I am the second owner of this low mileage, classic Mercedes.  The original owner took fantastic care of it and it’s still in great shape.  My goal was to convert this car to run on vegetable oil.  I had already done one conversion and wanted to do this one right.  Time and money ran short and I never finished.  The auction includes all the parts I purchased to complete the conversion, including the V. O. Tech heater/filter, and numerous other bits.

I made a lot of modifications to the car.  If you’re a Mercedes purist, you might feel ill reading the list:

  • I started installing WVO/SVO system from V. O. Tech.  Their website is out of action but you can find details here:  http://web.archive.org/web/20110203150751/http://www.votechusa.com/.  I relocated some of the electronics on the left side of the engine compartment to make room for the heater/filter.  The cruise control never worked after this.  At the time this was the best conversion, as it used both electric heat and hot water to get the vegetable oil up to temp very fast.  The diesel fuel runs through the unit and it’s plumbed Greasecar style.  I never hooked up the hot water or power.  I planned to have a custom tank made but never got that far.  I also removed the ashtray and made an instrument panel for the VO system which is not hooked up (the vacuum gauge was hooked up, but the pipe kinked, cracked and let air into the fuel system, so I disconnected it).
  • Removed hydraulic SLS (self leveling suspension).  This was a mess to maintain.  The pump failed and leaked hydraulic fluid everywhere.  I rebuilt the pump and it lasted another 8 or 9 months before failing again.  Then I gave up and replaced the whole thing with a kit from www.slsconversion.com.  It’s been fine since then.
  • I removed as much of the vacuum system that wasn’t necessary.  There were a lot of things added for the American versions of these cars for emissions control that didn’t help performance.  You can find lots of guides on the internet about this.  The vacuum system works great; the door locks work, even after sitting for more than a month.
  • I removed the bulky Mercedes air cleaner and replaced it with something much smaller.  I’ll include the original if you want to put it back.  I also put in a breather system to catch the crankcase blowby.
  • I removed the EGR valve – you can see the blockoff plate in the pictures.

The Good:

  • Engine runs great.  It has approximately 146,200 miles (may be more as we use it occasionally).  It burns no oil beyond what you’d expect from a diesel engine approaching 30 years of age.  I’ve gotten close to 30mpg on the highway!
  • The transmission is perfect… It’s never given me a problem
  • The steering is tight
  • The body is straight.  But let’s be honest:  This car is almost 30 years old.  The paint has been recently waxed and looks good.  When you get close there are pits, scratches, and door dings that you’d expect on a car of this age.  For a 27 year old car, it’s fine; if you’re looking for a museum addition, keep looking or get ready to paint!
  • Third row seat option – sure there’s no padding, but it has seatbelts, and the kids LOVE it!  Just be prepared for some disapproving looks from other parents!  My kids always wanted to ride in the back!
  • Roof Rack – Bulletproof chrome-plated factory roof rack option.
  • Manual Sunroof - No motor to wear out.  Doesn’t leak.
  • Not sure if this belongs in Good or Bad!  The car as a nice Sony CD player in it, which works well.  The antenna was not hooked up so the radio only picks up very strong/close stations.  I used my phone to listen to the radio for years!  I believe the previous owner put in new speakers, but I’m not sure.
  • Power windows all work

The Bad:

  • The latch for the glovebox is broken.  Previous attempts at using tape have left marks on the dash.
  • The dashboard has the typical cracks you’ll see on these cars.  The wood trim is present, but two pieces have fallen off and I didn’t reattach them.
  • The plastic on the interior around the doors is warping due to heat and age.  This is happening around the tailgate as well.
  • Driver’s seat has some cracks in the MB Tex
  • The AC is inoperative.  There are stickers indicating it was converted to R134a, but it does not cool.  The heater works fine.  I believe the monovalve is working fine.
  • The battery should be replaced soon.  If it sits for a long time, it needs to be jumped.
  • The glow plugs should be replaced.  The light doesn't come on, which is an indication that they’re not working.  It starts fine in warm weather, but complains in the cold!

==================

I invite you to look at this car and inspect it before bidding.  I’m located in Owings, Maryland 20736, close to Washington DC and can drive it to work in Lanham, Maryland 20706.  I will answer any questions and send pictures of anything you want to see.

I will not end the auction early; if I wanted to do that, you’d see a Buy-It-Now on this auction.  If you have a price in mind, then bid and hope you win.

A winning bid is a legal contract to purchase.  DON’T BID if you are not interested in owning this car.  Don’t bid if you don’t have the money to buy the car.  I will not sign the title over until the full payment for the vehicle has cleared my bank.

This vehicle is sold as-is, where-is.  You will be responsible for retrieving the vehicle once it is paid for.

I will require a non-refundable $500 deposit upon the closing of the auction. The rest of the payment must be made within 5 business days.

2015 Russian Grand Prix was full of crashes and DNFs

Mon, Oct 12 2015

Mercedes-AMG Petronas non-executive chairman Niki Lauda said of Lewis Hamilton's race-day domination this year, "The guy is driving like a god." Qualifying is another story, though – teammate Nico Rosberg taking pole proved that sometimes deities have to settle for second on the grid. Williams driver Valtteri Bottas surprised himself and his team with third place, half a second behind Hamilton but 0.05 sec ahead of the first Ferrari driven by Sebastian Vettel, while a mistake on Kimi Raikkonen's final flying lap left him in fifth, 0.4 sec behind Vettel. The Sahara Force India team had a good showing, with Nico Hulkenberg qualifying sixth just ahead of teammate Sergio Perez in seventh. It's the first time they've had both drivers in the top ten on the grid since the 2014 British Grand Prix. Romain Grosjean is leaving the stormy waters of Lotus at the end of the year for the unknown waters of Haas F1, but he made the shoestring operation look really good before Renault takes over by taking eighth place on the grid. Max Verstappen qualified well again with ninth in the Toro Rosso, ahead of the first Infiniti Red Bull Racing of Daniel Ricciardo in tenth. Red Bull driver Daniil Kvyat lined up eleventh for his home grand prix, certainly a disappointment after locking up fifth place on the grid last year in a Toro Rosso. When Pirelli brought soft and supersoft compounds to Sochi, the company said it hoped this year's race would be better than last year's. We're sure this first-lap mishap isn't what they meant. Rosberg and Hamilton dragged it down to Turn 1, with Rosberg getting the inside line. Hamilton had to go wide at Turn 2 as Rosberg fought to hold position, but they left a mess in their wake: Hulkenberg spun going into Turn 2 and stopped in the middle of the track, and Marcus Ericsson in the Sauber – who'd started 16th – collided with him. Both cars were out of the race immediately, and the Safety Car came in. The Safety Car returned to the pits on Lap 3 Rosberg led the field, but just two laps later the German complained of a sticking throttle pedal. Two laps later he had to retire, unable to drive the car properly. That put Hamilton at the front, and we've seen that race a bunch of times before. He built a double-digit lead and never lost it.

Mercedes previews sleek concept for CES

Wed, Dec 31 2014

It was over two months ago that we spotted a mysterious cloaked prototype said to belong to Mercedes, but we didn't know much about it at the time. And we still don't, but at least the German automaker has given us an idea of what to look forward to. Released on Facebook is this teaser image showing a silhouette of what appears to be that same concept car. The image is accompanied only by these few words: "The future will be bolder than you've ever imagined" and tagged by an accompanying #mbCES - which tells us only that, a) it's futuristic, which we already knew, and b) that it's coming to the CES, set to be held around a week from now in Las Vegas. The sleek one-box design appears to have some sort of appendage atop its roof – just the kind of periscope that might house, say, some cameras – leading to speculation that the idea behind this concept would be to showcase autonomous driving technology. We'd also be surprised if it weren't electric powered and – given the backdrop for its reveal – all the technology Daimler can throw at it. But one way or another, we'll be finding out soon, so watch this space. News Source: Mercedes-Benz via Facebook CES Mercedes-Benz Technology Concept Cars

Mercedes C350e PHEV will start at 51,000 euros

Tue, Feb 3 2015

Mercedes-Benz will start selling its C350 Plug-In Hybrid in Europe next month, for a somewhat reasonable price. The Daimler division has announced the sedan will cost about 51,000 euros ($58,000 US). Which isn't insanely expensive by Benz standards. Mercedes first showed off the model stateside at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit last month, and the specs were pretty impressive. The car delivers a combined 275 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque from its gas-powered engine and electric motor. The C350 PHEV also offers a 112 miles per gallon equivalent fuel efficiency rating (using the more lenient European driving cycle) alongside a 0-60 mile per hour acceleration time of less than six seconds. And the car can go as far as 20 miles on electricity while reaching a top speed of 130 miles per hour. Both lead-footers and tree-huggers can rejoice at that. Americans won't be that far behind their European brethren, as the model will go on sale as a 2016 model-year version in the US this fall. In the meantime, for some more information on a sedan that we think qualifies as a bit of guilt-free fun, take a look at Mercedes's press release below. Sales release for the C 350 e: Future inside Stuttgart, Feb 02, 2015 Stuttgart – As a plug-in hybrid, the new Mercedes-Benz C 350 e combines an extraordinary level of efficiency, dynamism and comfort. In both its Saloon and its Estate guise, the performance of a sports car makes it a convincing proposition, especially combined with certified consumption figures of just 2.1 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres and a range of up to 31 kilometres in all-electric mode. Both the Saloon and the Estate model are equipped with air suspension and a pre-entry climate control system as standard, delivering a unique level of driving and climate comfort. The C 350 e is available to order now from 50,961.75 euros for the Saloon and 52,627.75 euros for the Estate (prices include VAT). Both vehicles will be at dealerships from March 2015. As a plug-in hybrid, the C 350 e combines a combustion engine with an electric drive system and a high-voltage lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 6.38 kWh, which can be charged from an external power source. Thanks to an intelligent on-board charging system, this takes approximately one hour and 30 minutes at a wallbox. A charging time of around two hours is achievable via a socket.
