Beautiful, low mileage 1980 Mercedes-Benz 300TD wagon. This is the newest-driving Mercedes of this era that I've seen and I've seen many. It is a three owner car with the first one owning it for ~30 years. I've gone through the car mechanically pretty exhaustively, bring all maintenance up to date including fluids, etc. The brakes and tires, (4 matching Michelins), are fairly recent. The climate control servo unit was changed by me to a newer factory unit, (not the cheap aluminum replacement one), and it functions properly including cold A/C recharged with R-12 freon. The Becker Mexico cassette stereo is original and sounds great. All electric and vacuum accessories work as they should including door locks that work quickly and hold vacuum for days.

This car is not flawless, it has had paintwork in places that is less than perfect. It has zero evidence of ever being in a "real accident", i.e. it has its original radiator support with factory stickers in correct places and perfect under carriage, but it must have had scrapes repaired. This does not detract from the amazing curb appeal of the car, in my opinion, but it keeps it from being a concours car. I would rather under-represent this car and have someone be delighted with it than the alternative, even if it suppresses bids. I feel strongly that most sellers here do the opposite. Also, I do not have the original books and records for the car. The first owner took great care of it, (it had to be garaged constantly for the condition it's in), but he somehow chucked the books a long time ago by accident. That's the story I got, anyways. I put a replacement owners manual in it bought on eBay. Also, (and I do not consider this a negative), the real self-leveling suspension has been disabled and regular sedan-type springs and shocks installed. The car rides beautifully and sits at the proper height.

On the positive ledger, it drives like it's about 5 years old. Most sellers would say, "like new", but that would be stretching it. I've owned a lot of this vintage MB cars and this one freaks me out, it's like it's suddenly about 1985. The interior is absolutely gorgeous and not worn, it even smells nice. All switches and buttons look and feel new or very young and the driving experience is amazing. Extremely tight. The engine hums, the transmission shifts like the day it left the factory and the steering and suspension is the best I've ever seen or felt. The interior looks like it has about 50k miles on it for the most part. The dash has tiny cracks near defroster vents that are not visible from inside car, but it looks like new otherwise. The OM617 non-turbo 5-cylinder is not known for its blistering acceleration but the car moves out smartly and cruises like a dream at 75-80 mph, or any other speed. It's like a stick of butter on wheels.

This car has never been run on WVO or vegetable oil but could be if desired, in fact it is probably the best model for it.

In person inspections are strongly encouraged including mechanical inspections. I almost forgot...this is a truly rust-free car. It is as dry as the Mohave desert. I will be happy to photograph any specific areas of the car for out-of-town buyers. I would not hesitate to jump in this car and drive it cross-country, it has no current mechanical or maintenance needs. Thanks for looking!

Best 3rd row SUVs of 2022

Wed, Oct 19 2022

If you plan on using a vehicle's third row a lot, let us at least make the suggestion that a minivan would be a smarter bet than anything you're going to see on this list of best three-row SUVs. Their third rows are bigger, more comfortable and easier to get to. The kids will definitely be happier. Here are our two top choices.  OK, now that that's out of the way, we totally get why minivans are totally depressing and that if the kids want to be happier, they can buy their own darn vehicle. You're buying, you're driving, you're being seen in it and you'd rather have a three-row SUV. Fair enough. Luckily, there are more choices than ever and they're really good. The best do a particularly good job of being family friendly without looking like a drab transportation appliance, although really, you can't go wrong with any of the mainstream three-row SUVs. Now, some of the luxury choices are a bit suspect, including those that are otherwise very appealing but have cramped third-row seats (the Genesis GV80 comes to mind). We're focusing on three-row SUVs here, so having a usable third row is a must.   In this list, we have broken things down into four sub-categories: Best Three-Row Crossover |  Best Full-size Three-Row SUV Best Luxury Three-Row SUV |  Best Flagship Luxury Three-Row SUV Note that we define crossovers as SUVs since most buyers use the terms interchangeably, but acknowledge that "crossover" is literally a vehicle with a car-like unibody structure as opposed to the truck-like, body-on-frame construction that traditionally has defined "SUV." In other words, we consider all crossovers SUVs, but not all SUVs are crossovers (specifically those in the full-size segment and some in the flagship luxury segment). Best Three-Row Crossover SUVs of 2024 2024 Honda Pilot Why it stands out: Exceptional storage and cargo space; unique second-row functionality; refined ride; versatile and capable TrailSport; advanced AWDCould be better: Subpar acceleration with lackadaisical transmission and engine response; so-so driver assistance tech Read our full 2024 Honda Pilot Review The Honda Pilot was completely redesigned for 2023. It maintains its predecessor's family friendly packaging and overall focus, but it has injected a welcome sense of style (especially in the TrailSport pictured above) that makes it stand out much better from the big crossover crowd.

Daimler and Volvo could jointly develop internal combustion engines

Sun, Jan 5 2020

BERLIN — Luxury German carmaker Daimler and Volvo, owned by China's Geely, are considering cooperating to cut the costs of developing combustion engines, a magazine reported on Sunday, citing unnamed company sources. The Automobilwoche weekly cited a Volvo manager as saying there were initial talks with Daimler, but no concrete plans, while a company spokesman said it was too early to talk about firm projects, although it was not excluding anybody. A Daimler spokesman said the company's cooperation with Geely, which owns a 10% stake in the German carmaker, was developing in a positive way, but declined to comment further. Global tariffs, accelerated by a trade war between China and the United States, as well as higher investment requirements for electric and autonomous vehicles, are forcing carmakers to seek new ways to cut and share costs. In October, Volvo said it would merge its engine development and manufacturing assets with those of Geely, creating a division to supply in-house brands and also potentially others with next-generation combustion and hybrid engines. Automobilwoche said this new division would start operating by the end of March, which could be a possible starting point for cooperation with Daimler, while a further step could be a partnership to develop electric power trains. Geely and Daimler have said they plan to build the next generation of Smart electric cars in China through a joint venture and the two companies are also cooperating on a premium ride-hailing service in China. Geely bought Volvo Cars in 2010 from Ford, allowing the Swedish brand to operate on an arms-length basis. But in recent years, it has deepened cooperation between the two brands. Volvo already supplies engines to some Geely-branded vehicles, sharing technology through Geely's Lynk brand. Both companies share and develop common vehicle platforms. McLaren, Red Bull and Ferrari call for unfreezing F1 engines

Mon, Dec 29 2014

Formula One is a hugely expensive sport. Not only do you have enormous salaries and logistical expenses, as you would in any other sport, but each team also spends huge sums developing their own chassis from the ground up – and so too do the participating automakers in developing the engines. One of the ways the series organizers mitigate those costs is by freezing development. So once the new crop of V6 turbo hybrid powertrains were developed, that was it. But now three of the of the sport's leading teams are calling on the FIA to unfreeze engine development. Their reason? Unfair advantage. There's little question that Mercedes did the best job of developing its "power unit" to meet the new regulations that took effect at the beginning of this past season. That's how the Mercedes team won all but three of the grands prix this season and finished with at least one car on the podium at every single race. It's also a big part of how the teams that bought their engines from Mercedes this season managed to consistently outperform the other non-works-supported teams. That clear advantage is why Red Bull, Ferrari and now McLaren are calling for engine development to be unfrozen. Their argument is that, under the current locked-down status quo, their engine suppliers (Renault, Ferrari and Honda, respectively) cannot possibly catch up. So unless the FIA and Formula One Management want the next few seasons to be the kind of absolute blow-outs that this past season was, these leading teams argue, the powers that be are going to have to make some changes. For its part, Mercedes naturally counters that unfreezing engine development would send costs spiraling out of control. But then of course it stands to lose the most by re-opening engine development. If those three teams, however, closely intertwined as they are with the three other engine suppliers participating in next year's championship, manage to solicit enough support from the other customer teams and bring the matter to a vote, Mercedes may very well find itself out-numbered.
