This is a no-reserve Auction.

Over the years I have bought and sold several cars on eBay.  This is the only car that I have purchased where the seller very deliberately misrepresented the car.  As a result, I paid much more than it was worth, and I am sure it will sell for far less.  I have listed this without reserve for a few reasons: 1) Whatever the final price is, will be what the market determines, so the new owner will get a fair price 2) I just want the car gone, it's a bad memory for me.

That said, it's not a terrible car.  It has its good points and its bad, I will do my best to point out both.  Please read all my text.

If you are not familiar with these cars, the 300SEL 4.5 is a very low production car relative to the rest of the MBZ sedan line of the time.  I believe only 2,533 of these we're built vs.27,641 other W109 cars and 322,825 of the very similar-looking W108 cars.  In 1973, this was the top line MBZ sedan of the W109 series with the air suspension.  These succeeded the mighty 300SEL 6.3 cars (of which over 6,500 were built), with a less powerful, but far less complicated engine.

The car is titled as a 1973, the build date is 7/72, I am not sure if it was an early '73 model-year car, if it was simply sold in 1973 and titled then, or if something was fumbled along the way, the VIN and title do match otherwise.

Good:
The car overall seems to be solid and without major rust or rust repairs
The car runs well (see also the bad)
The suspension is perfect - the car stays up for months (meaning 3+ months at a time in any weather)
Good and matching tires all around
Recent paint (see also the bad)
The seats and most of the interior are in better than average shape
The a/c actually blows cold!
The radio and antenna work
It does not leak oil of any sort
Steering tight and straight, no pulls or vibrations
Brakes work well, stops straight
Chrome is in overall good condition
Floors are solid

The bad:
The respray was a quickie, the car was masked and not exceptionally well masked, there is overspray on the undersides of the car and on some of the suspension. The paint that is on the body looks very good, and it was well prepped other than it should have had all the trim removed, etc.
The sunroof is inoperable as you can see.
Some of the interior wood has been refinished to a low standard
Some of the interior trim is not attached
There are several interior trim parts that need to be properly attached, but are not unattached
Some of the exterior trim parts need to be properly attached as well, they are there, but loose
The car does smoke a bit on start up, but oil pressure good and smoking does seem to stop
There is some rust in the wells of the trunk, but not rust through
The under-hood pad is in poor condition
Seats are not perfect, but no tears and not dyed or dry

I have not driven this car extensively.  I bought it, was disgusted, and put in storage with only an occasional drive.  The car was driven and washed for the photos for this ad and for me to determine that the car is basically sound, but that is about the extent of it.  I cannot tell you that you could get in it and drive it anywhere without a problem, since I have not done that myself.  On my other W109 cars, I can tell you that with confidence because I've done it.

By the way, if you're wondering, I did consider legal action against the seller, but frankly, it's just good money after bad and not worth the effort.

IMPORTANT: I want you to be happy with the car, meaning that you get what you expect to get for the price you're willing to pay.  To that end, I am more than happy to tell you what I know and to get you any photo you'd like to see, you are more than welcome to inspect it yourself

The rest:

The deposit is non-refundable, no exceptions.  I expect the payment terms to be adhered to, if they aren't and I don't hear from you, I will re-list the car.  You will need to talk with me on the phone to arrange for final payment, shipping, etc.

I am happy to store the car for up to 30 days in a secure, enclosed building at no charge.  I will be more than happy to assist the shipper you hire, or if you're feeling like an adventure, to pick you up at the airport!

Thank you for looking

2015 Mercedes-Benz CLS400 [w/video]

Mon, Apr 27 2015

Rocky IV debuted in 1985 but it was a few years later that I first watched it, on video. I loved every second of that terrible movie. I loved Drago's super-high-tech demonstration of punching power. I loved Rocky training in a Russian barn, with ropes, and yokes, and wagons. But mostly I loved Brigitte Nielsen. My 10-year-old brain sweated her impossible combination of curves and sharp edges, demure eyes, and sculpted bone structure. The perfect woman, but evolved by the power of the dark-hearted Soviet Union (or Denmark, whatever, I was ten). Red Sonja has a lot in common with the latest version of the Mercedes-Benz CLS, as I see it. Mercedes created a new market niche with its first four-door coupe, a sedan so well-proportioned, flowing, and femininely curved that it could pull off its inaccurate moniker. The third evolution of the CLS you see here has Nielsened up the shape into something altogether more angular and edgy, but like 1985's Brigitte, retains an undeniable sex appeal. It's a more opinionated piece of auto design than was the original CLS. And also a car that bifurcates the space between luxury coupe and luxury sedan. Ludmilla Drago would undoubtedly understand. Driving Notes For the base engine of a 4,200-pound car, the CLS400's two-turbo V6 does better than just get out of its own way. The full 354 pound-feet of torque is available way down at 1,600 revs, and plateaus until 4,000, giving you a fat band in which to call up power. Acceleration is available in the form of a quiet, gracious, but not aggressive push at just about every speed. From inside the cabin, the engine and exhaust noises are pleasantly rumbling, though muted. But do yourself a favor and try not to listen to the CLS tick over while standing around the driveway. When the car first pulled up in mine, warm from some 40 miles of highway, it still sounded an awful lot like a 2.0T on a mid-March morning. Not to belabor the Brigitte metaphor, but I found as much Neilsenian dichotomy in the ride and handling as I did the exterior styling. Especially with Mercedes' 4Matic system spreading out the grip, I found the CLS to be sharp when pushed, and rather excellent in terms of making quick corrections while under a cornering load. And yet, you've got to push through an initially soft suspension response to reach that hard edge. The CLS will initially resist being tossed around a winding backroad, but press on and she'll do as you ask.

Meet the Greenest and Meanest vehicles of 2016

Wed, Jan 27 2016

If you've been keeping track, you won't be surprised with the number one entry in this year's list of greenest cars from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE). In fact, the top three spots on the 2016 list are all the same as they were in 2015. After that, things get interesting. For one thing, this is the first Greenest list that doesn't have any purely internal combustion engine powertrain on it. Hybrids, yes, but if you want to be one of the top 12 greenest cars this year, you'd better have some sort of electric angle. ACEEE says that the conventional, gas-powered Smart Fortwo and Chevrolet Spark just missed the cut. In a statement, ACEEE lead vehicle analyst Shruti Vaidyanathan said, "The 2016 scores are in, and plug-in electric vehicles are outpacing all other vehicle offerings in terms of environmental friendliness." Like last year, one of the noticeable vehicles missing from the green list is the Tesla Model S. One reason? ACEEE takes curb weight into account (lighter is better), and the Model S is a heavy beast. The ACEEE doesn't just look at the clean side of the ledger. It also puts out a "meanest" list. These are the vehicles that pollute the most, not only from their tailpipes, but also any pollution created during the entire manufacturing process, from mining the raw materials to the energy used to produce the vehicle at the factory. The entire list, from greenest to meanest, is done using a "cradle to grave" analysis. You can see how the ACEEE determines its rankings here, explore the entire greenest cars site here, or click through our galleries to see which vehicles are extra green (above) or extra mean (below) this year. 12: Mercedes-Benz GL550 4MATIC View 12 Photos More Electric Cars than Ever on Greenest Vehicles List Electric Vehicles Nab 9 out of Top 12 Spots in ACEEE's Environmental Vehicle Rankings Washington, DC: Despite a tumultuous year for the automotive industry, manufacturers have continued to offer exciting technology options for a growing vehicle market. Today at greenercars.org, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) released its 19th annual comprehensive environmental ratings for vehicles. The following vehicles comprise the Greenest List for 2016: Greenest Score 1. Mercedes-Benz Smart ForTwo Electric Drive Convertible / Coupe 63 2. Chevrolet Spark EV 63 3. Fiat 500E 62 4. Buy a V8 Mercedes-Maybach, or splurge for a V12? Oh to have such problems

Thu, Jun 1 2017

There's a certain air that surrounds the Maybach badge, and it's not just the scent being pumped out by the ionizer in the car's glovebox. It's the cream of the crop when it comes to German luxury. These cars are filled with an acre's worth of wood and a herd's worth of cows, ensuring your fingers rarely touch materials as pedestrian as plastic. It's as quiet, as smooth, and as imposing as you think it would be. Though the latest model from Mercedes-Maybach, the S550, might have swapped in a V8 and all-wheel drive in place of the V12 at the heart of the S600, no other amenities have been lost in translation. The car's size gives it a certain presence. Staring at the profile shows a wheelbase that spans two counties, necessitating a microphone and speaker setup simply so that the driver can converse with the passenger – and a Maybach will almost always have a passenger. No one buys a Maybach to drive. You buy a Maybach to be driven. No means of transport short of business-class airline seating offers this much space. Sit back, recline the seat, roll up the shades and enjoy your $167,125 cocoon. But you know all of that already. What you really want to know is if $25,000 - the V12-powered S600 starts at $192,225 - is worth it to gain an extra four cylinders, 74 horsepower, and 96 lb-ft of torque. On paper, no, it's not. The two cars have identical performance numbers, and the S550 benefits from Mercedes' 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. Even with all-wheel drive, the S550 weighs less than the nose-heavy S600. Fuel economy is, as expected, superior in the S550. It's rated at 16 city, 24 highway and 19 combined as opposed to 13 city, 21 highway, and 16 combined. Visually, the two cars are identical save for a few badges. The V12 badge on the S600 is replaced with a 4Matic badge on the S550, and that's where things start to get murky. When you're spending six figures on a car, decisions become more emotional than practical. $25,000 is a lot of money, but there's a bigger difference between $25,000 and $50,000 than there is between $167,000 and $192,000. As stated, you don't buy these cars to drive. Performance needs to be merely adequate. A smooth, torquey V12 is likely preferable to a hairy-chested V8, refined as it may be. These cars will never touch redline, lest the passengers spill their champagne. Plus, that V12 badge is worth its weight in country club memberships. Driving an S550 is fine until an owner shows up at an event behind an S600.
