite the increased wheelbase, this new model should still be a formidable off-road machine. This content is hosted by a third party. That means high-quality leather surfaces throughout and an increased focus on rear seat comfort and convenience. If this is indeed a G650, it's packing a 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V12 under the hood that churns out 630 horsepower and 737 pound-feet of torque. The partial convertible top is what gives this the Landaulet moniker. According to the text on this Instagram post, there will only be 99 examples produced. AMG could have a hybrid model on sale by 2020

European CO2 regulations are driving every carmaker to previously unthinkable solutions in order to reduce emissions. And so far those unthinkable solutions, like a turbocharged Ferrari, have been pretty good. AMG has its development eye on the year 2021, when EU regulations will include every car sold by Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler when calculating fleet average emissions, and says that the deadline could mean a hybrid AMG by 2020. Those are the words of the company's R&D boss, Thomas Weber, to Autocar. Weber says a hybrid system right now wouldn't work only because AMG customers "wouldn't buy it." In five years, though, not only will the pressure have forced the situation, but the low-six-figure segment might also be populated by heresies like a diesel and hybrid Bentleys, and a hybrid or electric Porsche 911, to break the ice. Acceptance is coming down from the top via supercars like the McLaren P1 and Porsche 918, and up from the bottom with the near-term incorporation of electric turbos and e-boost systems. And whenever the German challengers to Tesla arrive, that will be another huge step to changing the public's mind. E-boost is what Weber said the division is looking at right now, perhaps like the kind in Mercedes' Bluetec Hybrid that employs an innocuous battery and motor. Regenerative braking would keep the battery charged. Weber said he likes it because it's proven, it's light, it's cheap, and it's already used in high-volume applications. But we would not be surprised to see a more robust implementation by the time 2020 gets here.
