Toyota and Mercedes begin the Super Bowl ad teases with dads and hares

Tue, Jan 20 2015

Advertising Age says pregame buzz is where Super Bowl advertisers really build momentum for their Big Game commercials, so let the teasing continue. We've seen the 30-second spot for the Lexus NX, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota are next out of the tunnel with campaigns that focus on a fable and fathers, respectively. The Mercedes tease gets former NFL wide receiver Jerry Rice lining up a talking-heads debate with eight-year-old Andrew Hunter about whether Hunter's hare could beat a tortoise in a race, but it's a disaster before it even begins. In what will be a continuing storyline, a social media component lets people side with #TeamTortoise or #TeamHare, with "a Big Race viewing party" going to a lucky winner. Mercedes also promises there'll be a hero at the end, which we imagine will something in the Three-Pointed-Star family as opposed to the Testudinae or Leporidae families. Toyota's all about the biological family, rolling out a series of tweets and Vine videos showing off ex-NFL'ers and their kids to hype the "One Bold Choice Leads to Another" campaign for the Camry. The profiled paterfamiliae will be examples of those "who have contributed to their families' lives in bold ways." A 60-second spot during the pre-game will feature Paralympic athlete Amy Purdy, then those stand-up dads will get their own 60 seconds during the second quarter. The social media tag for this one is #OneBoldChoice. You can watch Mercedes' opening salvo above, and check out a Toyota tweet with ex-quarterback Kurt Warner below. Mercedes owners cause traffic jam during 40 minute standoff

Thu, Sep 24 2015

Two Mercedes-Benz drivers in the UK refused to give way in a one-lane tunnel causing a frustrating traffic jam for everyone else on the road. The tense standoff occurred on Forlease Road in Maidenhead, England. A woman in a convertible Mercedes entered a tunnel where she had the right of way to proceed, according to The Daily Mail. However an older man, also in a Mercedes, was almost through the tunnel and seemed unable to reverse. In the video, frustrated drivers are seen negotiating, pleading, and arguing with each of the drivers, trying to convince one of them to give up the ground. While traffic was piling up behind the woman's Mercedes, a man in a reflective vest yelled at her in frustration. "There are mums around here trying to get their kids from school," he pointed back at the cars standing still behind her. "Just back up, love! You're being ridiculous." Bystander Brad Haverly shot the video. He told The Mail that the woman wouldn't give up because she had the right of way, even though the elderly driver was too scared and confused to back up. His first attempt almost sent his car careening into the oncoming Mercedes. After 40 minutes the elderly man reversed with help from bystanders. Traffic began to flow through the tunnel shortly afterwards. Both motorists were gone by the time police arrived. Race Recap: Singapore Grand Prix is about a safety car and submission

Mon, 23 Sep 2013

The Singapore Formula One Grand Prix is the Monaco GP of the Orient - a weekend known more for its glamour and time-slot than on-track action, with a temporary circuit that punishes every mistake, usually terminally.
Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes-AMG Petronas got the best of Free Practice 1, opening the curtain on a possible resurgence of Silver Arrows performance. By the time qualifying was done, though, it was his teammate Nico Rosberg who lined up second on the grid, followed by Romain Grosjean with a beautiful performance in the Lotus, Mark Webber in the Infiniti Red Bull, and Hamilton all the way back in fifth. Behind them were Felipe Massa outqualifying Ferrari teammate Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button getting the McLaren into eighth, Daniel Ricciardo with another good Q3 effort to get into ninth, and the shocker of Esteban Gutiérrez getting his Sauber into the top ten for the first time this year.
At the front of the pack was Sebastian Vettel. Again. But he was only ahead of Rosberg by a single tenth of a second...
