Information on this fine automobile:

The Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL 6.9 is the high-performance version of the long-wheelbase version of the W116 chassis introduced in 1972 S-class luxury saloon. The model was generally referred to in the company's literature as the "6.9", to separate it from the regular 450SEL.

Produced between 1975 and 1981 in extremely limited numbers (1475 in 1976 world production), it was billed as the flagship of the Mercedes-Benz car line. The 6.9 also has the distinction of being among the first vehicles ever produced with optional electronically controlled anti-lock brakes (1978). The engine was a cast iron V8 with single overhead camshafts operating sodium-filled valves against hardened valve seats on each aluminium alloy cylinder head. Top speed was factory-rated at 140 mph, but some journalists testing the car saw speeds approaching 150 mph.  All of this speed, luxury & technology came at a very high price. At a time when the most expensive Cadillacs each listed for about $16,000 US, the 6.9 listed for around $40,000!

In a 1999 poll conducted by Britain's Classic & Sports Car magazine, the Mercedes-Benz 6.9 ranked fourth on their list of the "world's greatest saloons." Car and Driver magazine proclaimed to be "the greatest Mercedes-Benz ever built."

Korean man destroys Mercedes S63 to protest poor customer service

Tue, Sep 15 2015

Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face. This South Korean owner was apparently quite dissatisfied with the customer service from the dealer for his Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG. For some reason, the best solution that he came up with was parking the luxury sedan outside the store and beating the Mercedes mercilessly with a golf club. Whatever the problem was, this definitely didn't help. According to a translation of Almuraba, the owner in the clip was upset because the dealer refused to pickup and replace his car. We suspect there's likely more to the story than just that, but you're no going to get it from this video. Instead, watch as a man systematically puts dozens of divots into the S-Class and breaks every light he can find. The damage looks way too severe to just buff out, but once all the glass is replaced, at least the next owner wouldn't need to worry about dings (or large holes).

13-year-old boy swipes dad's Mercedes, drives across Europe

Wed, 16 Jan 2013

After an argument with his adoptive parents that resulted in them taking away his mobile phone, an angry 13-year-old boy ran away from his home in Italy and headed straight to Poland to meet his biological sister. But instead of taking the train or hitching a ride, like most on the run, the young man (an accomplished go-kart racer and car enthusiast) grabbed the keys to his father's Mercedes-Benz and jumped behind the wheel for an impromptu road trip.
With less than 200 euros (about $270) in his wallet and a passport in his pocket, the youngster managed to put more than 500 miles between himself and his distraught parents, crossing two international borders in the process, before German police nabbed him just shy of the Polish border. According to reports, the vehicle was tracked - it wasn't his driving that alerted authorities to his location.
Reunited with his mother and father, who traveled to Germany to retrieve both their son and the vehicle, the young man apologized and acknowledged his error. As a result of his actions, social workers will increase checks on the family and we can be sure his parents are now hiding the keys.

Mercedes may be working on a new electric car dubbed 'Ecoluxe'

Fri, Dec 26 2014

Automobile has a lengthy piece this month on how the four German mass-market luxury manufacturers each plan to go after Tesla with their own electric vehicles. It was written by Georg Kacher, the magazine's European bureau chief, and the English version came a month after he wrote the German-language original for Autobild. Tesla isn't exactly a threat to the Germans, but, according to the report, the Model S is planting the right kinds of seeds in niches that are important to the luxury players. The thinking is that - in addition to needed electric vehicles anyway for stricter US regulations - it's better to start designing the machinery now. The article posited Porsche's attack would rest on the coming Panamera platform, but a big hurdle would be battery placement. Unable to find one large space for a lithium-ion pack, engineers would instead put batteries everywhere they could, for a supposed tally of some "108 battery pouches" throughout the body. A few days after the Automobile piece, however, Porsche publicly said it had no intention of challenging the Model S, because the enthusiastic driving the brand is known for doesn't jive with useful range. In Kacher's retelling, Mercedes' plans are even more ambitious, supposedly taking aim at the Model S and the coming Model X. It would do this with an investment in excess of $2 billion in a program called "Ecoluxe" – Mercedes has no brand division akin to BMW's i and Audi's e-tron. The new brand would create a four-strong family of bespoke electric vehicles: a smaller platform with a wheelbase around 106 inches and a larger one with a wheelbase around 118 inches. In addition, the range would have "provisions for rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, and rear-wheel steering." The numbers are impressive: seating for seven in the larger vehicles, both longer than 16 feet, front and rear storage areas, ratings of up to 610 horsepower and production capacity of 80,000 units per year. When would we see such creatures? Perhaps as soon as 2019. We do know that if Tesla can knock the Model X over the outfield fence, automakers are going to have to do something. We don't know what the chances are that Ecoluxe is Mercedes' first move - but such a plan could help explain the weird Mercedes concept spied in October.
