This beautiful Mercedes was the third year of the new “W123” platform/chassis. There were some differences that had not been seen in the past, but the company wanted to model its new cars based off their S-class styling. One of the key features about this Coupe is that in fact it is diesel powered. There was not a turbo introduced until 1981, but the power is more than enough to get you where you need to go.

The exterior is classic Mercedes at its best. The new, larger front bumper corrals the headlights in one sleek style as you take in all the bodylines of the car.

One of the new exterior features is the chrome molding that completely wraps around the front and rear windows on each side as one solid piece.  More chrome trim runs along the entire side of the body as it swoops into the big rear bumper.

All the original “300CD” and “Diesel” emblems are still in tact letting other know you have something truly special.  The chrome hubcap wheels really catch your attention with the addition of a large Mercedes Benz logo in the middle.

The interior is truly where Mercedes loves to flex its muscles. Other manufactures like Cadillac pride themselves as being the first name in luxury. Mercedes was never one to be out performed.

The style and beauty inside the cockpit of this 300 would have blow you away in 1979. Even in todays times, its really a sight to see how all the interior components are still in the luxurious condition they are in.

Leather bucket seats with a bench in the rear could easily hold 4-5 people at one time. Fully integrated gauges located in the dash are very easy to read and still in perfect working condition.

Wood grain trim covers the dashboard and its components to add to the stylish beauty you knew you would get from a Mercedes.
The factory 3-speed automatic transmission made driving this 300CD a walk in the park.

Diesel engines were not as popular back then as they are today. Now they are seen as superior in fuel efficiency once you put “hybrids” aside. The 300CD was a small step up from the base 230 models, but all those differences is what really attracted the buyers.

This car is believed to be completely original and has never been modified in any way besides performing routine maintenance. The iconic power plant behind this engineering marvel is a 3.0l inline-5 cylinder diesel engine, which produced around 80HP.

That might seem low, but that is not what diesels are known for. The torque is the catcher, at 115ft. lbs., this diesel like all other diesel engines has the torque higher than the horsepower.
This will allow for easily moving from a dead stop and keeps just enough power to maintain speed.

The undercarriage appears solid. You will see more shots of it in the slide show.

Mercedes C-Class Coupe to debut in Frankfurt

Wed, Mar 11 2015

Mercedes-Benz is set to launch its new C-Class Coupe at the Frankfurt Motor Show this fall, according to Autocar. In addition to the standard C Coupe, the German automaker will also reportedly show a Mercedes-AMG C63 version, which AMG boss Tobias Moers says will be a "breakthrough" for the brand. Speaking to Autocar, Mercedes design chief Gorden Wagener promises the new C-Class Coupe will be "even better to drive than it looks," and says that the two-door will be sleeker and even more beautiful than the recently launched S-Class Coupe. Talk about a tall order. Specific design tweaks for the C Coupe will include revised front- and rear-end styling, while keeping the C's long hood and short rear deck to emphasize its rear-wheel-drive architecture. What's more, this revised design will need to be flexible, as Mercedes is planning a convertible version of its C-Class. Expect the interior design to carry over largely unchanged. The same goes for powertrains, including the excellent, twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter V8 that will slot into the range-topping Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe. We'll know more when the sleeker, two-door C-Class is unveiled in September.

Foreign automakers pay from $38 to $65 per hour to non-union workers

Sun, Mar 29 2015

As leaders for the United Auto Workers gather in Detroit for their Special Convention on Collective Bargaining to work out the negotiating stance for this year's new labor agreements with the Detroit 3 automakers, what they most want to do is figure out how to eliminate the two-tier wage scale. However, the lower Tier 2 wage has allowed the domestic automakers to reduce their labor costs, hire more workers, and compete better with their import competition. As it stands, per-hour labor rates including benefits are $58 at General Motors, $57 at Ford, and $48 at Fiat-Chrysler – a reflection of FCA's much greater number of Tier 2 workers. The Center for Automotive Research released a study of labor rates (including benefits) that put numbers to what the imports pay: Mercedes-Benz pays the most, at an average of $65 per hour, Volkswagen pays the least, at $38 per hour, and BMW is just a hair above that at $39 per hour. Among the Detroit competitors, Honda workers earn an average of $49 per hour, at Toyota it's $48 per hour, Nissan is $42 per hour, and Hyundai-Kia pays $41 per hour. The lower import wages are aided by their greater use of temporary workers compared to the domestics. Automotive News says the ten-dollar gap between those foreign camakers and the domestics turns out to about an extra $250 per car in labor, which adds up quickly when you're pumping out many millions of cars. That $250-per-car number is one that, come negotiating time, the Detroit 3 will want to reduce, as the UAW is trying to raise both Tier 1 and Tier 2 wages. Another wrinkle is that the domestic carmakers are considering the wide adoption of a third wage level lower than Tier 2. Some workers who do minor tasks like assembling parts trays kits and battery packs already make less than Tier 2, but the UAW will be quite wary about cementing yet another wage scale at the bottom of the system while it's trying to fight a bigger battle at the top. Weekly Recap: An '80s encore in the auto world

Sat, Jul 11 2015

The '80s returned in a big way this week, as National Lampoon's, Ghostbusters, Miami Vice, and even Tetris were back in the news. While there were far more serious topics (see below), nostalgia mingled with modern marketing to put these Reagan-era favorites back in the spotlight. The '80s were alternately cold and corny at times, but their cultural touchstones can still generate big money. That's why Infiniti recreated an iconic scene from National Lampoon's Vacation (1983) for an advertisement that hawks the QX60 crossover. Actor Ethan Embry, who played Rusty Griswold in a later Lampoon's movie, pilots the Infiniti – which is serving as a modern Family Truckster – for a trip to Walley World. A blonde pulls alongside in a red Lamborghini. They flirt, and she drives on. Christie Brinkley, who played the original girl in the red sports car (she drove a Ferrari in the '83 flick), is riding shotgun and chides Embry with: "A blonde. In a convertible. Seriously?" Okay, it's hardly on the level of "here's looking at you," or even "you can't handle the truth," but it should resonate with '80s babies, many of whom are now having children of their own and moving into three-row SUVs like the QX60. Naturally, Hollywood is going back to the well, too, with a Vacation remake that premiers July 29. Meanwhile, Ghostbusters is returning next year, and director Paul Feig offered a peak at the new Eco-1 in this tweet. In the 1984 classic, the team drove a modified 1959 Cadillac. Now, it will drive a late '80s Cadillac. As expected, the announcement generated support and controversy from movie and car enthusiasts. His tweet had generated several thousand retweets and favorites in the days following the news. Though the '80s Caddy looks, uh, less elegant in comparison to the now-iconic fins and curves of the original Ecto-1, it's about the same time lapse into the past as the '59 Caddy was to viewers in 1984. Speaking of 1984, Miami Vice, which debuted that year on NBC, is seeing one of its hero cars hit the auction block, Mecum Auctions announced this week. The 1986 Ferrari used on the show will be offered for sale Aug. 15 during Monterey classic car week. The white supercar runs a 390-hp flat 12-cylinder engine paired with a five-speed manual transmission and was in storage after the show ended in 1989 until earlier this year. It has 16,124 miles on the odometer and is authenticated by Ferrari North America and Classiche.
